Birthday Trip: Instant Noodle Hunting In Canada

Approaching the Canadian border!

A weirdly shaped building; probably full of video cameras pointed at people crossing the border.

A rainy day.

Getting closer!

So they asked us a few questions – who are you, what are you doing, where are you going, for how long etc etc. Then they let us loose in Canada!

I really like tunnels – this one was especially cool as the center lane has little lights.

My sister Sue has come up to Canada before and gotten me noodles in the past. She told me about this place in Richmond… First stop: Price Smart Foods!

This place was amazing – so many varieties I’ve not seen in the USA before – really awesome!

Usually you see picture like this of people holding large fish. Five – count ’em FIVE bags full of instant noodles! Wow!!!

Then we drove through Richmond to Yaohan Centre – a big Asian shopping mall.

3700 No. 3 Road
Richmond B.C. V6X 3X2

This place looks rad!

So I was planning on going to a couple more stores: T&T and Osaka. Well, They’re one and the same so that was easy enough. They have a huge cooked food section in Osaka Supermarket – check out all the kinds of dim sum! I like the Shepherd’s Purse bun ingredients (click image to enlarge).

We both agreed that these actually smelled quite good.

Wow! Frozen turtle!

After all the noodle shopping, we decided to check out the food court. There were a few places – a curry place which smelled awesome, lots of Chinese and then there was Seoul Express. Sweet!

My cute wife Kitten made it such an awesome day!

She got a BBQ beef combo.

I decided to get…

Bibimbap!!! Been wanting to try this for so long and it’s so good. Comes in a stoneware crucible of fire! The food was sizzling for literally five minutes after it was at the table!

French language on everything – proof of being in Canada!

Okay, I’ve discovered something amazing here. The rice at the bottom of the bibimbap is stuck to the bottom. I found that with the spoon from my miso, you could pry it off in nice little pieces. This is like the bacon of the rice world – this is great! Kit told me that her grandmother would cook rice and do the same thing.

With pugs at home demanding attention (they’re telepathic), back to the USA we went.

I ended up with 55 new packs of instant noodles to review – in addition to the 26 that were already in the hamper, that’s 81! Pretty sure I’ll be good on noodles for a while!

New Year’s Package From Nissin Foods USA

Got an email telling me a package had arrived last week. It was from Scott A. over at Nissin Foods USA! Wonder what is inside…

A big box…

I sent a list over to Scott a while back with all of the Nissin products I’d reviewed and asked if there were any domestic varieties I hadn’t hit. He sent all the ones I hadn’t found!

Magnets!

Lots of cool posters!

A little box…

This is really cool – a little leather planner!

Already using this for notes on The Ramen Rater!

What’s this you ask? This is something I’ve wanted to check out for a long time. Nissin Raoh is a premium instant from Japan that I’ve not seen here. I’ll be reviewing it on Saturday, January 19th – which is Momofuku Ando Day! I’ll do a special video review – stay tuned! Also, if you want to take some pictures of the noodles you make, you can email them to me – [email protected] – and they’ll be included in the special Momofuku Ando Day Show Your Noodles! Thanks to Scott A. and everyone over at Nissin Foods USA for the nice package – thank you very much.

Re-Review: Nissin Spoon it Rich & Hearty Beef Stew Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Here’s another one from the already reviewed box. Thought it’d be a good one for today as it’s quite cold outside. You can check out the original review here.

Finished (click to enlarge). I added a can of mixed veggies, some Krazy Mixed Up Salt, Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake and a little Texas Pete hot sauce. The noodles are good – like egg noodles but from wheat flour. I found that the beef flavor was good, but missing something this time around. Pretty good – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 070662071021 .

Here’s one of my favorite Japanese tunes – ‘Flower of Carnage’ by Meiko Kaji. Here’s the translation:

Begrieving snow falls in the dead morning
Stray dog’s howls and the footsteops of Geta pierce the air
I walk with the weight of the Milky Way on my shoulders
But an umbrella that holds onto the darkness is all there is.
I’m a woman who walks at the brink of life and death
Who’s emptied my tears many moons ago.
All the compassion tears and dreams
The snowy nights and tomorrow hold no meaning
I’ve immersed my body in the river of venegance
And thrown away my womanhood many moons ago
On the behalf of heaven, they’re our soldiers, the loyal, invincible and brave.
Now it’s time for them to leave the country of their
Parents their hearts buoyed by encouraging voices.
They are solemnly resolved not to return alive, without victory.
Here at home, the citizens wait for you.
In foreign lands, the brave troops
Instead of kindness from someone
I do not care about
I rather prefer selifshness from you my beloved.
Oh, it the world a dream or an illusion?
I am all alone in jail.

Re-Review: Indomie Curly Noodle With Chicken & Chilli Paddi

This is one that ended up at second place on the Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time – that means its really hot! There are these tiny little peppers (chilli paddi) that are real scorchers and they’re small enough that when you happen to find one, you get quite a jolt! I reviewed this a while back this year – #732 and during the Meet The Manufacturer: Indomie special. This is one of the packs sent directly from Indofood in Indonesia – I am told they will be sending some new samples very soon! Can’t wait to try them!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sweet onions, turkey breast, two scrambled eggs and some Dua Belibis chilli sauce. Noodles are quite good – same style as the #1 from the Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time list. The flavor is nice – the noodles are coated with a slightly spicy but sweet flavor – and those little peppers pop up now and again and blow your head off – exhilarating! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 089686040692 .

How do they make Indomie? Watch and see! I believe this is an African plant but I’m sure its not much different in Indonesia.

Re-Review: Nissin Demae Ramen Black Garlic Oil Tonkortsu Flavour Instant Noodle

Since I don’t have a huge amount of noodles that haven’t been reviewed yet (around 8 at the moment and I could go through those in four or five says possibly), I’ve decided I should hit the overstock box and see what’s in there. My wife Kit got me a five pack of these for my birthday back in March and so I figure I should eat ’em up! Here’s the original review – look there for the original pics I did of the packaging, packets, etcetera.

Finished (click image to enlarge). I added thin-sliced rib eye, an egg, green onion, Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake and kizami shoga (pickled ginger). The noodles are nicely done – just what you expect from Demae Ramen. The broth was excellent – not too salty and had a rich, deep flavor. I stand by my 4.5/5.0 star rating from before – great stuff! UPC bar code 4897878830015.

The Hong Kong commercial for this stuff!

The International Lunch

Here’s what I had for lunch today (click to enlarge) – not a new review or anything, but thought it was interesting how many international flavors came together on this one. First, FMF Chow Noodles Masala Flavor from Fiji. Added kimchi, a Korean dish, some Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake from Japan, Dua Belibis chili sauce from Indonesia, some ham, stirfry veggies and sweet onion, and a 2 egg omelet with 2 slices of processed cheese and some Tabasco Jalapeno hot sauce – which I presume is all from the United States but might not be. Was pretty good – quite an interesting combo!

New TV Spot For Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun Black Cup With PSY

Unless you’ve been hiding under a proverbial rock for the last couple of months, you have heard the song ‘Gangnam Style‘ by South Korean pop star PSY at one time or another, seen the horse dance, etc. Well, After he sent Nongshim a video asking if he could do a commercial for them, they said yes.

Well today, the commercials have come out – they’re pretty funny. I still want to let it be known that I formally challenge PSY to a ramyun eating contest -maybe Shin Ramyun Black Cup? That’d be awesome! Anyways, here’s some videos to check out of the commercial.

Re-Review: Nissin Demae Ramen 出前一丁 Artificial Chicken Flavor (Hong Kong)

My son Andy, my wife Kit and I walked to the local 99 Ranch Market on Friday. He decided he needed more kamaboko and wanted to pick out some ramen himself to try. Here’s one he picked (he likes all things chicken flavored) and will get to try today. He’s letting me have a bite and a slurp of broth for making it for him.

Here’s the back of the package. Note that it mentioned adding the soup base and seasoning oil although I found no seasoning oil packet. I thought I’d look at the original review I did way back – ne’ery an oil packet there either(click to enlarge).

The noodle block – good size and weight to it. This would one I would consider a hefty brick.

The seasoning powder.

The soup base in all its glory.

Andy is a big fan of this stuff – he even wanted veggies! Not bad. Read his blog, Andy’s LEGO Stuff, here!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Andy requested some of the frozen stir-fry veggies and some of the kamaboko. Decent noodles – a little thinner and firmer than Top Ramen. The broth is a little stronger too – I would call it a slightly less Americanized flavor. Good stuff – Andy loved it! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4897878000036 – get it here.

Curry or shoyu? Curry – hands down! The Nissin Curry Demae Ramen is out of this world delicious.

This is a great one.

#738: Nissin U.F.O. (Unidentified Flying Object) Yakisoba

This one is a donation from Courtnay N. of Surrey, BC! She brought some back from a trip to Japan! Thanks! So this looks really interesting – let’s give it a try!

Here’s the bottom of the package (click image to enlarge).

This is what you see once you remove the plastic wrapping (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block – a nice, big, round disc!

Kind of looks like this piece I did a long time ago!

Under the noodle block, some veggies and – yes – dried meat!

Here’s the liquid seasoning pack.

The liquid seems to be yakisoba sauce and oil.

This looks like…

Seaweed to put on top! Sweet!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a little of the veggie mix we made, a little beef lunch meat, a little kizami shoga (pickled ginger) and a pinch of Ajishima Kimchi furikake. The noodles are a bit mushy; a bummer. I expected them to be a little higher quality. The yakisoba sauce mixture has a wonderful taste – I like how it is liquid instead of a powdered addition. The veggies are nice and the meat re hydrated nicely! The powdered seaweed adds a nice extra taste to everything. Wish the noodles were a little better, but the flavors are really good – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4902105022122 .

Yakisoban, to the rescue!

Yep – there’s a Super Nintendo game!

Okay so I’ve shown KPop and VPop, but here’s some Bubblegum JPop – Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. What I’ve noticed is that all three of these regional pop forms maintain intrusively catchy melodies that will eat your mind and spit it out on the sidewalk. My wife and I have listened to this album about a thousand times in the car already – she knows all the words and we have both developed sore necks and minds from the tunes.

A Donation From New York

A while back, I received a nice donation from Michelle L. of Tarrytown, New York. This week, I received and email saying she had sent another one! Here it is!

Wow – big bowls of JML noodles! A couple Little Cooks in there too! Thanks!

She also included these chopsticks! I have absolutely no luck using chopsticks whatsoever and these little chopstick guide things might help! Will have to give it a try! Thanks! You can get some too here!

Like to donate some noodles? Email me – [email protected] – and I’ll give you my address!

#737: Gấu Đỏ Tôm và Gà (Chicken & Shrimp Flavour)

Here’s another of the ones sent to me by Carter B. of Lancaster, PA – thanks again! He got this one whilst in Africa! Never seen this brand before here. Something interesting – see that little red band along the front? It comes off!

See? Weird huh? Haven’t seen anything like that before! Well, let’s give chicken and shrimp a try! By the way – Gấu Đỏ translates to Red Bear. Also, it looks like the beat is making noodles by pulling them! Awesome!

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge).

Here’s the noodle block.

A dry packet.

Contests are powder and a little bit of veggies.

Seasoned oil!

I’m expecting a little spiciness.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added an egg, some chicken lunch meat, a little veggie mix we made, a little Krazy Mixed Up Salt and some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The Noodles were kind of funky – strange texture and not enjoyable. The broth was okay but was missing something. Not my fave – 2.5 ouit of 5.0 stars. Happy Mother’s Day to all! UPC bar code 8934679943325 .

Gấu Đỏ TV commercial.

So in addition to K-Pop and J-Pop, there’s V-Pop!

Oh man what the heck – these guys are Yankees fans?!
