The first Indomie variety on the list in years and it’s really amazing. Basically take their Mi Goreng Rendang and include a sachet of real rendang in a retort pouch. This comes after recently hearing that Indomie Rendang is hard to find here in the United States, something I was surprised to hear since it’s such a popular product and such a good one. I’ve become enamored and thrilled with the straight ramen noodle varieties in recent years – especially ones from Hong Kong which have been on the last two The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time lists. This is Sau Tao’s first appearance on the list. A Thai flavor is delivered masterfully – broth has a great richness and crispness of tom yum kung – spicy and lemongrass and shrimp notes play together very well. Original review

Another one returning to The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time list, Red Chef’s Green Tom Yum Soup Noodles feature a fried noodle with a great mouthfeel and quantity. They work well with the broth which is like a mashup of tom yum and green curry. The spiciness and flavors are just great – it might seem like a strange gimmicky kind of thing but definitely not. I love the new and this is a new flavor for the instant noodle world. Original review

#6: Prima Taste Singapore Curry Wholegrain La Mian – Singapore

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2019 Edition

Since a very young age when my mother would cook curried chicken livers over rice, I’ve absolutely loved curry. This one is just mind blowing and has been on the top ten for years and years. The noodles are thick and chewy  – and have a rustic kind of feel to them. Marry that to the broth which comes from a large sachet of curry paste and one full of coconut milk powder, you end up with a rich, luxuriant experience you’ll love. I should note they also have a version with non-wholegrain noodles which is also very impressive. Original review

#5: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa – Malaysia

Back again with their rich curry noodle, CarJEN brings something very special to the table in their Nyonya Curry Laksa. You dip the paste seen on the spoon into the broth to flavor it and it has little bits of shrimp in there that really are a nice addition. Sweetness, spiciness, richness from coconut milk powder, and a nice plump noodle makes this so tasty and memorable. Original Review

#4: A-Sha Gourmet Braised Beef Noodle Soup – Taiwan

The Ramen Rater's Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2019 Edition

This is the highest position a Taiwanese variety has achieved in The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time before – congratulations, Taiwan! For a long time, I’ve really enjoyed this style of noodle from Taiwan. It’s wide, with a center line which is thicker, and the sides are thinner – which gives them a very unique and wonderful mouthfeel. I’ve also always thought that these would just sing is in a broth (usually they are presented with a combination of sauces but no broth). The soup is rich with a strong beef flavor and hint of Sichuan peppercorn that do not overwhelm. The nice part is the inclusion of real beef in here. It should be noted that there is a special version of this that comes out during Lunar New Year which includes Wagyu beef – very expensive at a whopping $15USD per serving!, but very tasty as well. #3: Liangchengmei Biang Biang Men – China

My wife Kit saw this while we were up in Canada and it piqued my curiosity so thought hey let’s give it a try. Noodles are very broad – over an inch. The flavoring is just superb – to use a word I normally don’t, this is yummy. What’s interesting too is that they included meat – at least I thought it was meat – it’s made from soy protein! Unique, delicious, and the highest a Chinese variety has achieved on The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time to date. Congratulations! Original review

#2: Red Chef Spicy Sakura Prawn Soup Noodles – Malaysia

Let the prawn-slaught begin! Returning to the #2 spot this year, we have a Red Chef variety that just gives and gives when it comes to sweet and savory prawn flavor. This umami bomb has a nice chewy noodle that is complimented by just the sweetest, strongest prawn broth with an excellent thickness and just the right amount of spiciness. What’s more they include a sachet of crispy onions to put on top that round things out so well. If you want to have a prawn freak out, this is an indispensable tool. Original review

For the fourth year in a row, Prima Taste wins with it’s excellent Wholegrain Laksa. If  abandoned on an island with only a life supply of instant noodles, I’d want them to be these, period. Hearty artisan noodles which are thick and of good quantity are combined with a broth which has a strong flavor and richness from coconut milk powder. A flavorful and striking noodle dish. Big Changes For Me

Some of you have been noticing I’ve been losing weight – thank you! In fact I’ve been working hard on that. Reviews I do are usually involving me eating maybe 5% of a bowl of noodles, if that. Everything else goes down the drain.

I keep my regime to around 1200~1500 calories a day. I’ve also been doing a lot of walking with my daughter Miriam. With her stroller decked out with lots of lights and a really loud speaker (I usually play a lot of Primus, Herbie Hancock and Tobacco), we walk all over town. My feet hurt, too! If you put together our walking from April 1st and April 2nd, it comes to 21.12 miles (33.989km)! No, that is NOT a typo. My doctor told me I had high cholesterol back in October and I decided to make some changes. I’ll find out how I’ve done later this month and let you guys know how I’ve done so far.

First, thanks to Robert Z for sending this along! Check out his amazing www.dadbert.com blog!! II mean wow – I’ve been wanting to try these for a while now and figured I would probably never get one. So yeah – it’s in here – real meat! Rendang is also one of my favorite things in the known universe. Here’s a little about it from Wikipedia –

Rendang is a spicy meat dish which originated from Indonesia, especially the ethnic group of Minangkabau people,[2] and is now commonly served across the country.[3] One of the characteristic foods of Minangkabau culture, it is served at ceremonial occasions and to honour guests.[4] Rendang is also served among the Malay community. Rendang is traditionally prepared by the Minangkabau community during festive occasions such as traditional ceremonies, wedding feasts and Hari Raya (Eid al-Fitr).

Although culinary experts often describe rendang as a curry,[2][5] rendang is usually not considered as such in Indonesia since it is richer and contains less liquid than is normal for Indonesian curries.[6] In 2011 an online poll of 35,000 people by CNN International chose rendang as the number one dish of their “World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods (Readers’ Pick)” list.[7] In 2018, rendang is officially recognised as one of 5 national dish of Indonesia.[8]

Finished (click to enlarge). Added fried onion, fried egg, cherry tomato, and coriander with a dash of BonCabe. The noodles were just great – the flavor clung to them happily and they had the right chew and gauge. The flavor was that of rendang – sweet and hot and full of flavor. The meat? Dry beef chunks and beans combined to make things tasty and really wonderful. I’m thrilled – nice when you get hyped up about something and it ends up being really great. 5.0 ouf of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 089686045017.

Here’s the second of four short little looks at Prima Taste’s new Ready Meals line. This one’s beef rendang. Rendang is an Indonesian dish of beef that’s cooked in coconut milk with lots of seasonings. There is wet and dry Rendang – the wet is what I’m guessing we have here. Here’s a little more info from Prima Taste –

Our Ready Meals are made up of 75% White Basmati Rice, 20% of Brown Basmati Rice and 5 % of Multigrains so it has high dietary and soluble fibre.
To promote good bacteria in the gut, prebiotics are also added! . And because it can be heated up in two ways – 90s by microwave or immersing unopened pouch in a covered pot of boiling water for 8 – 10 minutes, it is a convenient and nutritious food for all to enjoy at home, at work or even when out camping.

I had no clue that there was anywhere to go camping in Singapore – I thought it was like one huge city. I still need to investigate this! However, let’s check out this Ready Meal!

Finished (click to enlarge). Didn’t add anything, but had thought about throwing in some fried onions I have for a little crunch. So what gets me about these is the rice – it’s not mushpot and as you can see, the grains of Basmati aren’t a clumpy mess. The beef is everywhere in decent size and it’s moist and tasty. Glad they sent two of each variety because I think my wife will want to try this one. Oh yeah – 5.0 out of 5.0 stars -0  my tongue is definitely happy with this one! Yeah – it’s that time of year again! Cups are interesting; they usually hold a lot less water than a bowl, so the steeping process is a little different and so are the noodles. I’ve had some horrendous cups over the years, but then there are some that are really quite good. This last year has been a great one where cups are concerned! #10: Nongshim Sir Long Tang Creamy Beef Noodle Soup – United States

Sir Long Tang is a creamy beef noodle soup. Creamy beef soups are very common in South Korean cuisine – such varieties as Seollongtang and Gomtang feature broth that is made from boiling beef bones for hours and hours. Sir Long Tang has a very nice and rich beef flavor with a great creaminess and excellent noodles. Original review here

#9: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood Curry Flavour – Hong Kong

Since 1971, Nissin Cup Noodle has been synonymous with… Well, noodles in a cup! The noodles come out just perfectly in these. Not only that, there are copious amounts of veggies and seafood. Then there’s the flavor – a really nice Japanese curry with seafood notes – great stuff! This is it’s second year appearing in this spot. Original review here

#8: Paldo Kokomen Spicy Chicken Cup – South Korea

This is the third list this year that Paldo Kokomen has appeared on. The broth has such a great melding of the heat of jalapeno pepper and the flavor of chicken. The noodles are very good and the bits of chicken and vegetables are top notch. Dropped from 5th to 8th. Original review here

#7: Nissin Cup Noodle Chili Tomato – Japan

The noodles were broad and flat and had a very satisfying texture and feel to them; not bad at all. The broth has a nice tomato taste and lots of flavor. Bits of meat and veggies are throughout and make it a very hearty cup of noodles. Original review here

#6: GaGa Mi Instan Cup Milk Chicken Soup – Indonesia

The noodles are thin and light – they hydrated perfectly and have a gentle chew. The broth is fantastic – it’s a creamy flavor full of chicken goodness, some onion hints, and a slight spiciness. Original review here

#5: Mamee Chef Creamy Tom Yam Flavour – Malaysia

The noodles are just right – nicely cooked and gorged on the broth. The broth is the real star in this one – nice and strong citrus and spicy flavors abound and it has such a nice color to it. The garnish of vegetables and shrimp come out very nicely – the veggies are excellent as is the shrimp. Truly an excellent cup of noodles. Original review here

#4: Eat & Go Rendang Beef Flavour Fried Instant Noodle – Indonesia

The noodles come out nice after steeping. They have a standard gauge and good cgewiness. The flavor is great – sweet. spicy and beefy! Excellent stuff – and if it wasn’t good enough already, the garnish adds a really good finish to things. This was a real treat to enjoy. Original review here

#3: Nongshim Shin Black Spicy Pot-au-feu Flavor Premium Noodle Soup – United States

First, Nongshim made Shin Ramyun which is still incredibly popular. Then they upgraded and came out with Shin Ramyun Black. Finally, Shin Black has made it into a cup – and it’s really good! Rich beef flavor and real beef along with thick ramyun noodles. Premium stuff! Last year, I featured the version made in South Korea and this year we have the one made in the United States. #2: Mamee Mie Goreng Indonesia Spicy Sambal Flavour – Malaysia

The noodles came out so nicely – they have a great character of chew and whilst not in a broth, they’re not dry after being drained. The flavor is wonderful – spicy and tasty with that sweet-hot kick I love about mie goreng. The crunchy bits rounds everything out soundly. Original review here

#1: Mamee Chef Curry Laksa Flavour – Malaysia

There are some flavors erupting from Malaysia that are just fantastic and this instant noodle cup exudes them like a rock star. The noodles came out excellent – pretty much identical to the packaged version. The broth and garnish as well were great – rich curry flavor and premium garnishes including little tofu puff bits and pepper. I can definitely say this is the best instant cup I’ve ever had. Re-Review: Meet The Manufacturer: Eat & Go Rendang Beef Flavor Fried Instant Noodle

As I said in the last post, today is the anniversary of the first time my wife and I spoke to eachother, four years ago. More on that in the video at the bottom. I had the fortune to be able to try real rendang yesterday! They make it at Waroeng Jajanan! I’ll do a special post about it soon! This one was really good last time – let’s revisit it!

The side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, fill to line with boiling water and let steep for 3 minutes. In a separate bowl, put the sachet contents, minus the fried wonton and fried onion. Drain. Add to bowl and stir and garnish with the onion and wonton.

The flavor is really good – sweet, salty and spicy. The garnish is great too – crisp and flavorful. Everything comes together very well – excellent! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 8992388133178.

After one of the worst years of my life, 2009 ended on a really positive note as I met my future wife in person at Oakland airport down in California. I will never look at New Year’s Eve the same ever again!

#1214: Eat & Go Rendang Beef Flavour Fried Instant Noodle

Here’s another from my friend in Jakarta, Indonesia – thanks! I’ve got high hopes for this one. Why? Well, the Spicy Chicken version placed on my Top Ten Instant Noodle Cups of 2013. Also, Indomie’s Rendang placed in the Top Ten Instant Noodles of 2013 list. I guess we’ll see how this does! Let’s check it out!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat-free but check for yourself. Take out the sachets and fork, add enough boiling water to cover the noodles and let sit for 3 minutes. Drain off the water, then add the sachet contents, stir and you’re done.

#10 MAMA Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles – Thailand


I had tried this ages back and wasn’t very fond of it. At the request of readers, I gave it another try and found it to be the best Thai variety I’ve had thus far. The strong bite of the heat and the crisp citrus flavors are of authentic Tom Yum. The noodles are thin and almost crumble when chewed – the texture is different from any others on the list. The creaminess is not of dairy but a cream-like color from boiling shrimp. Full review

 #9: Paldo Kokomen Spicy Chicken Flavor – South Korea


It all started with a South Korean comedian in a TV show cooking contest – the resit is history. Kokomen Is a South Korean ‘white broth’ instant ramyun. It has a great jalapeno chicken kind of flavor which took South Korea by storm. Full review

#8: Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Premium Noodle Soup – United States


Everyone’s had Nongshim’s Shin Ramyun once. It’s spicy and full of noodles. Shin Ramyun Black is Nongshim’s premium version of Shin Ramyun – containing nice big pieces of mushroom and freeze-dried beef that springs to life. Truly excellent ramyun. Made in the United States.  Full review

#7: Sapporo Ichiban Chow Mein – United States


This has always held a spot on my Top Ten Instant Noodles lists. Why? First off, it’s got some great noodles. They suck up all the water as they cook and once you open the seasoning packet and stir in the flavor, the smell is tantalizing. The best bonus here is the little packet of seaweed powder. It’s just right. Made in the United States.  Full review

#6: Myojo Ippei-chan Yakisoba Japanese Style Noodles – Japan


Yakisoba, delivered wonderfully. The tray is filled with boiling water and also acts as a strainer! Great noodles, top-notch veggies – and a bonus: mayonnaise! Makes for a meal of pure deliciousness. Full review

#5: Indomie Curly Noodle With Grilled Chicken Flavour Special Quality Instant Noodles – Indonesia


They got it right when they said these noodles are special. They’re broad and thin with such an enjoyable texture. The flavor is sweet, spicy and perfect. Full review

#4: Nongshim Jinjja Jinjja Flamin’ Hot & Nutty Noodle Soup – United States

I ate a lot of instant noodles in my time. Within the last year or so, I’ve enjoyed this one multiple times. Jinjja Jinjja’s quality noodles, strong heat and unique pork, peanut and black sesame notes make this a real stand-out in the South Korean ramyun market and now here in the United States. #3: Indomie Mi Instan Mi Goreng Rendang – Indonesia


A deep and rich curry flavor with just the right amount of spiciness. These noodles have a great texture and consistency and taste so good. This ‘stir noodle’ variety is superb. Full review

Curry is one of my favorite all time flavors. Here you’ll find the same high quality lamian noodles and a pair of packets – one of coconut powder and one of curry paste. So simple and so perfect. Truly exceptional. Full review

#1: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian – Singapore


Pair steamed lamian noodles with a packet of coconut powder and a packet of paste and you’ve got a real game changer here. The noodles are high quality and the broth is luxuriant; light in color with beads of chili oil float in a ballet of splendor. Full review

Meet The Manufacturer: Prima Taste Rendang Curry Sauce Kit

I know, thewse aren’t noodles but I thought it’d be nice to show some of the other things that Prima Taste sent. This one’s for making rendang – a spicy curried beef.

Finished (click to enlarge). Used some beef that we got at H Mart that’s usually used for Korean BBQ (the folks at Prima Taste said it’s usually beef that’s in chunks one uses). We had it atop some rice. This stuff was very rich and tasty – lots of serious flavors going on! We really liked it a lot. You can get it here.

#715 Indomie Mi Goreng Rendang (Indonesian Import)

I couldn’t wait for Meet The Manufacturer: Indomie week to try this. It’s a nice day here in the low 70’s and this said ‘eat me,’ so I will. This was one of the ones sent to me by Susienta S. of Indofoods CBR in Jakarta, Indonesia! Thanks again – and let’s give this one a try! Hey wait a minute – maybe we should research this a little first. So. what I’ve heard is that Rendang is a spicy beef curry. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about Rendang:

Rendang is a spicy meat dish which originated from the Minangkabau ethnic group of Indonesia,[1] and is now commonly served across the country.[2] One of the characteristic foods of Minangkabau culture, it is served at ceremonial occasions and to honour guests.[3] Also popular in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the southern Philippines and southern Thailand, rendang is traditionally prepared by the Indonesian community during festive occasions. Culinary expert often describe rendang as: ‘West Sumatra caramelized beef curry’.[4] Though rendang[5] is sometimes described as being like a curry, and the name is sometimes applied to curried meat dishes in Malaysia, authentic rendang is nothing like a curry.[1] In 2011 an online poll by 35,000 people held by CNN International chose Rendang as the number one dish of their ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list.[6]

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge). For those of you who aren’t familiar with Indonesian instant noodles, a lot of them are prepared differently – like this one. It pays to read the instructions on every pack of instant noodles you try – especially if they’re from different cultures! Cooking this up like a soup could be disastrous!

Here’s the dual packet of dry seasonings. The ‘bumbu’ on the left is the dry base and the ‘cabe’ on the right is chili powder. I would love to know – does that little guy on the chili label have a name? Anyone know anything about him? Please post a comment!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Okay so I took some artistic liberties on this one. Added a little roast beef and stir-fry vegetables while boiling the noodles. I used a star-shaped cookie cutter and fried two eggs using it.  Fried a piece of roast beef and laid it on top. Added a little lettuce. Added some Huy Fong Sriracha hot sauce, Krazy Mixed Up Salt and fried shallots on the eggs. I also dropped some kizami shoga (pickled ginger) in the mix. Wow – this is great stuff! The noodles are chewy enough without being too chewy. The flavor is excellent – like a hot curry beef taste that works so well. I love it. This is one of those times when being the Ramen Rater is the best thing in the world. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars!  I highly recommend this one! UPC bar code 089686910704.

What a treasure trove of noodles! Many of you will note that I’ve reviewed most of these already – but it’s been so long – most of the Indomie varieties that were sent were reviewed literally years ago and so re-reviews are coming up with more detail and info! Thanks Jim! Stickers are on the way!

#75: Indomie Mi Goreng Rendang Instant Noodles

Ah the glorious 99 Ranch Market. It takes about 40 minutes to walk there (at a very fast walk), pick out some noodles and then walk home.

Today I picked the 49 cent Indomie Mi Goreng Rendang. Never ever have I tried this before. I read someone reviewed it as being “the hottest curry flavor ever” and that piqued my curiosity.

So there was a flavored oil, a sweet soy sauce and a little sachet of fried onions hooked together on the left there, and on the right is chili powder and seasoning powder. I’m gathering that rendang means beef as the english on the packaging mentioned beef. Funny, no mention of curry…

The final product. I added some fried shallot three fried eggs and some kizami shoga (hot pink ginger). I think the other review was a little off. They mentioned heat. I think our palates must differ in the extreme as the heat was very slight. I really liked the flavor here too – a nice beef kind of taste to it and since it didn’t have the usual sweet hot chili paste (manas pedas) it was very mellow even with the chili powder. All in all, this tasted great! 4.5 out of 5 stars.
