#2229: Kang Shi Fu Artificial Beef With Sauerkraut Flavour

Here’s yet another one kindly sent to me by a reader named Colin from back east – thanks! A lot of people think Germany when they think sauerkraut and that makes sense; it’s a German word for pickled cabbage. But pickled cabbage is exceedingly popular in Asia as well. Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy! NOTE: this is the method I’ve used for pretty much all of the Master Kong/Kang Shi Fu variants as the package never have instructions for a cooking method; not even this one in English.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion and beef. The noodles are plentiful and soft with a nice character to them. The broth has a good tanginess – definite notes of pickled cabbage here. The sauerkraut is abundant and of good quality – all worked together nicely. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. #2166: JML Instant Noodle Artificial Beef Flavor & Sour Pickled Cabbage

Purple! Nothing like purple. Purple crayons, The Color Purple, Purple Rain… Actually, I’m not really a fan of any of those; but when I see the color of purple on an instant noodle package, especially from Taiwan, Hong Kong or China, it usually denotes something pickled. Indeed, here we have sour pickled cabbage. This isn’t quite like sauerkraut but kind of like it. Anyways, let’s crack into this one – another kindly send by colin. Thanks again!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add everything to a bowl. Pour 500ml boiling water over everything and cover for 3-4 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added coriander, spring onion and Chinese sausage. The noodles are light and almost fluffy; definitely on the plentiful side as well. The broth was very good – a salty and beefy excursion with sour notes and a light spiciness. #1948: Sichuan Baijia Artificial Pickled Cabbage Fish Flavor Instant Vermicelli

I’ve been checking out a few of these Baijia varieties recently, and they’ve been interesting. When I first started reviewing, I generally found the flavors and varieties to be pretty horrid, but after a few years , I’m starting to come around. Pickled cabbage and fish, eh? Well, let’s have a look.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion. The vermicelli hydrated well – I cut twice with kitchen scissors to make it more manageable with a fork. They’re a little slimy but have a nice gauge and feel to them. The broth on the other hand wasn’t really my thing. Although spicy, the ‘pickled’ aspect was just a bit too acidic. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6926410392563.

ERROR – RE-REVIEW NECESSARY – #1863: Sichuan Baijia Broad Noodle Pickled Vegetable Artificial Beef Flavor

NOTE: I assumed that all of the Sichuan Baijia Broad Noodle series were supposed to be drained. This was apparently was NOT supposed to be drained, hence the review score of 0 stars. It will be re-reviewed soon! Thanks to Bundi R. for bringing this to my attention.

It’s always awesome when I go to the store with my poor vision and my wife sees something and asks me if I’ve tried it. Sure enough, this was one of those occasions. I recently had the Sichuan Baijia Artificial Spicy Fei Chang a couple of weeks ago – it had been on my bottom ten list for years and really kind of one of the main reasons I wasn’t reviewing Baijia stuff so much. After not trying it in 5 years, I found that my tastebuds had done a bit of a metamorphosis. Where I found this more traditional Chinese flavor horrible before, I found it much more to my liking. So now at the store, I’m looking at Baijia in a different way. Today, I’ll try something I’ve not seen before – a broad noodle. I’ve seen broad noodles before, but not this broad – you’ll see what I mean. I want to thank Bobby Y. for helping me decipher the cooking instructions.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). To prepare, add noodle block and vegetable sachet to 600ml boiling water and steep for 5 minutes. Drain. Add in contents of other sachets and stir. Enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added some beef. The broad noodles hydrated very well. They have a good chew to them and were easily navigable. Good quantity too. The flavor was hideous. I am thoroughly bummed about this, too. The saltiness was off the charts – inedible! I also noticed that the sodium contents was 3,120mg according to the package – 155% of daily value. Yikes. #1655: Sichuan Baijia Artificial Pickled Vegetable Beef Flavor

So yesterday we went to the new Asian Food Center on 130th and Aurora southwest of here. Was hoping to find a lot of new varieties I hadn’t tried yet and found a couple – and this is one of them. I haven’t had much luck at all with Baijia products in the past – I think it’s just a taste that doesn’t translate well for me. However, I never met an instant noodle I hadn’t tried before that I didn’t want to. So with that, let’s have a look at this Sichuan Baijia variety.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). To prepare, add thread and all sachet contents to a bowl. Add 500ml boiling water and cover for 5-6 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

So it’s not a wheat noodle, rice vermicelli or bean thread. This is a sweet potato thread.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mung bean sprouts, beef and white onion. The thread hydrated very nicely. I recommend using kitchen scissors to cut them to reasonable lengths once cooked. They are lightly chewy and have a likable gauge. The broth was very interesting. A strong heat and a kind of acidic taste – black vinegar I think. A lot of other flavors linger around in it as well. The beans or peas hydrated very well in this one and were a welcome addition. I liked this one far more than any Baijia variety I’ve tried in the past – maybe it’s time to try more of them. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6932760690112.

I thought to myself recently that it would be great to end 2014 and start 2015 with a new top ten list – but from where? A couple places came to mind, and Hong Kong sounded like a good one. I’ve found a lot of excellent instant noodles that have been from Hong Kong. Been hoping to see more arrive here in the United States, but many of the ones on this list I’ve found up in Canada. #10: Nissin Demae Iccho XO Sauce Seafood Flavour

The noodles are pretty good with a very standard gauge and quality. The broth however is quite nice. The XO sauce gives it a very rich seafood flavor that is most enjoyable and hearty. The inclusion of a decent amount of veggies and narutomaki rounds things out well. Original review

#9: Four Seas Seaweed Hot & Spicy Instant Noodle (Mushroom & Beef Flavour)

The noodles were pretty good – nice gauge and a good mouthfeel. The slight crumble gave them a kind of nice texture with the broth. The broth has a definite spicy beef flavor and then the mushroom flavor which is kind of in the background and very good. As for the seaweed, it really complimented things quite a bit and made for a fitting garnish. Original review

#8: Doll Instant Noodle Pickled Vegetable Flavour

Doll’s noodles always look very nice – not bleached white but a nice warm rich wheaten yellow color. They are excellent as far as texture and flavor go too.  The broth was perfect – not strong but not weak. It was just right. I added the two fried eggs and all together this was a fantastic bowl of noodles for a early evening nosh while studying for a computer tech certification. Original review

#6: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood

So first off the veggies rehydrated quite nicely. Also, there are bits of seafood in there – real ones! Apparently its pollack, but also there is nondairy creamer in it! Weird… The noodles are great, the broth is great, everything is great! Original review

#5: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood Curry

The noodles steeped perfectly. The vegetables and little bits of dehydrated fish came out just perfect, and the broth was very curry. My only complaint was that the curry flavor overwhelmed the seafood taste so that there was really none at the end of the day. I really liked this one though. This one was in the 2013 Top Ten Cups list, the first for Hong Kong. Original review

#4: Doll Instant Noodles Artificial Chicken Flavour

This is absolutely spot on – possibly the best chicken instant noodle I’ve ever had – here’s why. The noodles are in the way that Doll’s usually are – great texture and firmness, not bleached but golden. The broth is very hearty, and flavorful. Original review

#3: Nissin Demae Ramen Sesame Oil Flavour Noodles With Soup Base

The noodles are neat – thin and very elastic with a great consistency – some of the best I’ve ever had from a big cup. The broth is quite good too – a nice sesame flavor and rich body. #2: Fuku Superior Soup Instant Noodle

This stuff is EXACTLY like Nissin Chikin except it has a little extra powder with it! Originally, my favorite noodles were Nissin ‘Roasted Ramen,’ a product they came out with in the USA when I was a kid. They stopped making it so we hunted for it and they were able to help us out at Uwajimaya in Seattle where they clued my folks in about the Nissin Chikin. This is exactly like that stuff and I’m quite happy. Original review

#1244: Uni-President Unif-100 Pickled Cayenne Flavor Beef Ramen

Here’s one that Joe B. and Sarah B. sent me from Nottingham, UK – thanks! I was going to review this yesterday, but it’s been a little tricky; you see, there’s no English on this really at all. I’ve been asking my friend Bobby Y. on Facebook questions about it and got the title and directions from him – thanks – saved me on this one! Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Not sure if there’s meat or not. To prepare, I was stumped. Bobby Y. said there weren’t any directions on the package! I ran into this last time I did one of these and used 400ml water for a few minutes. I think this time I’ll try 400ml and then add 100ml more and taste it then. It looks rather soupy on the packaging, and 600ml water seems to be pretty standard in Chinese variants like this. UPDATE – just walked to the local Asian market to get some leeks and green onions. Strolled down the noodle aisle and saw the export versions of Unif-100. Felt it out and it’s a round noodle block too. Calls for 500ml water, so that’s what I’m going with – for 4 minutes.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added beef and leek I sauteed with garlic salt and some green onion. The noodles are pretty good – nice gauge and quality. Quite a decent amount of them too. The broth is interesting; it has a sort of beef-vinegar-spicy triumvirate melding together. Usually I’m not a big fan of vinegar and beef, but this worked well. The little peppers? They’re salty and pretty hot. They’re like pickled peppers. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6925303710446.

#788: Uni-President 100 Old Clay Pot Pickled Vegetables Beef Noodles

Here’s the first review of the batch of six instant noodles sent to me by Bo H. of China! This one looks really interesting; I’m not 100% sure that this is the correct title either, but this is the best translation I could get. I wonder who that guy is?

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). I couldn’t find any direction on how to cook so I’m going to go with 400mL boiling water, add noodles and seasoning powder, then when done add the pickled beef on top.

Here’s a larger chunk of the noodles. They came from China and took a month and a half, so they fared pretty well.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a few pieces of onion. The noodles are good – they have a decent texture and a good character. Not chewy but soft – not mushy though. The broth has a very nice flavor – spicy and flavorful! The veggies and pickled stuff is all over and has a very nice flavor. This is excellent stuff – really good! #579: Baijia Sichuan Pickled Flavor Instant Sweet Potato Thread

Baijia has been a brand I loathe thus far. Let’s see what we have in this one.

I can’t read Chinese, but from what I got, you put everything in a bowl, add boiling water and cover for 5-6 minutes. So that’s what I did.

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles are very weird; they’re thin and hard to eat to be honest. I think this is standard for sweet potato thread. The broth? Greasy. The flavor? Probably the best s far for a Baijia product that I’ve tried. Still in all, not anything enjoyable in my book. At least it’s slightly spicy. 1.75 out of 5.0 stars.

#455: Baijia Single Noble Pickled Radish And Duck Flavor Instant Sweet Potato Noodle ( Cup )

Baijia. Probably the single brand with the lowest consecutive ratings I’ve given. But lo and behold, I continue reviewing them – I believe that at some point there will be something awesome from them! Perhaps this pickled radish and duck flavored sweet potato noodle cup will be the holy grail? We shall see…

The first thing I noticed is that the Baijia logo is a sticker. Notice at the lower left – that little white square? Another sticker. These are covering up something, but I am not sure – probably domestic markings not meant to be seen in export. Definitely noteworthy though.

So I peel off the stickers – re-branding with a new logo. Okay let’s move on.

Hey sweet – a new fork! There’s a new fork review for it here in my ongoing review of included forks. From left to right we’ve got some odd looking vegetables, a powdered dry seasoning packet and then some seasoned oil/paste stuff.

So even though it’s a cup, they put the directions for a packaged noodle on the side. Okay whatever. Just put this to let ya know I did read these directions. I’ve had a couple of comments on how I just don’t get it with this Baijia stuff. I think I get it – not really rocket science here.

So this is what sweet potato noodles look like – pretty weird huh? The powdered seasoning was almost like a kind of cheese. Anyways, I added boiling water to the line and covered it for 6 minutes.

Click image to enlarge. Whoa. Gaze upon it. I don’t know what the beans are but they’re kind of weird. The noodles are very mushy and clumpy and greasy. It is a tangled mushy noodle mess. As far as the taste goes, it’s not bad – kind of salty and has some kind of flavor I can’t pinpoint. The veggie bits remind me of the Unif Sauerkraut flavor bowl I had a while back. As far as a rating… I can’t say that I like it, however I find it kind of fascinating that a product like this would be constructed and then sold. Somebody out there really likes it. Unfortunately, my American palate is a little challenged and I can’t give it my blessing. 0.25 out of 5.0 stars – really inedible and not worthy of being called a food.

#430: Quickchow Pancit Canton Toyo-Mansi

Toyo Mansi huh? Well, I’m pretty sure that mansi is lime, but toyo? Well, Wikipedia had the answer:

Toyo’t Kalamansi (sometimes referred to simply as toyomansi) – soy sauce with kalamansi lime juice

Even better, I found it on this page of Philippine condiments! Pretty cool!

Dry powder, soy sauce and seasoned oil. I imagine the soy sauce has the lime infused in it.

Click image to enlarge. I added a little Kizami Shoga (pickled ginger) and a little fried shallot for garnish. Well I must say this is stupendous and wonderful stuff and I could eat it every day. Very much like Indomie’s Mi Goreng line. I like the noodles and the flavor and everything. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – delicious!

#351: Nissin Top Ramen Picante Beef Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

 

So today I opted for something different from Nissin – Top Ramen Picante Beef. Kind of funny; why don’t they make a teriyaki beef or a stir fry flavor over here? Anyways, here we go…

A single packet of flavor – rather non descript too.

Dark and slightly chunky powder.
