#3171: Doll Bowl Noodle Satay & Beef Flavour – Hong Kong

#3171: Doll Bowl Noodle Satay & Beef Flavour - Hong Kong

Here’s one I found up in Canada at Aberdeen Centre in a shop that was rife with Hello Kitty plushies and exotic candies and snacks next to the food court – I want to say it was called something like Paint Box or Art Box. This one was a nice surprise as it’s been tough to find Doll Brand varieties other than their export pack versions around here. I reall would love to do a Meet The Manufacturer series with Doll, so if you’re listening, please contact me! Let’s check out this Beef & Satay variety from Hong Kong!

#2135: Doll Instant Noodle Supreme Abalone And Chicken Flavour

Another one I reviewed as part of a series of Hong Kong varieties in conjunction with an interview by Apple Daily news of HK. I have a feeling if you dig through my reviews for the word abalone, you’re not going to find scads of varieties I’ve been very fond of. I’m hoping this might be one I enjoy, but I have my doubts. I guess the only way to find out it to try it with an open mind and mouth. Let’s give it a go!

The back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains fish and chicken. To prepare, add noodle block to 500ml boiling water and cook for 1 1/2 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

These noodles look different from the ones I’ve been sampling from Hong Kong – much thinner.

The dry soup base sachet.

A granular mixture with little flecks throughout.

A seasoned oil sachet.

Looks very abalone!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles are thinner and have a sturdier chew than the rest of the instant I’ve been sampling from Hong Kong lately. The broth though is more chicken than abalone I think and the whole thing just rubs me the wrong way. Like I said, I wasn’t expecting this would be to my liking from the outset, and with an open mind and a sad tongue, this one gets 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4892333102348.

#2092: Doll Instant Noodle Preserved Vegetable Flavour

Here’s another one I reviewed as part of a collaboration with Hong Kong’s Apple Daily news. They sent me a bunch of varieties – this is the second vegetable-centered one from Doll. Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Add in dry sachet and stir. Top with pickled vegetables and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base sachet.

Flecked with little bits of vegetable.

The pickled vegetable sauce.

Has a slightly piquant scent!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles are very nice in gauge and texture – something I’ve come to expect from Doll pack noodles. The broth is kind of like a broccoli spinach flavored one, not at all bland, but slightly bitter. The pickled vegetables go well with it and are of good quality. The preserved bits of mustard are good. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4892333102096.

#2069: Doll Instant Noodle Vegetarian Flavour

This is another one from the series I did for Apple Daily news of Hong Kong. I haven’t had any of this Doill series in ages and I remember I liked them very much. Vegetarian though; usually a tough sell for me. Let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. to prepare, add noodle block to 500ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

A granular mixture.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander, spring onion, chilli flake and baby corn. The noodles are superb here – good backbone and gauge. My favorite Doll noodles are from this line. The broth has a mushroom taste – not at all weak, and almost tastes beefy. A very nice vegetarian variant. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4892333100658.

#2044: Doll Hello Kitty Dim Sum Noodle Japanese Soy Sauce Flaviour

A while back, I was all but out of instant noodles and put out a call for some. One of the people who responded was Prima Taste – they sent some from Hong Kong and this is one of them – thank you! My wife is a big fan of Hello Kitty and we’ve tried the Curry flavor one in the past. Let’s have a look in this soy sauce flavor one!

Detail from the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains fish. To prepare, add in sachet contents and fill to line with boiling water. Cover and let stand for 2 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).

Hey what’s this?

It’s a little playing card – the other one had one of these as well (click to enlarge)!

The little noodle block.

The powder soup base.

A soy scented powder.

The solid ingredients.

Some veggies and little pieces of Hello Kitty kamaboko!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles hydrated nicely and have a thin and flat skinny gauge. The chew was alright. The broth was a light shoyu (soy sauce) and a little ho-hum. The supplied vegetables and kamaboko were unremarkable, although eating Hello Kitty faces is definitely enjoyable. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 6900082020177.

#1972: Doll Spicy Flavour Instant Mifun

Here’s one from Colin of Arlington, MA! He sent a great big box of varieties  after I called out to readers for new stuff to review! Thanks! This one surprised me; I haven’t reviewed anything by Doll brand in a very long time and I know it’s a popular brand in Hong Kong. It’s interesting that Colin has access to such a different range of products on the east coast… Anyways, from what I can surmise, mifun might also be known as maifun. These are rice vermicelli. Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, stir noodle block into 500ml boiling water and cook 3 minutes. Add in contents of sachets. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry seasoning sachet.

Has a spicy scent.

A liquid sachet.

An oily paste.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Dodo fish balls and coriander. The noodles are pretty good – 3 minutes did them well. I recommend as always using a pair of kitchen scissors to cut them into a manageable size – two cross-cuts should do the trick. The broth has a very light flavor – a little salty, a little spicy, nicely oily. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4892333100153.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time Hong Kong 2015 Edition

I thought to myself recently that it would be great to end 2014 and start 2015 with a new top ten list – but from where? A couple places came to mind, and Hong Kong sounded like a good one. I’ve found a lot of excellent instant noodles that have been from Hong Kong. Been hoping to see more arrive here in the United States, but many of the ones on this list I’ve found up in Canada. I would definitely like to reach out to instant noodle companies in Hong Kong to take part in Meet The Manufacturer; there’s not been a Hong Kong participant yet! With that, here’s the top ten instant noodles of Hong Kong – the best and most memorable – from the last 1,553 reviews. Enjoy and Happy New Year, Hong Kong!

#10: Nissin Demae Iccho XO Sauce Seafood Flavour

The noodles are pretty good with a very standard gauge and quality. The broth however is quite nice. The XO sauce gives it a very rich seafood flavor that is most enjoyable and hearty. The inclusion of a decent amount of veggies and narutomaki rounds things out well. Original review

#9: Four Seas Seaweed Hot & Spicy Instant Noodle (Mushroom & Beef Flavour)

The noodles were pretty good – nice gauge and a good mouthfeel. The slight crumble gave them a kind of nice texture with the broth. The broth has a definite spicy beef flavor and then the mushroom flavor which is kind of in the background and very good. As for the seaweed, it really complimented things quite a bit and made for a fitting garnish. Original review

#8: Doll Instant Noodle Pickled Vegetable Flavour

Doll’s noodles always look very nice – not bleached white but a nice warm rich wheaten yellow color. They are excellent as far as texture and flavor go too.  The broth was perfect – not strong but not weak. It was just right. I added the two fried eggs and all together this was a fantastic bowl of noodles for a early evening nosh while studying for a computer tech certification. Original review

#7: Doll Instant Noodle Spicy Tonkotsu Flavour

First, the noodles are very nice, high quality and very tasty. The broth has a nice flavor to it and was perfect. I really like Doll products and this is no exception. Original review

#6: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood

So first off the veggies rehydrated quite nicely. Also, there are bits of seafood in there – real ones! Apparently its pollack, but also there is nondairy creamer in it! Weird… The noodles are great, the broth is great, everything is great! Original review

#5: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood Curry

The noodles steeped perfectly. The vegetables and little bits of dehydrated fish came out just perfect, and the broth was very curry. My only complaint was that the curry flavor overwhelmed the seafood taste so that there was really none at the end of the day. I really liked this one though. This one was in the 2013 Top Ten Cups list, the first for Hong Kong. Original review

#4: Doll Instant Noodles Artificial Chicken Flavour

This is absolutely spot on – possibly the best chicken instant noodle I’ve ever had – here’s why. The noodles are in the way that Doll’s usually are – great texture and firmness, not bleached but golden. The broth is very hearty, and flavorful. Original review

#3: Nissin Demae Ramen Sesame Oil Flavour Noodles With Soup Base

The noodles are neat – thin and very elastic with a great consistency – some of the best I’ve ever had from a big cup. The broth is quite good too – a nice sesame flavor and rich body. The vegetables were excellent as well – great re-hydration and quality and the narutomaki was plentiful. Original review

#2: Fuku Superior Soup Instant Noodle

This stuff is EXACTLY like Nissin Chikin except it has a little extra powder with it! Originally, my favorite noodles were Nissin ‘Roasted Ramen,’ a product they came out with in the USA when I was a kid. They stopped making it so we hunted for it and they were able to help us out at Uwajimaya in Seattle where they clued my folks in about the Nissin Chikin. This is exactly like that stuff and I’m quite happy. Original review

#1: Nissin Demae Ramen Shoyu Tonkotsu Artificial Pork Flavour

The noodles are great – gauge and chew are very good. The broth is wonderful – has a very rich pork and soy flavor that was well balanced and deep. Hooray for Hong Kong! Original review

#1217: Doll Hello Kitty Dim Sum Noodle Japanese Curry Flavour

Here’s one that was sent by Abbie C. of Hong Kong – thanks! I always try to source Hello Kitty and Pokemon related instants as my wife likes Hello Kitty and my son’s a Pokemaniac. Let’s check this one out!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). To make it, add boiling water up to the line and let it sit a couple minutes.

Here’s the lid (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

A prize! Here’s the front and back of what looks to be a little playing card.

The powder soup base sachet.

Has a nice curry scent.

The solid ingredients sachet.

Little bits of vegetable and Hello Kitty kamaboko!

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles are your typical cup noodles. They are thin and flat. They have a very light chew to them. The broth is a nice and rich Japanese curry – very nice. The veggies hydrated well. The kamaboko? Well, just like all hydrated kamaboko, they’re slightly rubbery and more of an add texture than something with much flavor. The added bonus of being able to chew up Hello Kitty’s head is quite nice. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6900082020276.

Here’s a TV spot for a Hello Kitty menagerie of sorts.

The Ramen Rater Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2011 & 2012 Editions

Here it is – the new Ramen Rater Top Ten List! It was originally released on Foodiggity.com on January 9th, 2011 as an exclusive guest post I did. Now, here it is on The Ramen Rater for your perusal with links to all of the corresponding reviews! Enjoy!

UPDATE: The 2013 list is now available HERE.

Number 10 – Singapore – Koka Instant Non-Fried Noodles Spicy Black Pepper Flavour

This stuff is amazing; it contains a block of instant noodles that are exceedingly light and very low in fat. This doesn’t end up with low in taste though, especially with its garnish pack’s mention that the veggies in there vary depending on the season of production! It has a nice peppery taste and a little heat but not overwhelmingly so. This is a real treat and goes great with eggs. Original Review

Number 9 – Hong Kong – Doll Instant Noodle Artificial Chicken Flavour

Yeah I know – chicken instant noodles. How boring! Not this one – the broth is very good – it warms one’s innards on a cold day like nothing else. This is especially good with an egg or two added with about 45 seconds remaining as it cooks in the pot – makes the broth even heartier. A very relaxing bowl of noodles. Original Review

Number 8 – Japan – Sapporo Ichiban Shio Ramen Japanese Style Noodles

This is a very recent addition to the Top Ten list. Having tried Shio instant noodle varieties in the past, I had a feeling this would be a good one, and it truly was. The noodles were very hearty and the broth had an almost buttery flavor. I found this one very good with some baked chicken, green onions and hard boiled egg. Comes with a little packet of sesame seeds! Original Review

Number 7 – Korea – Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Premium Noodle Soup

Twenty years after the introduction of the well-known Shin Ramyun, Nong Shim brought out Shin Ramyun Black. A huge block of noodles, a veggie packet that also has freeze dried beef, red spicy seasoning and onion and oxtail soup packets make this a culinary onslaught of epic proportion. This was best enjoyed using a recipe from Eat Your Kimchi’s site which involved adding an egg, bok choy and a single slice of processed cheese. The beef pieces spring to life and the whole thing is excellent. Original Review

Number 6 – Japan – Myojo Hyoubanya no Chukasoba Japanese Style Noodles Oriental Flavor

A very good, very traditional instant noodle from Japan. Noodles are a little chewy and the broth has hints of seafood. Was enjoyable with a couple eggs cooked with the noodles and a little baked chicken with salt and pepper. Original Review

Number 5 – Indonesia – Mie Sedaap Instant Kari Spesial Bumbu Kari Kental

Like spicy? Like curry? This one from Indonesia fills both criteria and then some. The noodles are good but the real star here is the broth; a bit greasy and so flavorful. Not only a hot curry taste but had sweetness as well. Was excellent with a couple fried eggs. Original Review

Number 4 – Japan – Sapporo Ichiban Japanese Style Noodles Chow Mein

This stuff is great. It’s cooked with a small amount of water as the noodles gobble it all up. The flavor is sweet and salty and pure enjoyable. What’s more is a packet of ground seaweed is included which makes it all the more enjoyable. Goes well with a little bit of roast beef and some chopped onions. Original Review

Number 3 – Japan – Nissin Yakisoba – with Mayonnaise / Mustard Packet

Yakisoba is a very commonly enjoyed dish in Japan – and this variety puts a unique twist on it. You fill the box with boiling water and then afterwards, there’s a little drain spout to get rid of excess water. Add the flavoring and stir – then comes the fun as there’s a little packet that dispenses mayonnaise out of one reservoir and mustard out of the other! This is quite good – especially the vegetables. Nothing to add to this one – enjoy in its native state! Original Review

Number 2 – Indonesia – Indomie Mi Goreng Rasa Ayam Panggang Jumbo Barbecue Chicken Flavour Fried Instant Noodles

First off, it’s a jumbo pack, which is helpful as this is such a great tasting package of instant noodles. Second, it comes with a whopping five seasonings – from sweet soy sauce to spicy chili sauce. The noodles are served drained without a broth. The flavorings in concert with a couple fried eggs, some pickled ginger and fried shallots make this one not to miss. Original Review

Number 1 – Indonesia – Indomie Special Fried Curly Noodles Special Quality Instant Noodles

Truly the best instant noodles I’ve ever had. I love these – the noodles are flat and very tasty. The seasonings provide a broad range of flavors. Spicy, sweet, full of good flavor. I enjoyed this bowl with some turkey, fried eggs, pickled ginger, fried shallot and Sriracha (Red Rooster) sauce around Thanksgiving. Original Review

#532: Doll Instant Noodle Spicy Tonkotsu Flavour

Thanks to Nathan R. of Vancouver, Canada, I have this wonderful package of noodles that I will be devouring shortly. Was sure I’d had every variety of the Doll line but apparently I haven’t – I think maybe this one just isn’t distributed in the USA.

NOTE: So I got a comment – I had put Tonkatsu instead of Tonkotsu – ” Tonkatsu and tonkotsu are two different Japanese dishes, the former being breaded, fried pork cutlets, similar to German schnitchel, and the latter is a variety of ramen with a broth made from boiled pork bones.” – JP Hays. Thanks for the heads up! Had no clue of the error of that it would make such a difference!

Standard pair of packets – liquid on the left and powder on the right.

Looks good to me. You might notice – I got a new bowl! Actually I bought three new bowls today at a store called Daiso at the mall. Most of the stuff there is $1.50 – including this bowl! Got another $1.50 bowl and a $5.00 one.

Click image to enlarge. That looks great! Added two fried eggs. First, the noodles are very nice, high quality and very tasty. The broth has a nice flavor to it and was perfect. I really like Doll products and this is no exception. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars!

A Doll Brand TV commercial from Hong Kong.

This is pretty awesome – how to make miniature food out of polymer clay.

#414: Doll Instant Noodle Artificial Beef Flavour

So I’ve been quite a fan of Doll’s varieties – they’ve always proven to be quite nice. So here’s their beef variety.

One packet of dry seasoning.

Very deep color to this one – looks like cooked beef.

Click image to enlarge. Tossed in a couple eggs. Wasn’t really expecting what I found with this one. The rpos – a nice amount of noodles which were nice and firm and tasty. The cons? Even with 500mL of water and two eggs, the broth was salty – overly salty. I’m not one who usually finds broth to be salty- but this one sure is.  Giving this one 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

#358: Doll Instant Noodle Spicy Artificial Pork Flavour

Always a big fan of the Doll brand stuff. Spicy pork huh? Awesome – sounds like a part of a wholesome breakfast!

Soup base on the left and the goopy stuff on the right.

Same deal here – soup left, goop right. I found the aroma to be a little extreme… In a negative way…

Click image to enlarge. Added two fried eggs and a little fried shallot. After adding the noodles that funny odor went away and was replaced with an excellent appealing scent. I really liked it – noodles were awesome and abundant, broth was tasty… It was great, although not the best of the pack of Doll products I must say. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

Happy Easter
