Here’s what they had to say about this one – ‘This ramen was first released by New Touch in 1985: It has stuck around so long because it is a delicious twist on the classic shoyu ramen. With extra negi (green onion) and just a touch of spicy (“pirikara in Japanese) this is a simple yet satisfying bowl of noodles.’

Unboxing Time: Hakubaku Shoyu Soy Sauce Ramen

I did a Meet The Manufacturer recently with Hakubaku USA which was a lot of fun and thought hey – it might be fun to do some experimenting with their products and see what I could do with them. Here’s some samples that they were kind enough to send over!

#3176: Hakubaku Shoyu Soy Sauce Flavor Ramen - United States

Got a message from a fellow named Mark recently about a couple new varieties to try. Shortly after, I got a package containing them. Thanks! This is the first of two. Here’s a little about shoyu ramen from Wikibedia –

Shōyu (醤油, “soy sauce”) ramen is the oldest of the four, it has a clear brown broth, based on a chicken and vegetable (or sometimes fish or beef) stock with plenty of soy sauce added resulting in a soup that is tangy, salty, and savory yet still fairly light on the palate. Shōyu ramen usually has curly noodles rather than straight ones, but this is not always the case. It is often adorned with marinated bamboo shoots or menma, green onions, ninjin (carrot), kamaboko (fish cakes), nori (seaweed), boiled eggs, bean sprouts or black pepper; occasionally the soup will also contain chili oil or Chinese spices, and some shops serve sliced beef instead of the usual chāshū.

These packs contain two servings. Let’s check it out!

#3068: Sapporo Ichiban Japanese Style Noodles Soy Sauce Flavor - United States

This is interesting in a couple ways. First off, this variety has been called Original in both the cup and pack versions up til not – in the bowl, however, it’s getting the stamp of Soy Sauce. Not only that, I did see that they also have the Shio version available – not sure about the Miso but I do think I may have seen that. Let’s crack into this one and give it a try!

Lots of vegetables – cabbage, bok choy, corn, carrot, and leek.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added soft egg, chashu pork, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion and togarashi. The noodles were pretty decent – an extra minute made them just right. The broth has a slightly sweet soy sauce flavor. Pretty tasty. The vegetables were great except for the corn which seemed very out of place seeing as this isn’t a miso. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. Today we have a Zenpop.JP variety – so what’s Zenpop? They’re a subscription service for all things Japanese! Definitely, check them out. By the way, use coupon code RAMENRATER to get $2 off! Here’s what they had to say about this one – ‘This is as nice as the name indicates! While the soup is thick and rich, this is also a bit better for you with fewer  calories than the original Nissin Cup Noodles. Is that even possible? You’ll know it once you try this.’

When I opened the Zenpop box, I saw this and was excited – I’ve had it before and really liked it! Wait – that’s not entirely accurate – I had last year’s version. It’s been changed as of this April! I’m guessing it will be a little different. Here’s what I found on the Nissin Japan website –

1. Noodle

Non-fried noodles exclusively for “cup noodle nice” which kneaded plenty of dietary fiber equivalent to about 4 lettuce. I pushed the taste and taste of the noodles further to the cup noodle.

2. Soup

A thick soup which is deeply finished with pork extract added to soy sauce soup which made the peppers unique to cup noodles.

3. Materials

Cabbage, seasoned minced pork, egg, leek, red pepper.

Cool – let’s give it a try!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, shichimi togarashi, and chashu pork. The noodles have an excellent texture which I think is leaps and bounds over the standard Cup Noodle noodle. The broth has a nice shoyu taste and carries a rich and thick character which I find extraordinarily pleasing despite its healthy restrictions. Included seasoned minced pork, egg, and vegetables bounce to life – the pork tastes good as do the vegetables – which have a nice crunch. Really impressed yet again! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4902105246603.

#2910: Nissin Top Ramen Soy Sauce Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Well would you look at that! Top Ramen. An American original. You might be thinking ‘aww that’s Japanese,’ but this stuff is as American as it gets. The flavor is made to appeal to the local market. What bums me out is when I say ‘an American original’ all I can think about is my favorite political show which is no more. My dad used to watch The McLaughlin Group for years and I finally hit an age after he was gone that I checked it out and got hooked on it. I’d torture poor Andy and make him watch it all the time. But Dr. McLaughlin died a couple years ago, and they ended the series long run. I would be curious how it would have been if he would have stayed alive longer – how the show would be these days. Anyways, I’ve gone way off track. So soy sauce is known as Shoyu in Japan. This is a kind of Shoyu ramen. Let’s check i tout!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, spring onion, narutomaki, chashu pork and nanami togarashi. The noodles hydrate as expected. They have a very standard baseline kind of chew – slight plumpness works but just seems a hint less chew than should be. The broth seems much changed from the original Oriental’ flavor. This new recipe definitely has strong notes of mushroom, undoubtedly from replacement of artificial flavors. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 070662010013.

#2995: Nissin Cup Noodles Very Veggie Soy Sauce Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup - United States

When the Very Veggie line came out, my first thought was that it would just be varieties for Vegans and Vegetarians. Surprisingly, there was no option for this crowd. Well, it seems that that has changed! This one was sent to me by Robert Z. from Kentucky – thanks man – go check out his cooking blog www.dadbert.com! He found this at a local grocery store – nothing about this and the other new Cup Noodles he found and sent on their site or mentioned on Instagram. This has led me to think that perhaps he’s in what’s called a ‘test market.’ In some areas, a product will be introduced to meter how it’s received by the public – if it sells really well, it’ll go nationwide. If not, it might be pulled. Let’s pop the lid and look under the hood.

The noodle is pretty much identical to the other Very Veggie variants – thin with a nice chew and taste. The broth was indeed a vegetable shoyu – worked well with the ubiquitous vegetables, which were in absolutely every bite. Edamame and carrot among other vegetables played well with noodle and broth. Excellent. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 070662401040.
