#819: Maruchan Tempura Soba

This is one that came from Courtnay N. of Surrey, BC – thanks! Maruchan makes lots of instant noodles that can be found in the USA, but of course they make varieties that are only available in Japan – this is one of them.

Package back (click image to enlarge).

Noodle block -soba noodles are buckwheat.

The seasoning powder packet.

There was a lot of the powder compared to most.

So this is the tempura packet – a little picture of a prawn or shrimp on the package makes me hope for this to be some good stuff!

Oh yeah they look and smell tasty!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Didn’t add anything to this one. The noodles were pretty good – a nice chew to them and a lovely color. The broth had a sweet and shoyu (soy sauce) flavor to it I liked. The tempura bits? Awesome stuff. All in all, this was really good. The last few Japanese instants I’ve had I’ve been a little disappointed wit. This one was just the opposite. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 490199001084 .

How to make Japanese soba

  1. this is one of my favorite instant noodles. the flavor is actually pretty authentic. the soba noodle was changed a few years back and is not as good as it was. be sure to shake some shichimi on it . the older packages used to have a shichimi packet. this is available occasionally at Uwajimaya. ask for it. i usually find it during the winter months at Uwajimaya.

      1. hello hans,
i actually live in your neck of the woods. i’ve always purchased the Tempura Soba at a Uwajimaya, usually the one in Beaverton Or, or at the downtown Seattle location. it’s prettymuch hit and miss when this Tempura Soba appears on the shelves. i seem to have had best luck finding it closer to new year’s. if you ask, they may be able to let you know if and when they will stock this.
shichimi is a type of japanese togarashi, a red pepper seasoning. not quite like cayenne. shichi means 7. so it’s a 7 blend pepper seasoning. it is not overly red pepper spicy.
i enjoy your blog and enjoy seeing the reviews of all the different brands i see on the shelves.
