#2046: E-Zee Perisa Asam Pedas Mi Segara

This one was sent by CarJEN of Malaysia – thanks! I did a Meet The Manufacturer with them a while back and since then, they’ve sent me products when they come out. I’m pretty sure this has been out for a little while, but today will be my first taste. Asam translates to sour (usually like tamarind) and pedas translates to spicy, hence, sour and spicy. Let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added chilli padi, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander and tau pok. The noodles were quite good for a standard gauge instant and worked just right – a little chewier than many which I liked. The broth indeed had a sour and spicy flavor to it and a kind of tomato/mackerel sauce element like asam laksa. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9557226082828.

#1922: Mie Sedaap Instant Cup Mi Kuah Rasa Baso Spesial

The last of the Mi Sedaap varieties I got quite a while ago at Asian Food Center down on Aurora and 130th. Let’s crack this one open – so few Indonesian varieties cross my desk these days!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles came out nicely – good chew and texture and good quantity. The broth had a kind of gritty beefiness to it, vaguely stew-like. #1564: A-One Mì Ly Instant Noodles Mì Thịt Xào Pork Flavor

Last spring, I remember my son and I took a walk to the local Asian grocery when we were living in Edmonds, WA. We were getting something for my wife for Mother’s Day I believe! Anyways, as always I like to take a stroll down the instant noodle aisle (no big shock, right?). I found a few different varieties of these A-One cups and got them. This is a pork flavored one – from Vietnam. Let’s check out what’s inside!

 Here’s detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add in all sachets and fill to line with boiling water. Cover for 3 minutes and stir. Enjoy!

The noodles did alright – hydrated very nicely and only a slight spongy. The broth had an interesting pork taste; kind of a slight bitterness to it which really wasn’t my cup of tea. If you like it hot, you’re in for a real treat here. These are the spiciest instant noodles you can get that I’ve reviewed from my 1,446 reviews thus far. If you can’t handle spicy foods, these definitely aren’t for you – these are serious! Many of these were so hot, I couldn’t finish the bowl – and I can handle a decent amount of heat! I used to review hot sauces! Anyways, Hope everyone is having a great summer and here are the spiciest instant noodles of all time for 2014!

#10: Nongshim Harmony Korean Spicy Noodle Dish With Chipotle – United States

This unique instant is very new and quite spicy. What’s interesting about is that you can serve it hot or cold, but the spiciness is going to bite you either way! This is the only variety I’ve found featuring chipotle pepper heat. Original review

#9: Mamee Mi Segera SLLRRRP! Perencah Kari Xtra Pedas – Malaysia

The noodles are good – plump with a nice chewiness. The broth is very spicy and hot – not for the faint of heat! It has a good curry flavor to it. If you like spicy curry, check this one out. By the way, Kari Xtra Pedas means extra hot curry if you couldn’t figure that out! Original review

#8: Maggi Extra Spicy Curry Instant Noodles – Singapore

2014_8_4_tts_008Maggi 2 Minute Curry is a nice instant with a little bit of heat, and with the demand for more hotness, they made this new variety. Extra Spicy Curry has a really great flavor to it and a heat that will definitely challenge many. Original review

#7: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle – Malaysia

2014_8_4_tts_007When MyKuali’s White Curry Noodle hit this list last year, there was a bit of a craze for it in Malaysia! People really wanted to give it a try. Not only is it retaining it’s spot this year on the spicy list, but it is the reigning number one on The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2014 list. #6: Indomie Curly Noodle With Chicken & Chilli Paddi – Indonesia

This one’s a lot of fun; kind of like Russian roulette on a plate! You’re eating your noodles and all of a sudden wham! There’s usually a couple of these little chillies in there and they pack an extreme punch. You’ll definitely know it when you find it! Original review

#5: emart Dare You! Habanero Jjamppong – South Korea

Extreme heat is paired with nice bit of seafood broth and lots of bits of seafood. All the fire and flavor melded together with thick ramyun noodles make it hot as well as delicious. This one comes in at 1,960 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). Original review

#4: Paldo Teumsae Ramyun – South Korea

On the list for three years now! Another South Korean ramyun with serious kick to it. This isn’t to be trifled with!  Teumsae has restaurants in South Korea which serve up some seriously spicy fare. I really like the text underneath the word Teumsae which reads, ‘Flavor. Culture. Human’ Original review

#3: Samyang Foods Buldalk Bokkeummyeon – South Korea

I would say that I’ve seen dozens of videos of YouTube showing people competitively eating this one. This stuff is extremely hot. Another brothless variety and it really packs a punch as well as has a nice taste to it. Thick ramyun noodles round everything out nicely and will transmit the spicy sauce to your tongue. #2: Paldo Bulnak Bokkummyun Spicy Fried Octopus Ramyun – South Korea

See that little octopus on the package with the smile on his face? He’s laughing. Laughing as he watches you sweat as you eat this ultra spicy ramyun! I’m not kidding this one was over the top spicy! Bring a fire extinguisher. Original review

For the third year running, this stuff tops the list. See the little guy in the top right? Yeah – it’s not one to underestimate; this is violently hot. The broth just keeps delivering the heat and it’s just insane. Try licking a lit candle – I swear this stuff is hotter! Original review

Hao Way Penang White Curry Noodle Samples From Win Onn Foods Of Malaysia

Right after the 2014 Top Ten List was pudblished, I got contacted by a person from Win Onn Foods in Malaysia. They were keen on me trying their variety of instant Penang white curry noodles, and I liked the idea of trying more iterations of them, so I said please send some. Well, the first time they tried to send me some, I received this box.

That green tape there can be the mark of approval or the mark of doom for samples sent to me from abroad. Unfortunately, it meant doom. Their samples contained a scant amount of chicken – in powder form. The USDA/CBP guys don’t like chicken or beef from Asian countries, even in trace amounts. So, they saw fit to include a note saying they destroyed the samples that had been in this box and leave the posters that win Onn had sent.I then had the sad task of informing the shipper that they’d just spent a lot of money to expedite a practically empty box to me. I’d heard that sometimes if a veterinary certification was included, the USDA/CBP was a bit more receptive,

Yesterday, I received this box in the mail. This one felt a little fuller!

I really liked the ‘customs cleared’ sticker – that was a good sign. There was still the tape from USDA/CBP on the package though. I had been tracking the package and at one point it had a big red ‘clearance delay’ icon next to its status which had me worried.

Meet The Manufacturer: #1362: Mamee Mi Segera Perisa Kari

Today’s the last of the Mamee Double-Decker Meet The Manufacturer. It’s been really neat trying all these varieties – not a single re-review – really shows how few of their products I’d tried previusly. Today I thought I’d go with one of my favorite all time flavors in the world – curry. There are so many different takes on curry in the world – Malaysian, Singaporean, Japanese, South Korean, Indian and British to name a few. Let’s check this one out as we bid a fond farewell to this 15 day journey through some of Mamee’s products.

Smells like rich curry!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added chicken I breaded with a mix of Panko and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning and baked, sweet onion and wonton chips. The noodles are just right – neat gauge and chew. The broth has a very tasty curry flavor without much if any spiciness. This is perfect for the curry lover who doesn’t want their mouth on fire. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 9555022301990.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Indonesian Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 Edition

When I was very young, I first discovered a satay variety of Indonesian mi goreng and loved it. I would go on special trips to Seattle just to get tons of it! The many seasoning sachets, oils, and the exotic flavors – it was great! I have been very fortunate to be able to try many, many more varieties of Indonesia instant noodles. I think what makes them distinctly different from others in the world are the use of sweetness and spiciness. These flavors balance so well in mi goreng. Then there’s flavors like lime, hot chillies and the crunch of fried onion. Reviewing such exotic varieties are what makes being The Ramen Rater so enjoyable! With that, I proudly present The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Indonesian Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 edition!!!!!

#10: Mie Sedaap Mi Goreng Perisa Asli

This one came with quite a few fried onions. Fried onions are wonderful things, especially on mi goreng! The good crunch paired with the sweet and spicy flavors is very good. Original review here

#9: Sarimi Isi 2 Mi Goreng Rasa Ayam Kecap

‘Isi 2’ means ‘for two.’ What I liked about this one was its quantity and balance of heat, sweet soy and a nice chicken flavored sauce. Original review here

#8: Eat & Go Spicy Chicken Mi Instan Cup

This one really took me by surprise. It comes in a small package but has all the accoutrements you would expect in a pack version as well as a fork! The flavor was nice and frisky with the spiciness and it didn’t stop there. Very well done. Original review here

#7: Healtimie Green Barley Noodle Milk Chicken Soup

I’ll be honest – I haven’t had great luck enjoying green noodles in the past! With every rule however, there’s an exception. The slightly wider and flat noodles had a great texture and flavor. The broth was very enjoyable and hearty. Original review here

#6: ABC Selera Pedas Mi Rebus Hot Gulai Chicken Flavour

Curry as well as coconut flavors impressed me here. The noodles had a nice quality and a satisfying texture. A very well-rounded bowl of noodles! Original review here

#5: SuperMi Gobang Goreng Rasa Ayam Bawang

The flavor is great – definitely has an onion chicken flavor and also a lot of sweetness, no doubt from the sweet soy sauce. The chili sauce that came with it also supplies a nice amount of heat. There’s a ton of fried onion to add on top at the end for a nice crunch. Original review here

#4: Indomie Mi Instan Mi Goreng Jumbo

Here it is. How could a top list of Indonesian instants be complete without Indomie Mi Goreng? I went with the Jumbo as you really can’t have too much of a good thing. Good noodles, sweet and spicy – this is great stuff! Original review here

#3: Indomie Mi Goreng Rendang

In a CNN International survey, rendang was voted top. The noodles are chewy enough without being too chewy. The flavor is excellent – like a hot curry beef taste that works so well. I love it. Original review here

#1: Indomie Mi Keriting Goreng Spesial

Of all the questions I’ve received as The Ramen Rater, people have asked where they can get the version of this sold in the USA more than anything else. Unfortunately, it’s not sold here anymore – the folks in Indonesia are quite lucky! The noodles in this one are very nice – flat and a little broader than the others in this list and with an excellent flavor. If on a desert island and only able to pick one variety to have with me, this one would come to mind. Original review here

Well, there you go! Thanks to everyone who has sent samples and donations for me to try from Indonesia! It sure looks like there a many I have yet to sample which makes me quite happy! I can’t get enough of the Indonesian varieties and hope to review more soon.

#1177: Mi ABC Mi Instan Rebus Rasa Ayam Bawang (Onion Chicken Flavour)

Another one sent by my friend in Indonesia – thank you! A little translation. So it’s onion chicken flavor – rasa means flavor, bawang is onion and ayam chicken. Mi instan is instant noodle, but rebus? Rebus translated to boiled and here I think refers to the noodles being ‘cooking noodles.’ As I’ve mentioned in the past, what makes a noodle ‘instant’ is the fact that you can put the noodle block and seasonings in a bowl, add boiling water and then cover for a few minutes, stir and eat. Anyways, let’s check out this Indonesian variant.

Added chicken baked with Lindberg-Snider Porterhouse & Roast Seasoning (I know, but it’s got a lot of sage in it and works great with chicken), red, yellow and orange bell pepper, Walla Walla sweet onion and hard boiled egg. The noodles are pretty average – not amazing buut they’re good. The broth is nice and warming with a touch of spiciness, and a great onion and chicken flavor. The seasoned oil gives it a little oiliness that is perfect. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 8992388111237.

Re-Review: Indomie Curly Noodle With Chicken & Chilli Paddi

This is one that ended up at second place on the Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time – that means its really hot! There are these tiny little peppers (chilli paddi) that are real scorchers and they’re small enough that when you happen to find one, you get quite a jolt! I reviewed this a while back this year – #732 and during the Meet The Manufacturer: Indomie special. This is one of the packs sent directly from Indofood in Indonesia – I am told they will be sending some new samples very soon! Can’t wait to try them!

Noodles are quite good – same style as the #1 from the Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time list. The flavor is nice – the noodles are coated with a slightly spicy but sweet flavor – and those little peppers pop up now and again and blow your head off – exhilarating! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars. How do they make Indomie? Watch and see! I believe this is an African plant but I’m sure its not much different in Indonesia.

#891: Vina Acecook Hao Hao Mushroom Flavour Instant Noodles

More mushroom noodles. They certainly looks nice from the pictures on the package – hao hao about we give ’em a try? Ugh…

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added yellow onions, broccoli, green bell pepper and Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles aren’t too bad – pretty standard Hao Hao kinda stuff. The broth is light and mas a mushroom flavor. This is pretty basic – nothing fancy; if you want something with a mushroom taste, I think this will work for you. I found it kind of lackluster – I really like Vina Acecook’s products usually, but this one was very meh. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 8934563106164 .

Here’s something special! This is the version of the special fried curly noodles that they get in Indonesia! What’s funny is that it looks like the date on the front is today! The special fried curly noodles we get here in the US from Indomie tops my Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time list. Let’s give these a try.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added onion, Fresno chili peppers, kizami shoga (pickled ginger), two fried eggs with Krazy Mixed Up Salt and some Dua Belibis chili sauce. The noodles and broad and flat – deiniftely different than the usual Indomie noodles. The flavor is spicy and sweet and wonderful. This is much like the one we get here, but with a little nicer veggies. Perfect. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. I have heard that they may be getting rid of the Special Curly or the Special Grilled Chicken flavors soon. hope not!
