Here’s another variety I’d not seen which came by way of The Fat Hipster, a guy who has tried some fascinating things on his YouTube channel, and is also part of Section42, a group of moderators for the Ramen Junkies group on Facebook. Check both out – and thanks, bro!

This is the newly minted version of Buldak Jjajang – reintroduced with a green motif. It’s been a while, that’s for sure. I should also say there’s a bit of a problem here. I always do mukbang of these varieties – that means eating the whole thing pretty quick. In the last 30 days, I’ve been walking a minimum of ten miles per day. About half of that time, I’ve been trying to keep my intake at 1200kcal per day. Fitting in mukbang with that strictness is going to be difficult, but I’ll manage. I did that diet – maybe slightly less strict – and lost 160 pounds. Well, I got COVID in 2022, and just ended up slacking off. I saw my doc and he said I’d gained 80 pounds since my lowest. So, I’m back at it. I think the hardest part of doing a mukbang will just be the sheer volume; I usually don’t eat a lot of big meals except for dinner. Also, I don’t eat fast. This adds an extra layer aside from the spiciness.

Jjajang is a sauce with a black bean element which usually is quite nice. Let’s give it a good go.

The noodle block.

A sachet of liquid sauce.

A dry powder sachet.

Loose bits from the bowl.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added fried egg, sesame seed, and spring onion. Noodle had a pretty good texture, but were rather on the dry side. The flavor just didn’t rub me the right way. It just doesn’t work for me to make a jjajangmyeon that’s extra spicy when jjajang is usually what I find to at its best as a savory variety, and not a hot one that drown out the best nuances of the black bean. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars.
