Usually, this is a summer list, coming out late July or early August. No more. Why? A couple of reasons – first, I’ve been busy. The whole diet and exercise thing has kind of taken over my life – which is good and a pain at the same time. I do a LOT of walking – often 15 miles in a day. This takes a lot of time and so there’s that. The other reason is that I’ve heard many ask why this list doesn’t come later in the year when it’s colder.

I figure we’ve had a handful of days already dipping below 32F (0C) and so that’s a good qualifier for being cold. It’s just been hard to find time mainly but no more. Here’s the list in all of it’s glory – with a new #1 and a lot of burning behind it! I want to note that the top couple in this list are really hot and if you’ve never tried spicy stuff, you might want to give some others a try first – they really messed me up! Don’t hurt yourself!

#10: Taihodien Restaurant Supreme Spicy Noodle – Taiwan

Taihodien is a popular restaurant in Taiwan and apparently, they don’t know when to quit when it comes to Sichuan peppercorn. I mean really – this is so full of ’em that it will numb up your brain and buzz you in to next week!  Original review

#9: Paldo Bulnak Bokkummyun Spicy Fried Noodle – South Korea

A spicy one to be sure and flavored with the sauce one would put on baby octopus! A twist on the spicy Korean chicken, this features thick chewy ramyun noodles and broth free form – sweet and spicy all the way. MukbangOriginal review

#8: Paldo Volcano Curry Kkokkomyun – South Korea

Another dry noodle from South Korea by Paldo. This doesn’t feature the curry flavor I would have expected; it’s kind of like it’s own rendition of curry which didn’t honestly make me really think of curry all that much. But it’s spicy – that’s definitely not in question. MukbangOriginal review

#7: Paldo Teumsae Ramen 9,413SHU Version – South Korea

I’ve ben trying to get this one for a very long time and the folks at Paldo finally sent me some – thanks! This one was very tasty and very hot, although I remember the first time I tried it many years ago and it blew my head off. These days it’s not too hot to handle for me, but it’s still plenty hot. #6: Liangchengmei 30S” Hot Bird Noodle – China

Thirty seconds to cook, featuring fresh noodles. This company is coming up with some really unique and delicious varieties which I thoroughly enjoy. This one is very reminiscent of another one on this list with a chicken. MukbangOriginal review

#5: Samyang Foods Buldak Bokkeummyeon – South Korea

While not the spiciest in their lineup, I find this to be the real baseline for the heatwave instant noodles have experienced in the past few years. This is the origination of the Fire Noodle Challenge – and it’s popular. I can get this at the local store even – and that’s really saying something to it’s popularity. MukbangOriginal review

#3: Samyang Foods Buldak Mini – South Korea

The absolutely hottest Samyang Buldak variety yet. In this video I have it wrong – this is almost 2.75x spicy. What I liked about it was that the noodle block was smaller, so doing a mukbang wasn’t such a gut-filling fiesta. Would like to see an extra challenging one though – 20,000 next time! #2: Isoyama Shoji 18禁カレーラーメン (Age 18 Prohibited/Restricted/Only La-Men Curry Taste) – Japan

The only variety I’ve NOT been able to conquer. Fail. Twice. First off, I think these taste awful outside of the violent spiciness; like burnt plastic curry. What’s rough is that this calls for 700ml water which I believe is the top end of any instant I’ve had. Not only that, you’d think that would dilute to the point of almost bland but it most certainly does not. I managed 1/4 to a 1/3 each time of trying this. #1: Culley’s World’s Hottest Ramen – New Zealand

This was hard. The only reason I was able to finish it was because of the size. I think that’s why many people have conquered this one. There are some issues with the directions on this one and I think they could be changed without effecting flavor/heat level. Basically, cook the noodles, drain, add in boiling water and sachets and stir. This was conquering the worm for me. I pounded it and then it pounded me. Eight hours of capsaicin cramping – oh so bad. Felt like an alien was going to pierce its way out of my stomach – no joke. Plus I went through a phase where I was tingling all over, slightly numb, and kind of cold. #1 vs. #2: Comparing Two Ultra Spicy Monsters

Okay so these are both violently hot, but there are a couple big differences that make them very hard for me to pit head to head. The 18 Prohibited is downright huge – it’s a big portion. The Culley’s is quite manageable where size is concerned. So, that raises a couple of questions.

If the 18 Prohibited were the same size of the Culley’s, would I be able to eat it all? Yeah – just like the Culley’s I would have been able to just plow through it. If the Culley’s were the same size as the 18 Prohibited? Oh God no – nobody could. So, I went with the one that seemed hotter to me. Like I said above, the 18 Prohibited has a bit of a psychological game it plays just from the size of the beast, whereas it’s quite possible to finish the Culley’s before the full build of heat has even unleashed.

Another gauge is the pepper used itself. The 18 Prohibited uses Bhut Jolokia and the Culley’s Carolina Reaper. One could simply search Wikipedia for SHU levels of each variety, but that doesn’t fly since the exact quantity of each would need to be taken into account; I could make a little meat pie with Carolina Reaper mash that has a very high SHU, but if I use an eyedrop worth or a half cup is what’s going to decide the heat really.

In the end, I went with the one that ended up having the most effect on me, and that was the Culley’s. I didn’t eat the whole 18 Prohibited, but I’m kind of guessing I would not have been able to keep all of that one down, and definitely couldn’t these days what with my diet and exercise regimen really changing how I can tolerate not only the sheer heat but such a straight carb slam like these.

So yesterday was my birthday, and one of the best I’ve had yet. This one was a little different; usually I’m all about going out somewhere to eat or partying up. I had a couple goals for my birthday. One was to do a mukbang of this one and publish it yesterday – which I was able to do.

The other was to get 20,000 steps on my walking tracker. Well, I ended up at 18,810 – close but no cigar. At least I can go for this pretty much any day. Certainly, my feet were pretty sore at the end of the day – was almost 9 miles worth of steps. Either way, a new record for me since I started tracking that.

Anyways, it was a really great day and I thank everyone for their well-wishes and my family for making it really nice!

But yeah – ghost pepper noodles – and they’re black! Smack dab in the middle of a day where I’m doing a lot of exercise, I slammed a big block of carbs – and it was fun. So in late August 2017, a fellow named Jay from Taiwan told me about a very spicy noodle I should try. I had recently put out the new Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time for 2017 and was definitely keen on trying anything and everything spicy of course to begin the search for newcomers for the 2018 list.

18 Prohibited: The Initial Burn

On September 1st, I gave it a go. My experience with anything spicy in the instant noodle realm hailing from Japan was always one of disappointment. Well, I shouldn’t say disappointment – the dishes usually were very tasty, but the heat level just wasn’t very strong at all. What’s more, the package called for 700ml of water to cook the noodles in – one of the highest amount I’ve ever seen for a single serving of noodles. So, thinking it would be a nice one for clearing my sinuses while I had the flu, I delved into it.

As you can see, it was spicy. Real spicy. I figured ‘hey, maybe this is because I have the flu – maybe I can try it again and it won’t hit me as hard.’ The only problem was that I didn’t have access to another one of these packs easily. a guy named Jonathan from Chicago stepped up to the plate – he had a couple extra and shot one my way.

It sat behind my monitor for a few weeks, awaiting its day of glory. I wanted to do it at the right time in order to give it the full attention it deserved.

Training Day 1

I thought maybe I should ‘train’ for this. My plan was to try three fiery varieties in the three days leading up to Friday the 13th in October 2017. First I saw this one on sale in 99 Ranch Market – JML Spicy Hot Beef from China. It was on the inaugural Top Ten Spicy list and I thought that it would definitely be a good one since it had a lot of broth and really burned me up the first time I’d tried it. Well, I really had no problem with this one.

Training Day 2

Next up on the 11th of October was the original Fire Noodle Challenge – the Samyang Foods Buldak Bokkeummyun. Definitely a spicy sucker – it packs the heat. This one doesn’t have a broth with it (despite the myriad of videos I’ve seen of people preparing it incorrectly) and after scarfing it down in under two minutes, it still packed a serious heat that had the inside of my mouth throbbing.Definitely easier to handle than the first time I’d tried it, for sure.

Training Day 3

Finally, the day before I decided to go with the one I’d put at the top of the 2017 Spiciest list – Samyang Foods’ 2x Spicy Haek Buldak Bokkeummyun. This one is known as the Nuclear Fire Noodle Challenge and it’s certainly not one that I’ve had an easy time with in the past. However, I thought that in addition to eating it fast (I did it in 1 minute, 41 seconds) I would try to do it without reacting to it – no ‘oooh’ or strained facial expressions. The only one I had was when I realized that I hadn’t had anything to drink before the attempt. You see, when I eat a lot of something dry, I almost always get the hiccups – this has happened in quite a few videos and I’ve learned to chug down something beforehand. Well, I forgot. Luckily, I didn’t get the hiccups and was kind of surprised I was able to handle it so easily this time around. In fact, the original fire noodle seemed stronger on the previous day – perhaps my theory of tolerance was working and my dream of conquering the 18 Prohibited would be a reality on the following day.

18 Prohibited: The Rematch

So Friday the 13th came. It was a pretty dark and dreary day with some sun breaks. My daughter Miriam was pretty happy – she had a full belly, had her Yo Gabba Gabba playing; the stage was set and I was ready to go. So I cooked up the 18 Prohibited and set forth to conquer the beast – conquer Shai-hulud (yep – Dune reference). Reading further will bring spoilers so watch the video first.


So I had the bowl of 18 Prohibited in front of me. The noodles were very hot but had sat under a fan for a little bit and so I was hoping they’d cooked down somewhat. Personally, I was kind of hoping their physical temperature would be about room temp because boiling hot edibles just aren’t my thing. My mom can drink practically boiling hot coffee but I didn’t receive that genetic gift.

I felt confident I could do this; I’d trained. I also have experience with spicy stuff for years. In fact, many of you don’t know, but after about 60 reviews between 2002 and 2003 or so, I switched to hot sauce. Saucerater was borne out of necessity. I was on the Atkins Diet back then and it was very restrictive of carbohydrates, something instant noodles are full of but spicy sauces are not.

So, it was time. I took my first bite. Definitely had the taste of fiery peppers – Jonathan informed me that he saw something mentioning the Bhut Jolokia or ‘Ghost Pepper’ and that 18 Prohibited was full of it. I’ve always found that habanero pepper has a kind of funky – almost chemical taste to them. This was no different. I got the initial kick of spiciness and kept going. Bite after bite, the heat climbed. I thought perhaps that if I just keep shoveling this awful stuff into my pie hole that it would level out and then I could chug down the broth and be done with it.

As the noodles became less and less, they seemed to be more broth covered; wetter. I never got so far as to actually slurp the soup. I was conquered. Beaten. I had failed. About three minutes in I threw in the towel (or napkin as it were) and declared it the spiciest instant noodle I’ve ever had. Samyang Foods’ 2x Spicy was just violently spicy stuff, but this took it to a completely new level. My mouth was on fire – and once again, my gut was wrenched in a kind of death struggle. It definitely was not happy. I ran to the kitchen to snag a little chunk of brownie we had and chugged a ton of liquid. Usually, I can hold my own and let the fire finally fizzle out, but this time I did have that urgent need to drink something.

The heat lasted for about 45 minutes and then my lips were just numb for about another 15 minutes. I sent my wife Kit a picture – she said they looked puffy and swollen. This was Friday the 13th and I made the attempt to eat a nightmare.

In the hours afterward, my gut wrenched a bit a couple of times but eventually stopped. As a kind of parting gift from the whole experience, I noticed I had a slightly sore throat about 2 or so hours afterward. I’m writing this post at 6 am on the 14th and I’m sick. Sneezing, watery eyes, loads of snot. My son had a runny nose for the past couple of days so I guess the universe decided it was time for me to get a cold.

Despite being knocked down by a package of noodles from Japan, this was a really fun little journey. Honestly, I never expected something from Japan to be on the spicy list – definitely will be next year. I will again say as I did with the 2x Spicy that I don’t think there will ever be anything spicier than this one but I certainly ended up being wrong the last time I said that. I will say this – the 2x Spicy tastes leaps and bounds better than this one does. This one will get zero stars; it’s just foul and horrific. A perfect one to try leading up to Halloween.

#2109: Oni Hot Pot Tuna With Shallot Flavor Noodle

So far, I’ve tried Oni Hot Pot’s Ghost Pepper, XO Sauce and Seaweed and Pepper varieties. This one is a bit of a departure though – I think the only tun aflavored instant noodles I’ve had in the past were the Skipjack Tuna varieties from Indonesia. Well, let’s check this one out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). NOTE – this pack contains 4 packs. Contains tuna. To prepare, add the noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 5 minutes. Drain. Add in contents of all sachets. Stir and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles were very nice – good chew and quality to them. The flavor was like what it’s called; it has a shallot component which was nice – and then a tuna element which worked too. It seemed kind of Italian to be honest; the oil and shallot along with the tuna went well. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars.

#2014: Oni Hot Pot Ghost Pepper Noodle

Okay so it’s been a while since I’ve gotten anything that’s supposed to be really spicy. Well, This one claims to have ghost pepper in it – that’s the Bhut Jolokia, a pepper that’ll rip your head off and then kick it down the road. This one hails from Oni Hot Pot, a chain of restaurants in Taiwan. Never heard of them before – although I have had Taiwanese hot pot here in the US before. Let’s crack this one open and see what’s inside.

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles are broad and flat with a nice chewiness. I also like the kind of scalloped edge on the noodles; very chic. The flavor is a serious smack of Ghost pepper; it’s about 20 minutes since I had a couple bites and it’s still burning my lips and tongue pretty good. What’s neat is that it tastes good as well, something many that are extremely hot don’t offer; sesame and soy sauce notes come through despite the fiery Ghost pepper blaze. Serious stuff and not for the weak hearted! 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.

#1236: emart Dare You! Habanero Ramyun

On my Top Ten Spicy list, the package version of this is #1. Hottest thing ever – hands down! Well, they also sent me the cup version – let’s see how spicy this sucker’s gonna be!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Can’t read Korean, but pretty sure there is a little beef in this one. To prepare, add soup base sachet and boiling water up to inner line. Cover and after 4 minutes, stir and enjoy.

 Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sweet onion and sauteed beef. The noodles are pretty good for a cup. I found as the meal went on, they seemed to only get better; maybe an extra minute or two during the steeping could be a winner here. The broth is, well, HOT. If you don’t like spicy, run away, screaming and wetting yourself. I’m not kidding! The veggies are really nice in this one as well. Just ridiculously hot. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.
