Big News For Mr & Mrs The Ramen Rater

Today’s a special day for us – five years ago today, we first talked to each other. We were both getting through the murky end of horrible relationships and found each other on an online dating website. She lived to far away – me in northern Washington, she in Northern California. That night we spoke on the phone for a whole 6 hours and all I wanted to do was to talk to her again. It was amazing; we found each other right when we most needed each other. Five years later, I’d like to announce that we’re expecting our first child together! We found out two weeks ago! We’re very excited and can’t wait to start this new adventure. To my wife – I love you and am supremely happy knowing you are in my life everyday. Happy Holidays to all!

Birthday Trip: Instant Noodle Hunting In Canada

Approaching the Canadian border!

A weirdly shaped building; probably full of video cameras pointed at people crossing the border.

A rainy day.

Getting closer!

So they asked us a few questions – who are you, what are you doing, where are you going, for how long etc etc. Then they let us loose in Canada!

I really like tunnels – this one was especially cool as the center lane has little lights.

My sister Sue has come up to Canada before and gotten me noodles in the past. She told me about this place in Richmond… First stop: Price Smart Foods!

Richmond, BC V6X 1B5

This place was amazing – so many varieties I’ve not seen in the USA before – really awesome!

Usually you see picture like this of people holding large fish. Five – count ’em FIVE bags full of instant noodles! Wow!!!

Then we drove through Richmond to Yaohan Centre – a big Asian shopping mall.

This place looks rad!

So I was planning on going to a couple more stores: T&T and Osaka. Well, They’re one and the same so that was easy enough. They have a huge cooked food section in Osaka Supermarket – check out all the kinds of dim sum! I like the Shepherd’s Purse bun ingredients (click image to enlarge).

We both agreed that these actually smelled quite good.

Wow! Frozen turtle!

After all the noodle shopping, we decided to check out the food court. There were a few places – a curry place which smelled awesome, lots of Chinese and then there was Seoul Express. Sweet!

My cute wife Kitten made it such an awesome day!

She got a BBQ beef combo.

I decided to get…

Bibimbap!!! Been wanting to try this for so long and it’s so good. Comes in a stoneware crucible of fire! The food was sizzling for literally five minutes after it was at the table!

French language on everything – proof of being in Canada!

Okay, I’ve discovered something amazing here. The rice at the bottom of the bibimbap is stuck to the bottom. I found that with the spoon from my miso, you could pry it off in nice little pieces. This is like the bacon of the rice world – this is great! Kit told me that her grandmother would cook rice and do the same thing.

With pugs at home demanding attention (they’re telepathic), back to the USA we went.

I ended up with 55 new packs of instant noodles to review – in addition to the 26 that were already in the hamper, that’s 81! Pretty sure I’ll be good on noodles for a while!

#611: Batchelors Super Noodles Low Fat Sweet Thai Chili Flavour

This is the last of the Super Noodles sent by Cindy C. of England. Thanks again!

So today is my wife and I’s second anniversary. No, not a wedding anniversary – we got married in July. This is our two year ‘Click-I-Versary.” You see, we met on an online dating website! Two years ago today she clicked a button on my profile and let me know she liked me. I did the same. The chatted online for a little bit and then called and talked to each other for many hours – the rest is history! I can honestly say I’ve never been happier in my life. Love you, Kitten!

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge)…

The single, shiny packet…

The contents smelled really good!

As I said above, Kit & I were married in July. I made a great batch of hot sauce for wedding souvenirs!

The finished product (click image to enlarge). Added a two-egg omelet with Pup & Kit’s Burning Love hot sauce and a few dashes of Krazy Mixed Up Salt. It’s kind of a bummer; I thought I was saving the best for last but as far as this stuff went, the seasoning’s great odor ended there. The stuff was so bland! Weird. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. The hot sauce filled omelet was good at least. I got a text from Kit on Christmas morning on 2009 asking if I would like to fly down to California to meet for the first time and spend New Year’s with her. Saying yes was the best decision I ever made. You can get the noodles here.

Saucy noodles eh? Wouldn’t kind trying it with some fish fingers!

Classic

#400: Nissin Cup Noodles Seafood Curry Flavour (Hong Kong)

So for the 400th review, I went with one I’ve thought should be interesting – seafood curry. These are Cup Noodles that are not for sale usually in the United States. I’ve found two – Crab Flavour and Seafood Flavour, but this Curry Seafood Flavour came from Canada.

I think the packaging on these reflect a little more pride in the product as well as quality. For example, a Shrimp Flavor Cup Noodles for the US doesn’t have such ornate images or shiny gold on them. Of course, what matters is what’s inside.

Look at that – a ton of stuff is in this one! Usually the ones sold in the US have an eighth as much stuff. Was nice – an immediate curry odor filled the nostrils as only Japanese curry can.

Click image to enlarge. Nothing added. The noodles steeped perfectly. The vegetables and little bits of dehydrated fish came out just perfect, and the broth was very curry. My only complaint was that the curry flavor overwhelmed the seafood taste so that there was really none at the end of the day. I really liked this one though. 4.25 out of 5.0 stars.

#373: Nissin Cup Noodles Chicken Vegetable Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

So here’s one my lady Kit brought me back from California! Cup Noodles Chicken Vegetable time!

Standard lid for these…

No packets – everything’s in the cup.

Click image to enlarge. Here’s the finished product. The noodles were a little funky in this one – kind of tough even though they’d sat is the boiling water for a good five minutes. The veggies never seemed to completely rehydrate… The broth was nice though. All in all, a kind of lackluster Cup Noodles – 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here. UPC bar code 070662030066.

The Ramen Rater – Interview On KWLE 1340AM Anacortes, WA

So this morning, I had an interview on KWLE ‘The Whale’ from Anacortes, Washington! It was a lot of fun and I’d like to thank Glen and everyone at KWLE for doing the interview! Here’s a video of the studio cam and the interview!

#360: Nissin Cup Noodles Hearty Chicken Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Another one from California! Thanks my lovely Kitten! So this should be good I hope! Onward!

Pretty standard here – just remember – don’t microwave the styrofoam!

That’s a lot of seasoning! Didn’t see any veggies though.

Click image to enlarge. Yep – veg-less! So I think a more apt name would be creamy chicken flavor. It’s not bad, although I must admit the noodles didn’t seem to get done enough. I even gave them extra time and they were still a little tough. Not bad, not great. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here. UPC code 070662030233.

Make your own at the Ramen Noodle Museum!

#278: Fortune Udon Mushroom Flavor

So this is the last of the Fortune Udons. Was waiting for the right time to make it for my beloved Kit and right now I’m going to say that she finds it to be absolutely excellent.

Again with the packets with no labelling! How do they know…

Tan powder from the single packet….

Finished product. The broth is mushroomy – not really my favorite thing but it isn’t too funky. I’m actually surprised how much I liked it since I’m not usually any form of a fan of mushroom flavorings – unless they’re fresh mushrooms – like real ones… The noodles were pretty good quality and I liked them. I think my lady would give them 5.0 out of 5.0 but I’m going to give these noodles 3.0 out of 5.0. I guess if you really like mushrooms, this might be right up your alley.

#270: Wu-Mu Dried Noodle With BBQ Pork Flavor Sauce

So today’s a downtime today. My lady Kit’s not feeling well and we decided a couple days ago that we would chill and watch Star Trek movies and eat noodles together. That being said, I needed to find some kind of new noodle thing that she night like. Well, BBQ Pork flavor sounded pretty good to me and I thought she’d dig it too.

Yeah so its enough for 4 people. Pretty cheap at around $3 for all of this.

Here are the veggies! Holy cow they are colorful and ample!

So here’s the BBQ pork sauce – thick and black.

Click image to enlarge. The noodles were very chewy – very very chewy indeed! The veggies were nice and the flavoring was alright; just wish there was a bit more of it. I think the marks went down because of the chewiness of the noodles. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars on this one. Sorry Kit!

Here’s a video of hand pulled noodles in Taiwan!
