#3200: Yum Yum Instant Cup Noodles Tom Yum Chicken Super Flavour - Thailand

All I can think about when I see this one is Super Chicken. That in turn makes me think of Ice Cube. Which in turn reminds me of the days when I would ride on my mountain bike throughout the streets of Anacortes with a big boom box on the back blasting music and smoking cigarettes.

While that’s kind of a unique journey down memory lane, this is a unique one too – chicken tom yum. I’ve never reviewed a chicken tom yum when I think about it. At least I don’t think so. I’d look it up but I’m on a time budget here; it’s just after 5am and I have to get everything all wrapped up pretty quick and I’m going to walk with my daughter in her stroller adorned with blinking lights and a Bluetooth speaker which I can blast loud music in. Same deal, different decade. Let’s check this one out.

#2986: Yum Yum Instant Dried Noodles Pad Kee Mao Flavour - Thailand

Alright here we have a variety that’s been one of my favorites – and it translates to Drunken Noodles! Here’s a little something about it from Wikipedia –

Drunken noodles (or pad kee mao, less frequently pad ki mao or pad kimao /ˌpæd k ˈm/;[1] Thaiผัดขี้เมาRTGSphat khi mao [pʰàt kʰîː māw]Laoຜັດຂີ້ເມົາ) is a stir fried noodle dish very similar to phat si-io, but with a slightly different flavor profile. In Thai, khi mao means drunkard. It is normally made with broad rice noodlessoy saucefish sauce, oyster sauce, garlicmeatseafood,[2] chilifresh black pepper pods and holy basil, which give rise to its distinctive spiciness. “Drunken fried rice” or khao phat khi mao is a similar dish.

Several theories exist on the naming of this dish. One states its origins stem from the use of rice wine in preparing this dish, but no alcohol is added in any of the original Thai recipes. Another supposes that it was devised by someone who came home drunk and made something to eat with available ingredients. Another slight variation describes using what remained in their fridge to cook a side dish for their alcohol drinking. In that vein, a more apt name might be “drunkard’s noodles.”[3]

Sounds good – let’s give it a try!

#2920: Yum Yum Authentic Thai Style Instant Noodles Tom Yum Shrimp Flavour

I’ve been a tom yum fan for a while now, however in my very early days of reviews I wasn’t so much. It was either too spicy or too this, too that… But now I love the stuff. Here’s a little about it from Wikipedia –

Tom yum or tom yam (UK: /ˌtɒm ˈjæm/ or /ˌtɒm ˈjʌm/US: /ˌtɑːm ˈjɑːm/;[2] Thaiต้มยำRTGStom yampronounced [tôm jām] (About this sound listen)) is a type of hot and sour Thai soup,[2] usually cooked with shrimp (prawn).[3] Tom yum has its origin in Thailand. In recent years,[when?] tom yam has been popularised around the world.

The words “tom yam” are derived from two Thai words. Tom refers to the boiling process, while yam refers to a Thai spicy and sour salad. Indeed, tom yum is characterised by its distinct hot and sour flavours, with fragrant spices and herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemongrasskaffir lime leaves, galangallime juice, fish sauce, and crushed chili peppers.

Commercial tom yum paste is made by crushing all the herb ingredients and stir frying in oil. Seasoning and other preservative ingredients are then added. The paste is bottled or packaged and sold around the world. Tom yum flavored with the paste may have different characteristics from that made with fresh herb ingredients. The soup often includes meats such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp.

Sounds good to me – it’s been a little while since I reviewed a tom yum – let’s check it out!

This one was sent to me by YumYum in December of 2017 – thank you! Nothing I like more than getting non-export versions of products. Why? Well, they’re more exotic to begin with. The non export varieties are the ones that can be found on store shelves in the country of origin. It’s not like I can walk down the street and go to a Thai grocery store in Thailand, so this is very helpful for me. Here’s a little about tom yum from Wikipedia –

I’ll be honest – I’m a huge fan of green curry. I’ve loved it for y ears. This one from Yum Yum sounds interesting and I’m definitely curious how it stacks up against other I’ve tried. Here’s a little from Wikipedia about green curry –

Green curry (ThaiแกงเขียวหวานRTGSkaeng khiao wanpronounced [kɛ̄ːŋ kʰǐaw wǎːn], literally sweet green curry) is a Central Thai variety of curry.

Apart from a main protein, traditionally fish, fish balls, or meat, the other ingredients for the dish consist of coconut milk, green curry pastepalm sugar, and fish sauceThai eggplant (aubergine), pea aubergine, or other green or whitish vegetables[4] and even fruit are often included.[3][5][6] The consistency of its sauce varies with the amount of coconut milk used. Green curry paste is traditionally made by pounding in a mortar green chillies, shallots, garlic, galangallemongrasskaffir lime peel, cilantro roots (coriander) and cumin seeds, white peppercornsshrimp paste and salt.[3][7]

Unboxing Time: Samples From Yum Yum Thailand

A little while back, a fellow from Yum Yum of Thailand contacted me. A friend had done a news story on German television about instant noodles (yes, they love instant noodle in Germany, too!) and he gave them my info to see if they’d like to do something with me. After a while, I’m happy to announce I received a really big box of different varieties! So today on Unboxing Time With The Ramen Rater, we’ve got Yum Yum samples.

Unboxing Time: Samples From Yum Yum – Thailand

As I said above – a lot of varieties here. I’ve tried one or two, but that’s about it which is nice. Honestly, you should see my noodle hampers. They’re over flowing currently – by a lot. I do two reviews a day and so usually run through about ten a week – so it’s nice to have some padding! Thanks again to Yum Yum for sending these along! I’m really looking forward to some Thai varieties – it’s been a while!
