#3321: Rooster Chili Chicken Flavour - Canada

I found these at the Real Canadian SuperStore up in Richmond, BC a while back. I’ve been quite surprised how good this very, well, boring packaged range is. It all ges to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, or noodles by it’s wrapper. I’m reviewing this one on Canada Day! Let’s give it a try!

Detail of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, boil noodles in 500ml water for 3 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Finally, stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

A dry sachet of soup base.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added baked chicken, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, chili oil, black sesame seeds, soft egg, fried onion, and spring onion. Noodles are thin and soft and provideo a nice quantity. The broth has a great kind of chili chicken flavor with a very light spiciness. I would have liked it better with less broth to strengthen the flavor. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.   UPC bar code 061483036665.

#3234: No Name Shrimp Flavour Oriental Noodles And Soup Mix - Canada

Another Loblaw’s variety found at the Canadian SuperStore. I like shrimp. Sounds interesting and lacking a name which I enjoy. My wife’s favorite color is yellow. Let us begin.

Detail of the packaging (click to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, boil noodles in 500ml water for 3 minutes. Add in sachet. Finally, stir and enjoy! There is an alternate method on this one which I think sounds interesting so that’s what we’re going to do today – cook noodles in 500ml boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain. Add a pat of butter, sachet contents and stir. Add seafood and vegetables. Enjoy!

#3194: Rooster Hot & Spicy Flavour Noodle Soup - Canada

Made for Loblaw’s Canada, these Rooster varieties have been surprisingly good. In fact, despite having a very plain and generic look to them, they’ve all been really quite good. Will this bowl continue on in this way? Let’s find out!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, soft egg, baked chicken with Neo-Essence pepper salt and NuTek Salt for Life, coriander, Cholula Original hot sauce, and black sesame seeds. Sadly, the noodles just didn’t hydrate enough in the alotted time, leaving them spongy. However the broth was really great. Five minutes would have dome this one much better. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 061483036641.

#3115: Suraj Masala Noodles - Canada

Here’s another one found at The Real Canadian SuperStore up in Richmond, BC. These are made in China for Loblaw’s, a Canadian company that has a huge empire of supermarkets.

Back in the 70’s, William Shatner did some ads for Loblaw’s – don’t know how I happened upon them a few years back, but they’re pretty funny to see. Okay – let’s give this a go!

Definitely smells like masala.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added grilled chicken and spring onion. The noodles were your standard instant with a slightly thinner gauge. Masala flavor was a little muted – definitely not what I was hoping for in an Indian-style masala. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 061483059190.

#3112: Canton Instant Noodles Vegetable Flavour - Bangladesh

I think this is the last of the Canton varieties I found at the Real Canadian Superstore up in Canada a few months back. That’s a neat place – in Richmond, BC – they’ve got all sorts of neat things there! Haven’t been to Canada in a little while. Need to visit again! Let’s check this one out!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, sesame seeds, coriander, and fried tofu puff. The noodles were about what you’d expect in an instant with a slight fluffier texture. The flavor – and it just kills me – movie theater butter flavored microwave popcorn. I’m serious. It’s not bad actually and I found it enjoyable, but that’s definitely what I get out of this one. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 846656017784.

#3076: Rooster Chili Chicken Flavour Noodle Soup - Canada

Here’s one of the many varieties I still have from Rooster, a range made in China for Canada’s Loblaw’s company. Loblaw’s owns The Real Canadian SuperStore, and that’s where I found these. Just think of Walmart, but slightly different and Canadian owned – not American. Let’s check this one out – the others in this range have been surprisingly good despite the very plain look to them.

Noodles were soft and definitely done well after a 3 minute sit in the boiling water. They have a kind of flatness to them and work well with the broth. Flavor of the broth is a kind of chicken and cumin with a tinge of spiciness and a tastiness I quite enjoyed. Bits of corn here and there. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 061483036627.

#2997: Rooster Chili Seafood Flavour Noodle Soup - Canada

Oh – Canada! How you doin’? So we went up to Canada as we usually do about once a month and we’d been seeing the place called ‘The Real Canadian Super Store’ every time but never visited. So it’s part of Loblaw’s, a mega supermarket group in Canada – the have lots of different stores up there under different names like T&T Supermarket, Loblaw’s, – I think London Drug? Anyways, yeah. This store was like a mega Walmart – but the difference is that it’s real and it’s Canadian. Great noodle aisle – lots of things I’ve not seen elsewhere. Let’s give this one a try – it’s made in China for the Canadian company.

Smells spicy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, shrimp, narutomaki, carved squid and red pepper flakes. The noodles were decent – light and fluffy to a degree and very soft on the tooth. The broth has this almost chili cheese kind of thing to it. Lots of cumin. A thought of seafood it in there – kind of like the buttery taste seafood varieties often had. Worked surprisingly well – not bad! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 061483038672.

#2958: Rooster Kimchee Flavour Noodle Soup

Here’s another one we found at the Real Canadian Superstore in Richmond, BC. The last one was found in the more domestic area while this one was found with the more Asian food varieties. They have tons of this Rooster branded stuff in bowls, packs, cups – singles, multi packs and cases. It’s pretty impressive. they did also have a nice selection of other things. Cool store! Let’s check this kimchee variety out!

#1672: Azami Chili Seafood Flavour Noodle Soup

Here’s another one that was sent to me by Justin M. from Winfield, BC up north of here in Canada! I haven’t been a big fan of these Canadian instants thus far, but I keep trying them in hopes one will be really good. Chilli Seafood definitely has a nice ring to it – let’s see if it lives up to its name. Let’s go!

Detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add in sachet to cup and add 280ml boiling water. cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Oddly enough, it smells like a spicy peanut butter.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added kamaboko and narutomaki. The noodles came out alright – a little on the funky side inasfar as they have a kind of strange texture. The broth was surprisingly flavorful – indeed, a little spicy and a seafood-like flavor! The vegetable bits hydrated well too. I guess if you keep trying, you will find something decent! Well, at least somewhat… 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 057197990294.

During the holidays, we watched the Will Ferrell movie ‘Elf’ and he drinks maple syrup at one point. Maple syrup is one of the best things that comes from Canada, and so I thought this Loblaw’s brand President’s Choice 100% Pure Syrup sounded like something to check out.

You might be wondering why I picked this one. Well, I’ve been listening to space disco lately. It’s kind of that 70’s sound of the sci-fi future kind of thing. Here’s a long mix of it – I like it.

#1647: No Name Shrimp Flavour Oriental Noodles And Soup Mix

Back in the day, there used to be a brand that was literally generic; they would have products with a white background and a very stark blocky black text. A can of dog food would simply say dog food. I think they’re long gone, but this is kind of the next best thing to it. No Name is a line by Canadian company Loblaw’s, a grocery store chain. Let’s give No Name a look!

Detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add in sachet and fill to line with boiling water. Steep for 3 minutes, stir, and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet. Notice that it says prawns flavor instead of shrimp flavor as printed on the outside.

Has a shrimp scent to it.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added shrimp, mung bean sprouts and spring onion. The noodles had a kind of funk to them; kind of soggy with a filmy feel. The broth wasn’t bad – on the bland side but I’ve had much worse. It had a nice little sweetness to it I liked. The peas which were pretty common hydrated well. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 060383049812.

#1628: Azami Kimchee Flavour Noodle Soup

Here’s one I got from Justin M. from Winfield, BC up north of here in Canada! Thanks! Let’s see here: the instant noodle cup was invented in Japan. This one is sold in Canada under the name Azami and sold by Loblaw’s, a supermarket chain. It’s manufactured in China. The flavor is of kimchi, which is South Korean. Wow. I’ve got hopes that this will be a good one! Let’s check these Azami noodles.

Detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add in contents of sachet and 280ml boiling water. Re-cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Has a strong kimchi scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added spring onion and mung bean sprouts. The noodles were at the lowest end of the spectrum. The ended up crumbly and almost rubbery with no character or flavor whatsoever. The broth was also wasn’t to my liking; very bland in taste with at least some spiciness but other than that it was akin to spicy water. 0.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 057197990263.
