Today I’m reviewing the third iteration of this variety from Singapore. I really like good prawn flavor and hoping this one blows my mind like Prima Taste’s other varieties. Let’s give it a try!

A liquid stock.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, shichimi togarashi, shrimp, and chicken baked with NuTek Salt for Life. Noodles are thick and chewy – absolute excellence. The broth seems to be about as prawny as can be – a very buttery kind of prawn hit is what I get from it, less so the sweet prawn of the north. Great stuff! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350068066.

#3096: Prima Taste Singapore Black Pepper Crab Flavoured La Mian - Singapore

Here’s something pretty cool – I was contacted by the folks at Prima Taste who said they had a new product. Now their Whole Grain Laksa has been number one on my top ten for 3 years now, so naturally I want to try something new from them. They don’t come out with new stuff often and never had anything I didn’t like.

I’ve had quite a few black pepper crab flavored instant varieties actually – from Singapore and Hong Kong and elsewhere. Curious how this will stack up as I honestly haven’t been a huge fan. Let’s find out!

Add noodle block to pot with 500ml water and cook 6 minutes. Leave the sachets in the first pot during noodle cooking. Take sachets out of pot and remove water. Add sachet contents to the pot as well as 4 tablespoons of water from the pot the noodles cooked in and stir. Drain the noodles and add to the pot with the sachet contents and 4 tablespoons of water mixture. Finally, stir until combined and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, surimi, black sesame seeds, and crispy fried garlic. The noodles came out extremely well – thick, chewy noodles with a round shape. The black pepper crab flavor was very good. The black pepper aspect of it was in the forefront, but it played well with other flavors; a sweetness of crab taste was easily noticed. The spiciness of black pepper was just right. The sauce coats everything evenly and has an excellent richness to it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350067731.

Re-Review: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa Wholegrain La Mian

When it comes to my favorites and the annual The Ramen Rster’s top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time list, I like to take nothing for granted. This one has been number one for the past two years and I’m guess it will be so again this year – but I have to try it first just to make sure. Did they change the recipe? Has my taste changed? It gets a little tougher every year with this list as every year there’s about 400 new varieties I’ve been sampling. Anyways, here we go – let give it another try and see how it stacks up!

Indeed, they seem very artisan – very rustic and hearty. The broth is the stuff of dreams – a nice spiciness, a strong flavor of fish and shrimp and a rich depth from spices. The coconut milk powder gives it a richness and creaminess reminiscent of cooking for hours. 5.0 out of 5.0 hours – just as good as the first time I tried it.   EAN bar code 8886350067854.

Unboxing Time: New Wholegrain Prawn Soup From Prima Taste

Got this package the other day – and I didn’t expect it. Well, I WAS expecting it, however both I and Prima Taste thought that it probably had been seized by customs. The tracking was going great then it hit Oakland, California and then Import Delay. It stuck that way for over a week – and then started moving again! What’s more, they never opened the package. Let’s have a look inside!

Thank you very much to the folks at Prima Taste! Can’t wait to try everything (some tried before, some new to try) and thank you for the birthday gift!

Top Ten List Samples From Prima Taste

Looks like I’ll be doing some interview here in the USA soon! Those are always a lot of fun. I asked Prima Taste over in Singapore if they could send some samples along of the products they have that are in the Top Ten this year – and they did!

2016_6_29_don_002a

These two (click to enlarge) have been on the list a long time in their normal form, but these are the new wholegrain versions. The Laksa was #1 for 2016 and the Curry #5.

The #8 spot was held by this Creamy chicken Juzz’s Mee – seriously awesome stuff! Thanks!

#1953: Prima Taste Singapore Fish Soup La Mian

I’ve been wanting to try this one for a really long time and the folks at Prima Taste were kin enough to send it to me recently! Thank you very much! Pretty sure this has been around just as long as the curry and laksa la mian varieties – been a long wait! As I don’t have any fish really, I’m going to go with a little assortment of seafood – sounds good to me! Let’s dig in!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains fish and chicken. To prepare, add contents of fish stock sachet to 500ml water and bring to a boil. Add in noodle block and simmer for 5 1/2 minutes. Turn heat back up to full and add in the contents of the fish soup spice oil sachet and cook an additional 1/2 minute. Stir and enjoy! I see it also says ‘for a more robust taste, add 2 tsp Chinese cooking wine or 1/2 tsp of whisky.’

The noodle block.

A large fish stoch sachet.

Has a nice fish scent.

A large oil sachet.

Getting a light sesame scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Dodo prawn flavor fish ball, carved squid, shrimp, spring onion and chilli paddi. The noodles are thick and full of chewiness – just perfect as Prima Taste’s noodles usually are. The broth is very good. Sesame oil notes along with a nice seafood flavor abound – not too much and not too little. Classy stuff. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8886350067946.

Here’s the one that’s been on my top ten list for a while now – Prima Taste Laksa La Mian, 185g, (Pack of 12)

#1947: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa Wholegrain La Mian

So Prima Taste has recently come out with wholegrain varieties. It was explained to me that wholegrain noodles can tend to be brittle or crumbly – so to prevent this, Prima has created a superfine powder. Indeed, the curry whole grain la mian was absolutely wonderful stuff! The noodles were perfect and had a kind of rustic, artisan kind of character to them. The point of wholegrain noodles is to promote a healthier alternative to white flour. Not only that, these are not fried noodles. Instant noodles are now starting to attempt to please the consumer with more healthy options. Pretty cool! I’m very curious how this laksa does! Let’s dig in and find out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add the sachet contents to 500ml water and bring to a boil. Add in the noodle block and simmer for 7 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The first of two huge sachets: the laksa paste.

Has an elegant shrimp scent along with other spices.

The second sachet…

A very aromatic quantity of coconut powder.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Dodo fish ball and carved squid. These noodles are just amazing – they have a kind of rustic and artisan kind of heartiness to them. I get asked ‘if you had to pick one and you were going to be banished to a desert island’ – well, these are contenders. The broth is simply mind blowing with a wonderful rich laksa flavor – a nice amount of heat and layers of flavor. This is what it’s all about for me. This is perfection. I like it even better than the original. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350067854.

#1907: Prima Taste Singapore Curry Wholegrain La Mian

Here’s something new from Prima Taste that’s geared a little more towards healthy living – this one has noodles made with special wholegrain flour. Their original version has been on my top ten list for a few years now, and I’m very curious to see how this one is. Seems like a good day for some curry! Let’s crack it open!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains shrimp paste. To prepare, add contents of sachets to 500ml boiling water and stir in. Add in noodle block and cook for 7 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The first of two very large sachets.

Has a nice strong curry scent.

The second large sachet.

A ton of coconut powder!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added coriander, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, Dodo fishballs and tau pok. The noodle block is big and of a great quantity. The noodles are thick and have a very strong backbone and chewiness which is excellent. As for the difference in flavor from the wholegrain flour, it is there and quite nice! Definitely gives a more ‘wholesome’ kind of taste to the noodle. The broth is as always just exceptional stuff – thick and has a rich curry flavor. Beautiful! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350067830.

SG50: Happy Birthday, Singapore!

My wife and I entered a special photo contest today here in town and there were six categories of pictures we could enter. One of them was ‘Happiness Is’ and since I was planning on doing something to celebrate SG50, I thought I’d have some Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian today in honor of SG50 – the 50th anniversary of Singapore! I added fish ball from Singapore, Crab Claw fish cake from Singapore, white onion, mint, tau pok and mung bean sprouts. Singapore Laksa is something that truly makes me happy! Hope everyone in Singapore has a great day!

Re-Review: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian

I heard that the first Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew passed yesterday. He is known as the founding father of Singapore. My condolences to the people of Singapore. Here is a link to his obituary and a link to an interview with him from his earlier days.

When I tried Prima Taste Laksa La Mian, I knew that I’d found something special. I mean, I’d never seen anything like it before – I remember telling a lot of people that it was a real game changer in the instant noodle industry when I had it for the first time in March of 2013, I was absolutely blown away; huge sachets and an enormous noodle block. A whopping 7 minutes to cook as well?  Wow. It was number one on my 2013 top ten list and number two last year. I just found out about a couple new videos Prima Taste has made to prepare them as well – check them out here! Let’s open the package and see what’s inside.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add the two large sachets to 2 cups of boiling water and stir in. Add in the noodle block and lower heat. Cook for 7 minutes and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The laksa paste sachet.

The paste has a very rich scent – very aromatic.

The laksa premix sachet.

Lots of coconut powder give it a sweet scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added fish balls. The noodles are thick and have a great chewiness to them – definitely on the premium end of the stick and very impressive. The broth is a deep and flavorful one, with a richness to it that’s really quite amazing. It’s thick from the coconut powder which gives it a sort of milkiness. The paste had all sorts of things going on – has a great homemade ‘stewed for hours’ kind of feel. It’s a little spicy and a little sweet and must be tried firsthand. Masterfully executed. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 013934067995.

Top Ten 2014 Re-Review: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian

There’s a reason there are three Prima Taste products are on the top ten list – they’re amazing. Two big sachets with serious ingredients and noodles that are so nice and tasty. I’ve really enjoyed the products they’ve made and hope they make lots of more noodle varieties in the future! Let’s give this one an up close and personal look.

First though, what is laksa? I’m sure most folks in the United States have never heard of it – but that should change as it’s so good!  Wikipedia had this to say:

Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup from the Peranakan culture, which is a merger of Chinese and Malay elements found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Short and to the point – and now you know! Let’s continue on.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains crustaceans. To prepare, add the sachet contents to 2 cups of water and mix well. Bring to a boil, add in noodle block and reduce heat. Cook for 7 minutes and enjoy!

The noodle block – round noodles with a wide gauge.

The paste sachet – very large.

Has a strong scent of shrimp and spices.

The dry powder premix sachet.

A light powder – mainly coconut.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added bean sprouts, shrimp, mint, sweet onion and tofu puff. The noodles are nice and chewy with a great gauge and premium feel. The broth is spectacular with a nice heartiness and deep flavor; well-balanced richness and spiciness caress the taste buds lovingly. Wonderful! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 013934067995.
