The broth was a salty chicken and corn kind of flavor which seemed a little off. The vegetables did however hydrate pretty well. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9310155630504.

Here’s one sent by a reader named Jen from Australia – thanks again! So chow mein – very curious how this will translate. Indeed I’ve had chow mein that tastes like yakisoba, chow mein that’s just salty and soy, chow mein that’s very bland. But this one looks like it will be chow mein with a small amount of broth and vegetables which sounds odd. But wait – is it odd? As a matter of fact. Australia has it’s own take on Chinese food – here’s a little about it from wikipedia:

Traditional chow mein is made with egg noodles which are boiled then strained and left to dry.[citation needed] They are then stir fried and finally left to sit at the bottom of the wok and pressed down, this crisps the noodles at the edges and underside. Chow mein is made with either seafood, often just prawns, chicken, beef or barbecued pork. Restaurants will serve a combination chow mein or a single type. Chicken and beef are often softened with a little bicarb of soda. The sauce is made from garlic, rice wine, light stock, MSG, salt and corn flour. Vegetables are usually one green such as bok choy or choy sum plus a little chopped carrot, but also other green vegetables are acceptable. This stir fry is poured onto the noodles. Chow mein is unique as its noodles are both soft in part but also crispy.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion and baked chicken. The noodles are standard gauge and hydrate nicely in three minutes, but nothing super special. As far as the broth, the noodles suck most of it up. The flavor was pretty good; indeed, it didn’t remind me of chow mein really but tasted nice and chickenny. Veggie hydrated alright – the peas were kind of meh. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9310155002141.

As for the ‘Oriental’ aspect, it’s lost on me – reminds me more of flavors from South America lite gallina which is young hen and a little more oily. This works though; the broth is a strong chicken flavor – definitely reminds me of something I would expect from a domestic instant noodle cup made by a non-Japanese company if that makes sense. Here’s another one sent by Jen from Australia – thanks! Although not an Australian brand, the distributor’s sticker mentioed Australian distribution and so here we are. Sounds good – been reviewing quite a few beef ones lately it seems. Let’s check it out!

The broth was really great – a nice sour and spicy taste to it I really enjoyed. The pickled mustard stems however were an element that kind of mussed it all up though – just think that I would have liked it better without the mustard greens. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 6921555509982.

This is one from Australia sent by an Australian named Jen who sent out a big box of noodles a few months back – thank you very much! Mi Goreng – it’s beeh a while! Let’s do this!

Well, pretty much every company has a chicken flavored something – usually a pack or cup, and it usually tends to be one of the first products they introduce to the market. Let’s give this chicken variety a look.

The noodles have an interesting chew – kind of like the have a backbone but with a kind of rigid mushiness; hard to explain but it works pretty well. #2223: KOKA Rice Noodles Fragrant Chicken Pho Ga Flavour

Here’s one that was sent to me from Australian by Jen – thank you very much! It’s pretty rare that I get anything from Australia and her package a while back was a trove of neat stuff! This one’s sold in Australia and elsewhere and made in Singapore by the folks at Tat Hui. Let’s check it out!

The noodles come out well – wide gauge and very soft character. As per usual, I made a few cross cuts with a pair of kitchen scissors to make them more manageable. The broth had a very nice pho taste to it – detectable star anise notes in there and a nice chicken taste. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8888056810000.

This one was sent to me by Jen from Australia – thanks again! Chicken… Pretty standard flavor. It seems that the very first instant noodle any company produces is chicken. Everyone likes chicken! Right? Well, I like chicken. Let’s give it a go!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added chicken baked with NuTek Salt For Life and pepper, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and spring onion. The noodles were drab and ho-hum but they did the job as it were. They are of a thin gauge and although well hydrated, it was like they were fighting being hydrated in the way of slight crumbliness. The broth has a odd herbal tinge to it that I wasn’t entirely happy with in this application. Vegetables disappointing; while corn hydrated very well, peas were chalky and carrot was a bore. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9337944000362.

The noodles are definitely on the gritty as well as mushy side in this one which I found interesting and somewhat odd. Nonetheless, they’re actually not bad in this situation. The broth is fascinating stuff (you know when I use ‘fascinating’ and ‘interesting’ in a review, I’m channeling Mr. Spock) insofar that it is a little spicy, but the spices that are flavoring the rest of it’s profile are very strange – although it tastes good to me. Finally to round it out, the vegetables hydrated well, and the TVP is prevalent and decently chewy. This is a really odd cup of noodles. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9310155001779.
