#2160: Menraku Japanese Yakisoba Umami Sauce

It’s been a long time since I’ve reviewed anything by Menraku. Alwats bowls and always pretty good stuff. This one’s a yakisoba I got while on vacation in California’s Bay Area! Let’s check it out!

Detail of the back od the side and bottom of the package (click to enlarge).

Detail of the lid under the outer wrap (click to enlarge). To prepare, open at tab A and take out sachets. Add in garnish sash sachet contents and boiling water to fill line. Close and let steep for 3 minutes. Open the C tab and drain off water. Add in content of liquid sachet. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The liquid sachet.

Thick with a nice yakisoba scent.

The garnish sachet.

Looks like bits of cabbage.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added pork, garlic, spring onion, enoki mushroom and mayonnaise. The noodles have a good chew and good gauge to them. They picked up the sauce which coated everything and had a very good taste – Worcestershire, salty and sweet and a little bit of a smoky kind of taste. The cabbage hydrated perfect and was large and lots of it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 4902663012955.

If you’re ever down in San Francisco and visit Fisherman’s Wharf, check out Musee Mecanique – it’s super awesome! Lots of old games to play!

#576: Menraku Japanese Tempura “Soba”

Here’s probably the last of the Menraku varieties available, another tempura.

Yep – directions. I like that they are pretty vigilant about not microwaving the Styrofoam…

Single packet of seasoning…

Here’s the noodles awaiting the boil.

A nice little disc of tempura. The first time I had this, which was in the Maruchan Midori no Tanuki, I put it in while it was steeping. This ended up making it soggy and a little nasty.

The finished product (click image to enlarge). So the noodles aren’t too bad – I think they might be infused with buckwheat – and they are. So they kind of crumble as you eat them. The broth is salty and a little miso-like. The tempura has a strong taste of onions and goes very well. I think this one’s worth a $2+ for it. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars!

#543: Menraku Japanese Curry “Udon”

One of my favorite things in all the world of cuisine is curry. Hot curry, curry soup, curry beef, curry chicken, curry vindaloo, curry powder, curry paste, green curry, yellow curry, masaman curry, Indian curry and Japanese curry. This sounded good and I’m starving.

So its powder on the right, but I wonder what this chunky stuff in the veggie packet is all about? Hmm…

Wow, that’s quite a pile of powdered seasoning – and its got a great curry stink to it! Also, look at all that stuff on the right – fried tofu and green onions with a dash of carrot and bonito.

Click image to enlarge. No eggs. Just curry udon. So the noodles are awesome – very wide and thick and chewy! The broth is oozing with curry goodness! The veggies and tofu? Perfect. Yup – I’m really quite happy with this one – 4.75 out of 5.0 stars!

Here’s the commercial!

Really – watch this the guy’s got a ridiculously large camera collection

#521: Menraku Japanese Ramen “Soy Sauce” Authentic Ramen Soup

Here’s another Menraku coming atcha. Been weird the last two days; gotten over 10,000 visits to the blog from people using StumbleUpon and ending up on the ‘Recipes’ page… Pretty cool! Anyways, this looks like an interesting bowl of noodles and should be tasty. Let’s dig in.

Powdered seasoning and veggies in the larger packet and soy sauce concoction on the right.

Here’s the contents of the packets atop the noodle block. Add some boiling water and give it a few minutes…

Click image to enlarge. Added a couple pan-scrambled eggs. Really liked this one – now a favorite! The flavor is nice – salty but clearly soy and tasty. The noodles sucked up a good amount of the flavor and were very good. The vegetables re-hydrated to perfection. I got this at Uwajimaya in Bellevue, Washington. You can find it here online. Excellent! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars!

An advert for all the different flavors!

How It’s Made: Soy Sauce

#511: Menraku Japanese Ramen “Miso” Authentic Ramen Soup

I woke up with a sore throat, runny nose, sore joints and a bit of sneezing. I’m sick. This sucks. I thought maybe some miso would bring me back from the brink. I guess we’ll see how it goes…

On the left we have a big packet of veggies and seasoning powder. On the right, a liquid packet.

So the liquid is a miso paste. Quite an interesting earthy flavor – got some on my finger and tried it straight!

Click image to enlarge. Finished product. Added two fried eggs with a little pepper and Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning on top. Not too bad, however not my favorite of the Menraku varieties I’ve had so far. The miso flavor was a little funky. The noodles were good and the veggies were superior – the corn was actually crunchy and fresh taste! All good for the most part. Just not super awesome. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

#482: Menraku Japanese Ramen “Shio” Authentic Ramen Soup

Got this one at the new Bellevue Uwajimaya. Shio means salt, so I suppose this is salt ramen. Let’s give it a try!

Oil on left and veggie and soup base pouch on right. Pouch is pretty good sized.

Here it is, awaiting the boiling bath and a couple of fried eggs…..

Click image to enlarge. So here we are with the two fried eggs on top. So the noodles are great. The broth was, well, a little salty. But it wasn’t nasty salty; it was used as a flavoring rather than something to dump on fries as we commonly do. I don’t know how else to explain. The veggies were great – corn, seaweed and cabbage. Eggs on top and boo yah. 4.5 out of 5.0 – very good. Find it here.

Menraku!!!!

Slurpees rock hard and ride free.

#460: Menraku Japanese Tempura “Udon”

Got a new ramen container – we moved some stuff around and now I have our wicker laundry hamper for noodle storage! It’s actually quite nice – and also makes it easy to just put my hand in and grab a random ramen to rate. I’m sure I’ll post a picture of it sooner or later. Anyways, today I picked  This one – hoping that it’s good as I’m famished and this just isn’t the day for a bad bowl of noodles.

This being tempura udon, we first see the tempura frisbee on the left. This is what I found in Maruchan’s Midori no Tanuki [green raccoon] bowl noodle. The other packet is the soup seasoning.

The dry seasoning resting on the dry udon block. The tempura sits aside and is added at the end.

Click image to  enlarge. I added two soft yolk fried eggs on this one. This one’s good – really good. First off, the noodles were awesome – usually udon doesn’t end up non-spongy and nice like this when its in a dry block. Second, the broth was very nice – some good soy flavor.  The tempura was great – a little bite of noodles, slurp of soup, bite of tempura dipped in the egg – it all went together like a synchronized ballet. I am very happy with this one – it was perfect. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars!

#390: Menraku Japanese Curry “Soba” Bowl

So we went to the brand new Bellevue Washington Uwajimaya a couple days ago and wow – pretty awesome! Got some nice bowl noodles to try – here’s one!

Packet left is powdered seasoning, right is vegetables and tofu.

I think that looks like it’s going to be really good! The curry smells awesome!

Click image to enlarge. Added two fried eggs. Wow – this is great! Kind of tastes like Golden Curry – the stuff you get in the little boxes? The broth is tasty as can be The noodles were a slightly weaker than I expected but not too bad. But the veggies and tofu were excellent – very nice! Giving this 4.0 out of 5.0 stars!

Curry soba in Tokyo – that stuff looks amazingly tasty!
