#1512: Chewy Japanese Fried Ramen Noodles Kyoto Barbecue Sauce Flavour

I figured since I have some cabbage I need to use before it goes bad, yakisoba would be a good call for today. This is one of those interesting ones. The product is from a Hong Kong company called Chewy, made in South Korea, and a Japanese flavor. Yakisoba is great stuff – vegetables and meats fried with noodles and oil and some flavoring. Time to have some breakfast – let’s check out this one from Chewy.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, heat a tablespoon of oil and add a block of noodles. cook for 30 seconds, breaking up with chopsticks. Add 2 tablespoons of water. Add contents of one sachet and stir, add in some meat and veggies. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Enjoy!

Kind of a paste.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added cabbage, green onion, kizami shoga (pickled ginger), Kewpie mayonnaise, mung bean sprouts, shrimp and sweet onion. The noodles are a little mushier than I would have expected; they also were slow to break up during the cooking process. The flavor is a nice sweet barbecue kind of taste – mind you, we’re not talking Sweet Baby Ray’s kind of barbecue flavor of course. It was a little acrid for my taste, and seemed just a little too processed. Sadly disappopinted. 1.75 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 652283001245.

#1415: Chewy Instant Rice Vermicelli Original Flavour

I’ll admit, I have a problem. I have a TON of noodles waiting to be reviewed. Today, I went and put them all on the floor as sorted them by expiration date. No small task, that’s for sure! It took a little while, but everything’s all sorted out and ready to go in the most efficient way I can figure. Today I’m going to review this Chewy variety from Hong Kong. I got it up in Canada a while back – let’s have a look.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. So this is one of those times when I get a little peeved at a noodle company. Why? Here are the directions: add some boiling water to a bowl to warm it up. Get rid of the water. Add noodles and seasonings into the bowl. Fill bowl with boiling water and cover for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy. Fill the bowl with water is a really odd amount of water. What size bowl are we using? My guess is 400ml of boiling water; that’s a pretty safe amount to use usually, but I could be wrong. Kind of hard to tell when they say ‘bowl.’ Anyways… I implore instant noodle manufacturers all around the world to please state the exact amount of water to add to your noodles – whether in a pillow pack like this one or in bowls or cups. It’d really help me out. Thank you!

Finished (click image to enlarge). The rice vermicelli are so ultra-fine, they make angel hair look like udon. This is the kind of noodle I’m not a huge fan of. The texture is a slightly gritty and with a kind of dry finish. They remind me of cobwebs. The broth’s flavor is interesting. A lot of the flavor is overridden by the garlic oil. The other flavor is a kind of sweet, salty and meaty kind of thing. It’s not a bad flavor – maybe with a different noodle though. 0.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 652283000101.

#1412: Chewy Non-Fried Ramen Noodles Taiwan Roast Pork Flavour

Here”s another one from a birthday trip to Canada. This one isn’t fried and really low fat. But will it be low on flavor? It seems that many companies are now offering options for those interested in low fat instant noodles. Let’s see how this one comes out.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 500ml boiling water and cook 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Put in bowl and add contents of sachets and stir. Enjoy!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Sauteed sweet onion, Chinese long bean, tofu puff and thinly sliced pork with some garlic salt and black pepper. The noodles are thick – very much like Taiwanese-made mandarin or hakka gauged noodles. They’re broad and indeed chewy. The broth is quite nice – not too strong, not too weak. It has a spiced pork kind of thing going on I like – peppery stuff. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 652283001092.

#1269: Chewy Rice Vermicelli Scallop With XO Sauce Flavour

Thought Andy might like this one with some shrimp in it perhaps. Told him if it’s spicy and doesn’t like it he can have something different. I guess we’ll see! Let’s check it out.

The back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp, scallop and fish. To prepare, put everything in a bowl. Add 450cc water and cover for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy.

Andy liked it at first, but he started to feel the heat and kind of gave up after eating half – a valiant effort, nonetheless! He walked with me on a very long walk today – at least 3 miles in all. Good job, Andy!

#1163: Chewy Rice Vermicelli Spicy Beef With Chilli Flavour

Another one from my birthday trip to Canada in March – thanks, Kit! Hot and spicy sounded like something I could go for today. Let’s see how this spicy rice vermicelli comes out – I must admit I don’t see spicy rice vermicelli variants ofter.

I get a chilli oil scent with a hint of meat.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added beef seasoned with Lindberg-Snider Porterhouse & Roast Seasoning, Fresno peppers, green onions and Walla Walla sweet onions. The Noodles are very thin and wispy. A lot of them, but not a strong sense of being ‘filling.’ The broth is interesting; it has a nice chilli oil aspect and good richness. #1043: Chewy Rice Vermicelli Satay Chicken Flavour

Yep – another one from my Canadian birthday trip! Let’s check this one out.

Has a lighthearted, high pitched scent – like a chicken and sage smell.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a fried egg, red, yellow and orange bell pepper, sweet onion, chicken I seasoned with garlic salt and baked and some broccoli. The noodles are kind of uninteresting; they’re very thin and wispy and don’t seem to have a lot of character to them. The broth has a deep and rich chicken flavor and another flavor I can’t quite put my finger on… Like an oily chicken skin grease thing going on. The veggies did alright. This was a peculiar one. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 6920377218317.

#840: Chewy Stir Rice Vermicelli Singaporean Laksa Flavour

Here’s one that my sister brought me back from a trip to Canada earlier this year. So to recap, bought in Canada, Singaporean flavored, made in China – capiche?

Finished. Added broccoli, red bell pepper, roast beef with some Dua Belibis chili sauce, hard boiled egg with Krazy Mixed Up Salt and some Kizami Shoga (pickled ginger). This rice noodles – kind of dry. The flavor is really nice though – a light and sweet coconut flavor permeates and ensconces. The little bits of veggies are a plus and add a nice herb layer tot the flavor. I liked this one – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 652283002839 .

#693: Chewy Stir Rice Vermicelli Indonesian Gado-Gado Flavour

Here’s another one my sister brought me back from Canada! This one piqued my interest – gado-gado? Wikipedia says:

Gado-gado (in Indonesian or Betawi language), also called Lotek (in Sundanese) for its cooked version – differed from lotek atah or karedok for its fresh and raw version of the vegetable covered with peanut sauce and pecel (Javanese language) is an Indonesian dish comprising a vegetable salad served with a peanut sauce dressing.[1] It is thought to have originally been a Sundanese dish. It is widely served from hawkers carts, stalls (warung) as well as in restaurants and hotel both in Indonesia and worldwide.

Gado-gado is part of a wide range of Indonesian dressing & salad combinations, along with lotek, pecel and karedok. In many places, to retain authenticity in both the production and flavor, the peanut sauce is made in individual batches, in front of the customers. However, since the dish has gained popularity (because of the increase of Asian-themed restaurants) Gado-gado sauce is now mostly made ahead of time and cooked in bulk, although this is probably more common in Western restaurants rather than in Indonesia. Compared to Western and Indonesian salads, Gado-gado has much more sauce in it. Instead of being used as a light dressing, the vegetables should be well coated in the sauce.

With that being understood, it sounds almost slightly like a pad thai variation when mixed with noodles. Well, we’ll see!

Well, the noodles aren’t bad – they don’t clump too badly for rice noodles. The flavor? Very bland. The peanut sauce is a slight hint and unfortunately the veggies weren’t great either. Had high hopes for this one but uh-uh. 2.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 652283002846 .
