A liquid stock.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion, shichimi togarashi, shrimp, and chicken baked with NuTek Salt for Life. Noodles are thick and chewy – absolute excellence. The broth seems to be about as prawny as can be – a very buttery kind of prawn hit is what I get from it, less so the sweet prawn of the north. Great stuff! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8886350068066.

Hey look – Top Ramen got a facelift! They’ve been changing recipes all over their ranges – getting rid of artificial flavoring and MSG. They’ve also been changing names. This used to be picante beef. To be honest, I haven’t had the first variety in years and it’s nice to be able to have it again fresh. Let’s give it a look!

#2508: Nissin Cup Noodles Chicken Vegetable Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup (New Recipe) - United States - The Ramen Rater - instant noodles

I think this is the last of the new versions of the Cup Noodles from the USA. They changed the recipe last year to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Cup Noodles. Here’s a little from Wikipedia about the history of Cup Noodles –

1970s

In 1970, Nissin formed the subsidiary Nissin Foods (USA) Co. Inc, to sell instant noodles in the United States. Nissin recognized that the bowls traditionally used to package instant noodles in Asia were not common in the U.S, so they used the paper cup designed by Ron R. Matteson. In 1971, they introduced instant ramen packaged in a foam cup. In 1978, Nissin Foods offers new varieties of Top Ramen and Cup O’ Noodles. The product was known as Cup O’ Noodles in the United States until 1993.[citation needed]

1990s

In 1998, Cup Noodles Hot Sauce Varieties introduced (Beef, Chicken, Pork and Shrimp).[1]

Today

Today, instant noodles in Japan are often sold in foam bowls, sometimes with plastic utensils. Foam bowls are inexpensive, disposable, light, and easy to hold, since they insulate heat well. In 2016 the US version was changed, reducing sodium and removing MSG and artificial flavors.

Okay – let’s give it a try!

Some of the loose seasoning and garnish from the cup.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added baked chicken and spring onion. The noodles hydrated well enough – they have a slight crumble to them. The broth doesn’t exactly scream chicken to me; more vegetable. The included bits of vegetable hydrated nicely and were of decent quality. 2.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 070662030066.

Okay so here’s another one of the new recipe Cup Noodles from Nissin Foods USA – thanks again for sending ’em over! I did a kind of experiment a while back – one that ended pretty well. See, on Instagram I often see people enjoying their instant noodles alongside a beer as well as some form of Chee-Tos, whether they be regular, Flamin’ Hot or Flamin’ Hot Limon. What’s kind of funny about it is that it sort of makes sense. See, Chee-Tos kind of have the same effect on instant noodles as tempura. Weird but true – they’re crunchy but also work well in broth. It’s alright if you think I’m crazy, but I do find this somewhat poetic. Let’s check it out.

Well, this is it. Right now, I’m listening to the inauguration of Donald J. Trump. It’s January 20th, 2017 and kind of a weird day. I thought it would be fitting to review something from the United States today. Finally, after decades of sticking with the same recipe, Nissin has decided to go with something new. On Cup Noodles’ 45th anniversary here in the USA, they’ve changed it to make it healthier. Some changes are no added MSG and no artificial flavors. Furthermore they’ve lowered the amount of sodium in these cups from the previous versions using potassium chloride.  So, let’s give this Hot & Spicy Shrimp a try!

Some of the loose ingredients. In spite of being a shrimp variety, I couldn’t find any shrimp. Perhaps they are hiding out in the noodle block.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, shrimp and Cholula Original hot sauce. The noodles are of the standard Cup Noodles gauge and softness that are found in the domestic United States varieties. A good quantity as well. The broth had a hint of spiciness and a shrimp taste. What was a letdown here was that there were no shrimp. Zero. Zilch. Nada. I’m guessing maybe they just missed this cup or they don’t put the little shrimp in these. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. #2239: Nissin Cup Noodles Chicken Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup (New Recipe)

After a few decades, Nissin decided they wanted to make some changes to one of their flagship products here in the United States, Cup Noodles. They’ve lowered sodium and now there is no added MSG and no artificial flavors. I thought this was kind of interesting as last year they came out with these new cups, but it looks like they’re not available anymore. Let’s have a look at this iconic domestic instant noodle in a cup.

Some of the loose seasoning and vegetables.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, kizami shoga, spring onion, hard boiled egg, shichimi togarashi and chicken cooked sous vide style at 147°F for 135 minutes with Johnny’s Chicken & Pork seasoning. The noodles hydrated well and there were a lot of them. The broth was salty and chicken flavored – pretty good. The included vegetable bits hydrated perfectly and were of good quality. I tried these and the old version back to back recently. I found the new recipe’s noodle had a little less chewiness to them compared to the old recipe. I also noticed the flavor of the broth seemed to concentrate more on a mushroom base rather than chicken. When I sampled the noodles today without something to compare them to, I didn’t feel any of these things; they just tasted like a regular chicken Cup Noodles. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 070662030035.
