#2522: Takamori Hearty Japanese Style Curry Udon

#2522: Takamori Hearty Japanese Style Curry Udon - Japan - The Ramen Rater - instant noodles

I gota ride to 99 Ranch yesterday from my sister – thanks! So I was looking for mung bean sprouts, however I found this one when we went through the store. I did a Meet The Manufacturer with Takamori Kosan a few years back and really been hoping I’d get another chance to try some more of their products. Well, this is one of them! Here’s a little about udon from Wikipedia –

Udon (饂飩?, usually written as うどん) is a type of thick wheat flour noodle of Japanese cuisine. Udon is often served hot as a noodle soup in its simplest form, as kake udon, in a mildly flavoured broth called kakejiru, which is made of dashi, soy sauce, and mirin. It is usually topped with thinly chopped scallions. Other common toppings include tempura, often prawn or kakiage (a type of mixed tempura fritter), or aburaage, a type of deep-fried tofu pockets seasoned with sugar, mirin, and soy sauce. A thin slice of kamaboko, a halfmoon-shaped fish cake, is often an add on.

The flavor of broth and topping vary from region to region. Usually, dark brown broth, made from dark soy sauce (koikuchi shōyu), is used in eastern Japan, and light brown broth, made from light soy sauce (usukuchi shōyu), is used in western Japan. This is even noticeable in packaged instant noodles, which are often sold in two different versions for east and west.

I think I’m going to let my son Andy give these a try today. Let’s check it out!

Smells like a nice curry.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added yaki kamaboko. The udon’s perfect – great gauge and chew. The broth is more like a gravy or sauce. It’s a rich, mild curry full of flavor. I you like that House Golden Curry, you will totally love this. I do. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 4901959100826.

#1127: Campbell’s Hearty Noodles Chicken Flavour

Here’s another one from T&T Supermarket up in Canada! To be honest, I was absolutely stoked to find this one; I’ve seen pics of the Campbell’s varieties in the past, but they’re not available in the United States as far as I know. Let’s check out this little chicken cup.

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Contains chicken.

Here is the lid with instructions (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block.

Some bits of veggies and a nice chicken scent. This was at the bottom of the cup – no packets.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added chicken lunch meat, broccoli, red bell pepper and Walla Walla sweet onion. The noodles are surprisingly chewy – almost overly so, with a crumble that’s a little funky. The broth is very nice though – nice chicken flavor, and the veggies hydrated well. 1.75 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 0632111767797.

Re-Review: Nissin Spoon it Rich & Hearty Beef Stew Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Here’s another one from the already reviewed box. Thought it’d be a good one for today as it’s quite cold outside. You can check out the original review here.

Finished (click to enlarge). I added a can of mixed veggies, some Krazy Mixed Up Salt, Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake and a little Texas Pete hot sauce. The noodles are good – like egg noodles but from wheat flour. I found that the beef flavor was good, but missing something this time around. Pretty good – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. Here’s one of my favorite Japanese tunes – ‘Flower of Carnage’ by Meiko Kaji. Here’s the translation:

Begrieving snow falls in the dead morning
Stray dog’s howls and the footsteops of Geta pierce the air
I walk with the weight of the Milky Way on my shoulders
But an umbrella that holds onto the darkness is all there is.
I’m a woman who walks at the brink of life and death
Who’s emptied my tears many moons ago.
All the compassion tears and dreams
The snowy nights and tomorrow hold no meaning
I’ve immersed my body in the river of venegance
And thrown away my womanhood many moons ago
On the behalf of heaven, they’re our soldiers, the loyal, invincible and brave.
Now it’s time for them to leave the country of their
Parents their hearts buoyed by encouraging voices.
They are solemnly resolved not to return alive, without victory.
Here at home, the citizens wait for you.
In foreign lands, the brave troops
Instead of kindness from someone
I do not care about
I rather prefer selifshness from you my beloved.
Oh, it the world a dream or an illusion?
I am all alone in jail.

#711: Nongshim Hearty Beef Rice Noodle Soup

I thought today I’d review this one, sent to me by the nice folks at Ramen Place – thanks! Was thinking it would go nicely with some of the stir fry veggies I’ve been enjoying lately. I also talked with Ray from Nongshim today – found out a little bit of information that you might find interesting if you didn’t know. Nongshim’s logo is a seed, and Nongshim translates to ‘Farmer’s Heart.’ I like that – and we’ll see how I like these noodles now!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Hey – what’s that? A sweepstakes mention on the left side?

Aww I missed the deadline! Click image to enlarge.

Here’s the noodles all ready to go.

Here’s the dry soup base packet.

I took a little taste – mmm garlicky!

Here’s the veggie packet.

…and the veggies – quite a nice amount of them too!

Decided to open up a bottle of my homemade hot sauce. It’s just over a year old and there aren’t many left! Made it for our wedding! Fresno peppers, cilantro, garlic, tomatillo, xanthan gum and vinegar.

Finished (click image to enlarge). I added a two egg omelet with a little bit of shredded cheese, some of my hot sauce, oregano and Krazy Mixed Up Salt on top. I added some store brand stir fry veggies and a little Ajishima Kim Chi furikake to the noodles. Starting with the noodles: these are now my favorite rice noodles now. They’re not overly chewy and have a nice consistency that I’ve not found in rice noodles before; they’re usually drier and chewier. I do like broad rice noodles too, but these are very nice for their gauge. The broth was nice – a creamy color and a nice taste of beef. The veggies were good too – re-hydrated nicely. I liked this one a lot! 4.25 out of 5.0 stars – a pleasant surprise! UPC barcode 031146012190 – get it here.

#703: Meet The Manufacturer – Nissin Spoon it Rich & Hearty Beef Stew Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Here’s another of the new Spoon it line of noodle soups from Nissin! Beef stew sounds tasty…

Here’s the back and side panels (click image to enlarge).

Three bags of noodles.

Three pouches of seasoning.

Has a nice, beefish tint, eh?

Finished (click image to enlarge). I added some store brand stir-fry veggies. The noodles are nice – again like egg noodles. The sauce/broth is nice and thick and has a rich beef flavor to it. This is good stuff – I could easily see it accompanying some green beans and a little cut of beef. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 070662071021 .

SPOON!!!

Could you imagine using these spoons to eat things?

#681: Nongshim Hearty Rice Noodle Black Bean & Vegetables

This is one that’s been in the ramen hamper for a while and so it’s time to give it a go. I’m usually a little leery of the noodles with the thick black coating, but I’m throwing caution to the wind; I liked the last Jjajangmen I had so why not!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge).

Had a different Nongshim variety a long time ago that used these noodles. They’re like long rice micro-macaroni! I think the idea is you get the wider gauged noodle without the chewiness you would get if they weren’t hollow.

A packet of veggies…

A nice melange of color and variety. What you do is boil the noodles with the veggies (and add any you might want – I added some C&W frozen Stir Fry Vegetables) and afterwards…

This packet will enter the big pot of drained noodles.

Here’s what it looks like.

Also a packet of vegetable oil. Stir, Stir, stir!

Click image to enlarge. Well this looks shmancy! The noodles are nice – they don’t seem like your typical rice noodles at all; chewy but not overly so. The black bean veggie sauce is good, although I found myself adding a little salt. The veggies were all good. Not bad at all and was filling. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars! UPC barcode 031146007400. Get it here.

Neato! Is this a store in the US or Korea?

#360: Nissin Cup Noodles Hearty Chicken Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Another one from California! Thanks my lovely Kitten! So this should be good I hope! Onward!

Pretty standard here – just remember – don’t microwave the styrofoam!

That’s a lot of seasoning! Didn’t see any veggies though.

Click image to enlarge. Yep – veg-less! So I think a more apt name would be creamy chicken flavor. It’s not bad, although I must admit the noodles didn’t seem to get done enough. I even gave them extra time and they were still a little tough. Not bad, not great. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here. UPC code 070662030233.

#298: Nongshim Hearty Rice Noodle Soup Spicy Veggie Consommé

So here’s something a little different! Healthy and consomme usually aren’t words I see one packages of instant noodles!

Look at that! Clockwise from top – soup base, sea tangle and vegetables. Sea tangle! It add that wonderful ‘of the sea’ taste!

So inside the package is a tray with the noodles. There are the packet contents and sea tangle on top. Note the nice looking veggies!

Yeah – definitely something I’ve not seen before. Oh wait; isn’t this like macaroni but rice and thinner?

Click image to enlarge. Here’s the finished product. So the noodles are very chewy. I don’t like them much at all. Broth is nice and has some depth to it. Sea tangle is great as are the veggies. Altogether, I can’t get behind it because the noodles just don’t do it for me. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. Unique and different yes, but not my kinda thing. Surprised to be able to find at least the beef version here.

#138: Unif-100 Furong Shrimp Flavor Instant Noodles

Some shrimp ramen – looked interesting and furong sounded weird so why not.

Veggies and oil and powder – a lot of powder!

Lookit all that powder!

Click image to enlarge. An enjoyable bowl, although I don’t really think shrimp was a flavor I detected. Some of the veggies ended up crunchy. I wonder if this may have been any better if the oil sachet was absent. I’ve noticed the oil seems a little funky to my taste buds with these Unif 100’s so maybe I’ll try it sans oil next time.

Well, I’m giving it a 3.0 out of 5.0 – overall a good bowl of noodles. Noodles were hearty, veggies crisped once in a while and broth was decent.
