Unboxing Time: MyKuali Sends New Recipe Samples

Unboxing Time: MyKuali Sends New Recipe Samples

Sometimes a package will get routed through Anchorage, AK and this can prove a bit harrowing for it and it’s contents. Luckily, despite one side being completely ripped open, it made it through not only the rough treatment but a call from the customs folks asking what was inside…

Unboxing Time: MyKuali Sends New Recipe Samples – Malaysia

It was odd that they asked; I mean, all the paperwork was with the package. Getting samples for foreign countries can be kind of touch and go from time to time. It always seems like stuff that ends up in Alaska on it’s way to here results in a phone call. Weird. Thank you to MyKuali for sending these new recipe varieties – very keen on trying and letting everyone know what I think of them!

#2679: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle - Malaysia - The Ramen Rater - instant noodles

This is the MyKuasli Penang White Curry Noodle variety that comes from Singapore – rather it’s made for Singapore. I don’t believe it’s different except for the packaging, but to be honest, any chance UI have to review another MyKuali pack is worth it to me to do so. It’s just a no-brainer; I love their stuff. So let’s have a look.

#2392: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Rice Vermicelli Soup

#2393: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Rice Vermicelli Soup - Malaysia - The Ramen Rater - rice vermicelli

Hey awesome! So I’ve been trying to get my hands on the full range of MyKuali rice vermicelli bowls for a while now. Indeed, they are only sold in Southeast Asia which can make it difficult. However, the kind folks at MyKuali sent me quite a few of their newer varieties and so I’ve got them all including a couple others! So today, it’s Penang Red Tom Yum goong. So, what does this mean? Wikipedia, if you please:

Tom yum, rtgstom yam, Thai: ต้มยำ,  [tôm.jām]) is a Thai soup, usually cooked with shrimp.[2] Tom yum is widely served in neighbouring countries such as Cambodia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Laos and has been popularised around the world.

The words “tom yam” are derived from two Thai words. “Tom” refers to the boiling process, while “yam” refers to a Thai spicy and sour salad. Indeed, tom yum is characterised by its distinct hot and sour flavours, with fragrant spices and herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and crush chili peppers.

Commercial tom yum paste is made by crushing all the herb ingredients and stir frying in oil. Seasoning and other preservative ingredients are then added. Next the paste is bottled or packaged and sold around the world. Tom yum flavored with the paste may have different characteristics from that made with fresh herb ingredients. The soup often includes meats such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp.

Tom yum goong (Thai: ต้มยำกุ้ง) or tom yam kung, the version of the dish most popular among tourists, is made with prawns as the main ingredient.[7] The dish originated during the Rattanakosin Kingdom.[8]

Well that sums it up to a degree. So tom yum in Thailand often tends to be on the thinner side while in Malaysia they like their broths thick. Furthermore, the cousin of this one won The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition! So let’s check out this Penang Red Tom Yum Goong!

Chives and chilli pepper.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added fish ball, coriander, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, chilli flake and fried onion. The vermicelli came out nice – not too chewy and very plentiful. I used a pair of kitchen scissors to make 3 cross cuts in order to make them more manageable with a fork. The broth is a sea of flavor. So it has a strong lemongrass presence coupled with a serious spiciness. The shrimp taste is strong here and the broth is thick – really thick. The included garnish was excellent and hydrated perfectly. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555655005357.

Wow check this out! This is one I’ve reviewed many times before but this is a new version that comes in a little box! Thank you to MyKuali for sending this along! Indeed, their Penang White Curry was #1 on my annual top ten list is 2014, and it’s appeared on top ten lists since then. It’s amazing stuff; very strong flavors and aroma. When I visited Malaysia in 2014, I got to get a real sense of the foods there. In fact, I got to try many, many varieties of their cuisine! I tried lots of seafood of which I really liked the sunfish.

Also, there was the dim sum. You haven’t tasted din sum correctly until you visit Asia – that’s a fact. The amazing thing about Penang is that there are so many different kinds of food to try and they’re are so many people making it and selling it. Street food (known as hawker food) is brought to the ultimate level there – so much competition brings the best of the best out. This White Curry is a cornerstone of Malaysian cuisine, Penang in particular. A milky broth with a paste that makes it not only tasty but pretty spectacular to look at. Let’s check out this Japanese version box and give it a try!

#2091: MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle Authentic Taste

The third and final of the cups I received from MyKuali – thanks again! The Hokkien Prawn (aka Spicy Prawn Noodle) was #2 on this year’s The Ramen Rater’s top Ten Instant Noodles Of all Time 2016 Edition. I recently read a little about these cups – the noodle they are using is referred to as ‘shabu noodle.’ Just a little something you might be curious about. Anyways, let’s see how the sweetness of Hokkien Prawn translates with this new noodle! Let’s crack it open!

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains crustacean. To prepare, add in powder and paste sachets and boiling water to fill line. Let steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Stir and garnish with fried onion. enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click to enlarge).

The shabu noodle block.

The soup base powder.

A fine powder with a seafood scent.

The paste sachet.

Smells awesome – like sweet prawn.

The garnish sachet.

The fried onions – big and crunchy.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added shrimp, hard boiled eggs, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and coriander. The noodles is again thin in this cup and very soft. It’s really interesting – not white but a deep tan color. I wasn’t particularly fond of it with the Penang White Curry, however I’ve found that with the Red Tom Yum Goong it was very well suited, and now again with the Hokkien Mee. The broth here is like you died and went to prawn mee heaven. It’s thick, oily, spicy and tasty. It’s just awesome stuff, and then they go and include those awesome fried onions. The only thing is the bustling of motorbikes and people talking at the hawker court. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8555655005678.

Here’s the last of the three new ‘Authentic Taste’ varieties from MyKuali that they sent a little while back. I was told that they’ve changed the way they cook the paste and that it will have enhanced shrimp flavor and aroma from the spices. Sounds good to me! Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains crustaceans and chicken (ingredients list hasn’t been upated – new packaging will reflect this). To prepare, cook noodles in 380ml boiling water for 3 minutes. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

Top Ten 2014 Re-Review: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

Last June, I’d never heard of Penang, nor really had tried many varieties of Malaysian instant noodles for that matter. I had no clue what to expect and was absolutely elated with this one – my core interest in reviewing instant noodles is that I want to try new things every day.
