#3006: Uni-President Guizhou Spicy Soybean Paste Flavor - China

First off, thanks to Kyle K. for help with translating this one! I found this up in Canada at FoodyWorld – a huge Asian supermarket which is a must see for anyone doing the tour of Asian grocery stores up in Richmond – lots of fun and much to see. These were on sale and looked neat so I went and got all the varieties. Let’s give this one a try!

#2987: Tapatio Ramen Noodle Soup Beef Flavor - United States

Hey look! Tapatio flavor instant noodles? Yeah! I know many of you have loved Tapatio on your noodles for years and they heard that as well, so here we are. Here’s a little about Tapatio from Wikipedia –

Tapatío is a hot sauce, produced in Vernon, California, that can be found at many supermarkets, pharmacies, and liquor stores in the United States.

Tapatío” is the name given to people from Guadalajara, Jalisco: the company’s founders come from Guadalajara. It is exported to MexicoCanadaCentral AmericaAustralia, and elsewhere.

The ingredients, as listed on the product label, are water, red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, acetic acidxanthan gum and sodium benzoate as a preservative. Tapatío comes in five sizes: 5, 10, and 32 fluid ounces, and 1 gallon (3.785 liters), as well as in 7-gram packets. The sauce overall has a Scoville rating of 3,000, hotter than Sriracha.[1]

The product slogan is “Es una salsa … Muy salsa” (very saucy”).

The Tapatío Hot Sauce company was started in 1971 by Jose-Luis Saavedra, Sr., in a 750-square-foot (70 m2) warehouse in Maywood, California.[6] In 1985, the company moved to a 8,500-square-foot (790 m2) facility in Vernon, California, 5 miles (8.0 km) from Downtown Los Angeles. Although larger than the first location, the new factory had a single loading dock and limited storage space, which created a new series of problems for the company. After a long search, a site was found for a developer to custom-build a new 30,000-square-foot (2,800 m2) facility, which Tapatío presently occupies. The new factory has several loading docks and automated production.

Let’s peel back the lid and see how this variety ticks!

The broth was good before the hot sauce was added – a kind of sweet and tangy seafood hit to it. Once the included habanero hot sauce was in play though it definitely upped it a notch, giving some great heat. The veggies hydrated well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 070662141281.

To start things off, I thought it would be interesting to try one of these Cup Noodles that come with hot sauce. Definitely not uncommon around the world to find a Cup Noodle variety with a sauce sachet, however it seems to be a little less common in the Americas. Let’s give it a try!

#1503: Nongshim Bowl Noodle Soup Shrimp Habanero Lime Flavor

It’s been so long since I’ve reviewed a new Bowl Noodle! I remeber a few years ago I was hunting high and low for certain varieties, many long gone. I remember the beef anfd ginger flavor was pretty good! Then they switched over to these microwaveable versions instead of the foam bowls – and I like them better! Curious how this one will be.

Something special with this review – it’s a double review! I used to review hot sauces a few years back – here’s a link to my old site, now mothballed. I got an email from the folks at TOKI Hot Sauce recently. They are trying to get their product going! It’s a Korean inspired hot sauce! They’ve got a Kickstarter campaign running at the moment – why not check them out? I’m going to cook up some nice shrimp to go with this one and slather them in the sauce! Let’s check both of these products out!

Here’s the back of the cardboard outer packaging (click image to enlarge). Contains both beef and fish products.

Here’s detail of the lid (click image to enlarge). To prepare, take the lid off completely. Add in the sachet contents and add room temperature water to the fill line. Microwave for 3-4 minutes (see the noodle texture chart!). Stir and enjoy! You can also do the same thing with boiling water.

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Has a lime scent.

Here’s just a few of the little bits from the bottom of the bowl.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added shrimp sauteed with Toki Hot Sauce, green onion, sweet onion, lime and bell pepper. The noodles have a nice texture to them – that comforty-buttery thing going on. The broth has a spicy and lime hit and a lighter shrimp flavor in the background which I would have enjoyed more of. The vegetable and shrimp bits while sparing hydrated well. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. The Toki Hot Sauce has a decent punch of heat, and is a nice balance of sweetness with a familiar gochujang kind of flavor. Like a teriyaki gochujang wham-bam – good stuff! Worth trying! More Indonesian noodles! This one’s a spicy pack of mi goreng – fried noodles!

This is the export label.

Here’s the package back (click image to enlarge) – the export sticker was a little obstinate.

Here’s the noodle block.

Well, not too hard to tell what we have here – from left to right, seasoned oil, hot chili sauce and sweet soy sauce.

Powdered seasoning sachet!

So everything gets put in the bowl and the noodles once done are drained and everything is stirred up.

Here’s the garnish packet – fried onions!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added two fried eggs, some roast turkey lunch meat, kizami shoga (pickled ginger), Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt and Melinda’s Garlic Habanero hot sauce. Oh – and the fried onion garnish. The noodles are great – chewy and soft too. The flavor is spicy and sweet – along with a satisfying and delicious crunch from the fried onion. This is grubbin! 4.5 out of 5.0 stars! UPC barcode 8998866200448 – get it here.

The veggies and the powder…

The powder just reeked of tomato – was happy about that!

Click image to enlarge. Finished product here… An egg was added. So its like tomato noodle soup almost. Strangely enough I have am urge to add a couple squirts of hot sauce – on hand I have a little bottle of Texas Pete hot sauce!  [4 minutes later] Hey that was awesome with hot sauce! I’m enthused! Okay I’m going to give this stuff 4.0 out of 5.0 stars – I must say this would be perfect with a grilled cheese alongside it! Get it here.
