#3306: Itsuki Tempura Soba - Japan

Here’s one from an Umai Crate – a subscription box from Japan. Use coupon code THERAMENRATER for a discount if you’d like to get one! Here’s what they have to say about it – ‘There’s a saying in Japan that long noodles are good luck for a long life! These soba (buckwheat) noodles are extra long for that reason! They also come with tasty crispy tempura balls, seaweed and crunchy shrimp.’

This one is interesting since in a previous Umai Crate, there was one that looks almost identical, but only had the powder sachet where this one has the topping as well – a nice addition! Let’s check it out.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added kamaboko, spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, and sesame seeds. The noodles are very good – soft and a good texture. The broth is my favorite tempura broth; not too sweet, not too fishy – just right on all fronts. The included garnish was particularly enjoyable with tempura at the forefront. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4901726014127.

#3305: Sapporo Ichiban CupStar Classic Shoyu - Japan

Today we have a Zenpop.JP variety – so what’s Zenpop? They’re a subscription service for all things Japanese! Definitely, check them out. By the way, use coupon code RAMENRATER to get $2 off! Here’s what they had to say about this one – ‘The original ‘CupStar Shoyu’ was released in 1975 (Showa 50), and is now back in your kitchen as a reprinted edition so you can try the original version. Toppings are scrambled eggs, kamaboko, shrimp, and scallion. The standard version today has minced pork, but the original version did not include it; instead, it has kamaboko (a type of cured fish paste). It is one of the simplest, yet most enjoyable instant ramens out there. Please enjoy the original version and explore a ‘back to the past’ experience!’

Nothing like a good shoyu – let’s give it a try!

Loose seasoning and solid ingredients from the cup.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, egg, narutomaki, chashu, shichimi togarashiand sesame seeds. The noodles are of good quality, however the chewiness was kind of off-putting to be honest. I think they just seemed wrong for the gauge. The broth was nice though, with pleasant inclusions of egg and kamaboko, as well as decently sized shrimp. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4901734037309.

Here’s what they had to say about this particular variety – “Based in Fukuoka on Kyushu island, the home of tonkotsu ramen, Ramen Jinanbo is an award winning Tonkotsu broth (pork bone broth) ramen that ranked #1 in a prestigious nationa ramen competition.

The chef has studied and perfected a recipe which uniquely minimizes the scent of the pork bones in order to create a rich soup base that is neither too fatty nor salty. This is a famously delicious soup that has become popular with all ages and people.

The classic Hakata-style made from wheat are thin and straight noodles, perfect for capturing this soup and delivering that perfect mouthful. Best prepared firm or al dente.”

#3294: Kubota Men Raimu Kitakata Ramen – Japan

#3294: Kubota Men Raimu Kitakata Ramen - Japan

Here’s a fancy variety that came from a Ramen Trunk. Ramen Trunk is a subscription service featuring monthly boxes of super premium ramen from Japan! Use coupon code RAMENRATER20OFF for a discount on your first order!

Here’s what they have to say about this one: ‘Kitakata is a small town of 90,000 people located in western Fukushima province. Sadly, Fukushima is best known nowadays for the recent tsunami, but in Japan the little area is very well known for their delicious ramen that is still thriving. Surrounded by rice fields and mountains, the only way to reach Kitakata is by local train.

This Kitakata ramen is a mild shoyu (soy sauce) based soup broth delicately balanced to not be too overpowering in flavor and only slightly oily. The noodles are decently tick, soft, and smooth. Unique to Kitakata ramen is the slight waviness of the noodles. The softness of the noodles are caused by a higher content of water than is typical since these noodles are ‘tsukemen.’ This causes the noodles to be slippery and some say they slide down your throat and hardly need to be chewed!’

#3292: Sapporo Ichiban Kita Kyushu Moji-Harbor Cheese Curry Ramen – Japan

#3292: Sapporo Ichiban Kita Kyushi Moji-Harbor Cheese Curry Ramen - Japan

Today we have a Zenpop.JP variety – so what’s Zenpop? They’re a subscription service for all things Japanese! Definitely, check them out. By the way, use coupon code RAMENRATER to get $2 off! Here’s what they had to say about this one – ‘Let us introduce you to this brand new breakthrough ramen! Yaki Curry (grilled curry) is Moji-Harbor’s, in Fukuoka prefecture, beloved local dish, enjoyed for over 60 years. There are numbers of local cafes serving this dish around Moji-Harbor. The noodle itself is seasoned too which makes the soup blend in better with noodles. It’s a great combination of spicy curry soup with the mellow flavor of cheese.’

This sounds really good – as many of you know, I’m a staunch advocate for curry of all kinds, and Japanese curry is one of my favorite varieties. Let’s see how it fares.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, soft egg, spring onion, shichimi togarashi, Noodles came out pretty well. Broth does indeed have a cheese and curry taste to it, but not really finding the combo all that impressive. I think if it included more vegetable or meat it might be better. Nevertheless, it does have a curry and cheese flavor. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4901734037071.
