picante beef #2816: Nissin Top Ramen Hot & Spicy Beef Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Hey look – Top Ramen got a facelift! They’ve been changing recipes all over their ranges – getting rid of artificial flavoring and MSG. They’ve also been changing names. This used to be picante beef. To be honest, I haven’t had the first variety in years and it’s nice to be able to have it again fresh. Let’s give it a look!

A light powder.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added cilantro, hard boiled egg and shichimi togarashi. The noodles are decent – very standard instant variety with a good gauge and soft chew. The broth has a very thin character however a pleasant salty beef and spicy taste to it. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 070662010129.

The Ramen Rater For Apple iPhone

I am very proud and happy to introduce the release of The Ramen Rater mobile app for the Apple iPhone! The app is the culmination of many months of work by myself and app developer Calvin Tam of Malaysia (you can see some of his other work here). You may have noticed a while back I posted an ad on the right side asking for folks who might be interested in developing an app with me for mobile users. Well, Calvin answered that call and devoted a great deal of time making this happen! I want to personally thank him for the time and effort expended on this app. Without further adieu, let me introduce you to The Ramen Rater for iPhone!

Welcome! This is the initial screen you will be greeted with. You can quickly scroll through the last 50 reviews and posts.

As you can see, the review’s stats are labeled at the top – title, stars and a shot of the product. Also, instead of the video being at the bottom, it is viewable at the top. Clicking on the video will bring it up in a window.

What you see here is the best part! You can scan a bar code from a package of instant noodles – if I’ve reviewed it, the app will find it and ask if you’d like to see the review! Note – right now, it’s only working correctly for 12 digit UPC bar codes. It likes to omit the first digit of EAN bar codes, which are 13 digits. This will be addressed in an upcoming update.

Finally, you can share the reviews/posts with people across the Internet through social media, email, send it in an SMS text message.

There’s how The Ramen Rater iPhone app v1.0 stands currently! It’s now available in the iTunes Store for $0.99USD. It will work on Apple Iphone, iPad, and iPods running iOS 7.1 and above. Some updates we’re talking about like a simple search box where you can enter info to search for instead of scanning, quick access to top ten lists and more are in the works! If you have any ideas, please feel free to comment! If you do download the app, please give it a good review if you like it! Thanks!

#444: Mr. Udon Oriental Udon Noodle Oriental Chicken Flavor Artificially Flavored

So here’s something new – Mr. Udon! These came from a Big Lots store north of here – was rather surprised to see it honestly. So let’s give ‘er a try!

Wow – crazy packets! The silver powder packet’s huge!

So powder and dry stuff… Looks interesting!

Click image to enlarge. Added two eggs to the boiling noodles. So first thing I’m noticing is that this chicken stuff tastes more like onion. The noodles are nice and chewy and thick. The broth is warming and hearty but yeah – very onion. I do like it – 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.

Hey look – I’m apparently not the only one who’s seen it in Big Lots!

They had a ton of Star Trek movie toys at one point!

#158: MAMA JokCup Artificial Pork Flavour Instant Porridge Soup

Pork porridge. Let me refine that – ARTIFICIAL pork porridge. Those three words have been kind of interesting to say while this little cup has been kicking it around here. But no more. Artificial pork porridge is lunch.

I like the little graphic of the pig happy as can be  that he isn’t in this cup of porridge. He’s probably also relieved that most people don’t go into a restaurant and request as to the special of the day and hear ‘pork porridge.’

So here’s the end result. It came with a plastic spoon but it wasn’t my style. So you’re probably wondering what the heck pork porridge – that is artificial pork porridge – tastes like? Well, imagine Cream of Wheat but salty and with bits of onions in there and you’ve pretty much nailed it. It’s surprisingly good to be honest. So even though this wasn’t noodles, it was an instant affair in a cup. I see for it to be treated the same. I give this stuff 2.5 out of 5.0 stars; it was good but I couldn’t really see ever getting it other than for novelty and it really doesn’t give any feeling of satiation after eating it; more of a ‘wow that was full of sodium’ kind of feeling and 1170mg is a lot but much lower than most things of this nature.
