#922: Sunlee Shitake Mushroom Instant Vermicelli

Here’s one we got during our summer vacation. Found it at the Uwajimaya in Beaverton, Oregon. Mushrooms… Well, Let’s give it a go!

Here’s a close-up of he text on the lid (click to enlarge)

Hey – it’s a fork!

The noodle whorl.

This is kind of interesting; I’ve seen many many dual packets like this, but never one that is horizontally labeled.

The seasoning powder with the chili powder on top.

Seasoned oil.

Looks like a clear oil. Has some bits in there though.

Bits of shitake.

Little bits!

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles are pretty good; they’re bean vermicelli. The broth is spicy with a strong chili powder taste and very mushroomy. The bits of mushroom are spongy. This was not my cup of tea. 1.25 out of 5.0 stars. If you love mushrooms in all forms, this might be for you, but as for myself, this is really funky. UPC bar code 761934016481 – get it here.

#902: Sunlee Pho Bo Instant Rice Stick Beef Flavour

I reviewed another version of this in #502. It looks like this one is somewhat different; different color packet and a different sized rice noodle chunk. Let’s try it!

Here’s detail of the writing on the label (click to enlarge).

Sweet – forks are rad!

Here’s the rice stick. Like a bird nest.

The powder base.

Lots of fine powder.

Seasoned oil.

The veggie packet.

Nice little assortment.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added the dregs of my freezer bag of green bell pepper and broccoli, some Urashima Sesame & Salt furikake and some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles are pretty good – easily broken by the lips with a crumbly texture and fun chew. The broth isn’t bad; it has a bit of beef flavor but mostly is overwhelmed by a strong sweet basil flavor. I love sweet basil in real pho noodles, but this just made me want pho take out. The veggies were okay but I wish there were more here and there were some TVP beef bits that were nice additions. All in all, not too shabby but room for improvement. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 761934016535 .

#875: Sunlee Artificial Chicken Flavour Rice Vermicelli

Here’s one from Thailand – Sunlee. Rice noodles eh… Alright, let’s give it a try.

A close up of the lid (click to enlarge).

A fork!

The rice noodle block.

Dry seasonings…

Lots of chicken flavor base.

Red pepper flakes.

Seasoned oil.

Looks like some seasoned oil.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some baked chicken and some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles are extremely thin. This is one that using scissors to cut them is helpful. They’re not bad but not great. The broth has a nice chicken flavor. This definitely wasn’t Sunlee’s best. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 76193401644 .

Disco from Thailand!

#820: Sunlee Tom Yum Shrimp Flavour Instant Rice Stick

Today is probably the hottest day we’re going to have in Western Washington this summer. Right now it’s 88 degrees! I thought a nice bowl of spicy noodles would go well with it. I mean, isn’t it hot in Thailand too?

Detail of the lid info (click image to enlarge).

An included fork!

Yay rice stick!

Seasoning powder.

A decent amount of it – has a very acidic taste.

Seasoned oil.

Looks much like a paste.

Andy was stoked – we got some kamaboko and it was really good. Check out his blog, Andy’s LEGO Stuff here!

Finished (click image to enlarge). I added a little black pepper and some Huy Fong Sriracha chili sauce. The noodles are sturdier than a wheat flour noodle being that they’re rice stick. A little chewier but not too much so and still breakable by pursing one’s lips. The broth is quite good – a nice spicy and citrus flavor. Not too oily either. I should note also once the broth cooled and got kind of cold, it was also very refreshing in the hot weather – worth trying this way. Good stuff – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 761934016504 .

A little blurb about sunlee – they make rice too

Had no idea that there was ‘Bangkok Pop’ as well

#647: Sunlee Instant Noodle Tom Yum Shrimp Flavour

Cool – a Sunlee bowl. I’ve had a couple of these before – they were crab flavored and really quire good. Tom Yum soup is one of my favorites and hopefully since this is from Thailand, it should be pretty good.

Click image to enlarge. The ingredients list winds around the rim of the bowl. I like how it mentions that you put 360cc of water in – that’s a pretty precise measurement and usually they just say ‘to the line’ instead of an exact number.

Seasoned oil and seasoning powder. This is another one whose packets are just the the Yum Yum ones.

Here’s the block with seasonings on top – awaiting the 360cc os boiling H2O.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a single fried egg with a dash of Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning on top. The noodles weren’t bad – a little bit on the slightly non-pliable side. The broth was great – very sippagle and had a good spiciness and citrus taste, as well as a hint of shrimp. Tasty little bowl – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 761934016320 . Get it here.

Sunlee makes rice too!

Herman Cain’s campaign chief Mark Block remixed. I think everybody’s forgotten about both of them for the most part already.

#502: Sunlee Pho Bo Instant Rice Stick Artificial Beef Flavour Bowl

So this looks interesting – a square bowl! It’s also Sunlee brand which I’ve enjoyed in the past. Got this at a nice little shop in Anaheim while we were doing Disneyland.

Rice stick? Beef and sticks of rice… Sounds like fun!

A few packets and a fork! Oil, veggies and seasoning powder

Here’s everything out of the packet atop the noodles. I like the color of the oil and the veggies against the rice sticks…

Click image to enlarge. So you add 360cc water and cover it for a few minutes and presto! Not too shabby – I wish the noodles had been a little more done. I let them sit extra long too. Maybe that’s what makes it ‘stick.’ Anyways, the flavor was nice and beefish and the broth was tasty. The broth did however have some greasiness that didn’t jibe right with the noodles and kind of knocked everything off kilter and made the meal seem like an afterthought as the packaging was very attractive.  I saw this same thing happen with the Fashion Foods varieties I’ve reviewed before. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. It could’ve been done a little differently and been quite nice but honestly it was a trainwreck.

I looked up Sunlee TVC on YouTube and this was right up there… Interesting…

An old film about propaganda.

Where To Get It: OC Market Poultry & Rotisserie in Anaheim, CA

This place was awesome! Quite a few varieties of noodles I hadn’t seen before – pretty much the full line of FF bowls and even a Sunlee square bowl. Not only that, but the woman who was at the register was really nice and actually talked to us! A lot of the time at checkouts at Asian groceries I find that the people working there don’t make eye contact or even speak to us at all. One other thing – the place smelled really good – I think that it’d be an excellent place to eat in as well. Highly recommended!

#411: Sunlee Crab Flavour Instant Vermicelli

So here’s an interesting looking one. The noodles are made of mung bean! Bean thread! Let’s check out these noodles from Thailand!

Some oil, some powder seasoning and some chili powder. I opted to tread lightly with the chili powder – don’t feel like heartburn right now.

Strange looking noodles, huh? Just you wait…

Click image to enlarge. Weird looking huh? They’re slippery and oft times hard to fork. I usually don’t like bean thread but I like these. The broth is nice and the thread is reasonably enjoyable. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.

Jeez what did we do? Why don’t we get weenie pizza?

#331: Sunlee Crab Flavour Instant Noodle (Bowl)

So here’s something I’ve not tried before – Sunlee brand from Thailand! Crab is usually a pretty good instant noodle flavor… Let’s see how this tastes…

Clockwise from top: a fork (gee, no way!), chili powder and soup base dual packets and seasoned oil.

So I noticed that it said that there was no fat in it which I figured couldn’t possibly be correct when it said how many calies were from fat. So if you ever see something like this and you need to know, there’s 9 calories per gram of fat. So its about 12.2 grams of fat here.

Seasonings atop the noodle block.

Click image to enlarge. I added two fried eggs with a little garlic salt. Well I must say this is super uber tasty stuff! The noodles were very nice, the broth was very tasty and spicy enough too. I was extremely pleased and happy to give this one 4.5 out of 5.0 stars!
