#2010: MAMA Rangers Snack Noodles Popcorn Flavour

Here’s another one of these interesting snack noodles from Myanmar! This pack is very small – 15g actually! Let’s see what’s within!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, open package and eat. enjoy!

Here’s the contents of one single package.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added some almonds. The noodles are crunchy and very short. The flavor is that of kettle corn; buttery and sweet. It’s kind of bizarre to be honest; the texture of the noodles isn’t where I expect the flavor of kettle corn! But sure enough, there it is. Plus, there are no popcorn husks to get stuck in your teeth! For A snack noodle, I give this 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8951011551123.

Probably the most well-known MAMA instant – MAMA Instant Noodle, Tom Yum Shrimp Spicy Flavor, 3.17 Ounce (Pack of 20)

Curious about Myanmar? Here’s a list of things to do in Yangon, the capitol of Myanmar!

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2016 Edition

It’s been quite a year for The Ramen Rater. I’ve reviewed 357 new instant noodle varieties. I got to visit an instant noodle company in Thailand. I just hit my 2000th review. Since the beginning of this ‘noodle journey,’ I’ve wanted to try flavors from around the world and have been able to do just that. This new list is a compilation of the best of the best; the most memorable and most wonderful of the 2,004 varieties I’ve sampled thus far. If you are an instant noodle company and I haven’t reviewed your products, please contact me – I would love to review them. I decided to include what I added to them this year – however note the products are scored before anything is added. With that, let’s have a look at The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of all Time 2016 Edition.

The full video presentation.

MAMA Instant Noodles Coconut Milk Flavour – Myanmar

I received a big box of samples from the company that produces MAMA instant noodles earlier this year, and was thrilled with the cup variety of this one – so much so that it made the 2015 Top Ten Cups list. The pack version was spectacular as well! Great noodles enjoy their time in a sweet (but not overly sweet) sea of coconut and chicken flavor. It is very unique and compelling; a fascinator for the palate. This is Myanmar’s first time on the top ten instant noodles list. Added hard boiled egg, baked chicken, coriander and seared sweet onion.  Original review

#9: Zeng Noodles Scallion With Sichuan Pepper Flavor – Taiwan

I had the opportunity to try quite a few new Taiwanese varieties this year and this one really got me going. The noodles have a broad, flat character with a very nice chew to them. They don’t have broth, but a flavor which is out of this world. The sauce coats the noodles completely – not too much, not too little. The balance of the Sichuan pepper to other flavors is masterful; it balances perfectly. The Sichuan pepper has a kind of effect like mint – if you eat mint and then draw breath over your palate, you get a cooling feeling. Added Chinese sausage, fried garlic and scallions. Original review

#8: Prima Juzz’s Mee Creamy Chicken Flavour – Sri Lanka / Singapore

I’ve always loved creamy chicken flavor instant noodles. In fact, I believe the first instant noodle I reviewed when I started the site was a creamy chicken variety. These are a completely different ballgame. The noodles remind me of Taiwanese varieties – thick and a little wide, but much softer. The broth is very elegant; more like cream of chicken soup – but with a rich and thick flavor. Added TVP gives it more umami and satisfies. Made in Sri Lanka for the Singaporean market. Added hard boiled egg and chicken baked with Johnny’s Chicken Seasoning and BonCabe Level 10 rubbed into it at 375 degrees for 45 minutes.  Original review

#7: Wugudaochang Tomato Beef Brisket Flavor Purple Sweet Potato Noodles – China

This one’s just amazing to see. First, the purple noodles not only add a striking visual, they are of very high quality. They have a familiar gauge, but a chewiness that’s top notch. The broth is very good – excellent tomato flavor with beef notes and a very gourmet texture. The best part are the large pieces of fresh tomato and beef; truly something to savor. This is China’s first appearance in the top ten instant noodles list. Added coriander. Original review

#6: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle Authentic Taste – Malaysia

This noodle was the first from Malaysia that really got me interested in Malaysian varieties. A noodle with a perfect gauge and chew rests in a broth which is now legendary. It’s new ‘Authentic Taste’ recipe is thick, spicy and just plain awesome. This is its third year in a row on the top ten instant noodles list. Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, mint, tau pok, Dodo fish ball and sweet onion. Original review

#5: Prima Taste Singapore Curry Wholegrain La Mian – Singapore

I’ve enjoyed Prima Taste’s Curry La Mian for a few years now – the noodles are thick and chewy, the broth thick and strong, especially with their wonderful paste and coconut powder. What’s different here is that they’ve upped their game with this new recipe noodle using wholegrain flour. It gives them a heartier chew and a rustic, almost artisan quality. Added coriander, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, Dodo fishballs and tau pok. Original review

#4: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Noodle Authentic Taste – Malaysia

Another one of MyKuali’s new ‘Authentic Taste’ recipes. Again, we have the excellent gauge and chew of the noodles. The broth is a thick tom yum goong – strong shrimp, lemongrass and tomato notes abound as well as a lot more mushroom taste in this new recipe. The heat is there as well. Reminds me of our visit to Langkawi in 2014. Its second year on the top ten instant noodles list. Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander and prawns. Original review

#3: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa Improved Taste – Malaysia

Another variety with a new recipe. This one is really fantastic. Firstly (although it doesn’t enter into the judging), the package is really striking. The noodles are a nice gauge and of good character and quality. The broth is a very nice and thick curry – thickened with coconut cream powder instead of non-dairy creamer. The inclusion of the sambal is really great. The new recipe boosted its flavor to be stronger and richer. This is its second year on the top ten instant noodles list. Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and tau pok. Original review

#2: MyKuali Penang Spicy Prawn Soup Noodle Authentic Taste – Malaysia

Up from seventh place last year, MyKuali really upped their game with this new Authentic Taste recipe. The noodles as always are very good – great gauge and chewiness. The broth is just amazing – good thickness and so rich and flavorful with a sweet prawn flavor. What’s more is they include a sachet of fried onion – not pulverized little bits but good sized pieces that are just wonderful. Beautiful. This is its second year on the top ten instant noodles list. Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander, hard boiled egg, barbecue pork and prawns. Original review

#1: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa Wholegrain La Mian – Singapore

In the top spot this year we have an old favorite of mine with a new change. The wholegrain noodle just improves this variety by leaps and bounds; giving it such a nice heartiness and rustic flavor and texture. The broth seems unchanged; a beautiful appearance; the oil like shimmering rubies in a cream colored sea. The flavor is rich and spiciness very accessible to most folks. I should mention that both the original Laksa and Curry varieties would be on this list if the new wholegrain ones didn’t exist, however in different places. Added Dodo fish ball and carved squid. Original review

There’s the list for 2015. I will be publishing the results from the 2016 Reader’s Poll – look for it soon! If you are an instant noodle company and I haven’t reviewed your products, please contact me – I would love to review them.

#1988: MAMA Instant Noodles Chicken Soup Flavour

2016_2_16_1970_001

One of the last ones I have from MAMA Myanmar! Been a lot of fun trying these. Looks like the only Myanmar, Cambodian and Bangladeshi varieties I’ve ever reviewed have been by MAMA. Let’s see how this chicken soup fares!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add package contents to a bowl. Add 350ml boiling water and cover 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base.

Has a moce chicken scent.

An oil sachet.

Has a garlic scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added baked chicken, hard boiled egg, salt and pepper cashew nuts, coriander and crushed red pepper. The noodles hydrated well with a surprising amount of backbone. The broth has a nice chicken taste with a hint of garlic. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8850987123092.

#1964: MAMA Instant Noodles Coconut Milk Flavour

When I tried the cup version of this, I liked it so much it got on the Top Ten Cups List for 2015. I’ve been waiting for the right time to try this one; since there’s probably only one in all of the United States I’m guessing, I really wanted to make it the right day. Well, since it is soon to expire, it’s the right day. Let’s have a look and see if it’s as good as the cup.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. to prepare, add noodle block to 250ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in contents of sachets. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base sachet.

Has a coconut scent.

A seasoned oil sachet.

A bright colored oil.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added hard boiled egg, baked chicken, coriander and seared sweet onion. The noodles are slightly different from the normal MAMA fare – slightly less crumbly – something I found fascinating and enjoyable. The broth was just as good as the cup variety – it has a nice coconut flavor and almost a haunting sweetness to it that’s not overwhelming, but just right. The oil has a tinge of spiciness, but it’s way in the background. This stuff is so intriguing; and I have fallen under it’s spell. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8951987101906.

#1939: MAMA Instant Noodles Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum Flavour

Another one from the big batch I got after our Thailand trip from the MAMA noodles people. Thanks again! So this has been one of my favorites in the past – the regular Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum has been on my annual top ten list in the past – but this is the Myanmar version. I’ve noticed in some varieties a little but of a smoky taste – wonder what we’ll find here? One way to find out – let’s check out this shrimp creamy tom yum!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Unsure whether this contains shrimp or not, but I would guess it does. To prepare, add contents of package to a bowl and add 300ml boiling water. Cover and let steep 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base.

A light powder with flecks of vegetable.

A paste sachet.

Has a shrimp scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, sprimp, Thai chilli and coriander. The noodles have that trademark chew that MAMA noodle have – thin and chewy. The broth has the same great tom yum the other countries’ varieties have – strong lemongrass and chilli notyes with a nice shrimp taste. Love this stuff! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8950121055750.

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodle Snacks Of All Time 2016 Edition

Instant noodle… snacks? Yeah! Snacks of all kinds have come from instant noodles – candy, crunchy bits, you name it. They’re popular all over Asia and also the United States; have you ever taken a pack of instant noodles, crushed them and added in the seasoning and shaken the bag up and eaten them like potato chips or popcorn? Well, this is popular elsewhere as well! Let’s check out my favorite instant noodle snacks from over 1,900 reviews. Enjoy!

#10: Wei Lih What’s That? Leisure Meatballs Spicy Chicken Flavor – Taiwan

They’re crunchy and light. They have a slight sweetness and a spiciness that is very slight but builds the more you eat. Original review

#9: Mamee Monster Snek Mi Perisa Ayam – Malaysia

2016_1_16_tts_003

The noodles are nice and crunchy. They have that lightness you would expect from an uncooked instant noodle, but not really oily as some can be. The flavoring is light and has a salty and almost sesame oil kind of flavor to it. Original review

#8: A-Sha Prince Katsu Snack Noodles – Taiwan

They’re very light and crunchy and have a nice salty and crunchy appeal to them. There’s a bit of a sweet and garlic or onion kind of thing going on as well as a hint of spiciness. Original review

#7: J.J. Snek Mi Perisa BBQ – Malaysia

The noodles are crunchy and have a nice flavor to them – very much reminding me of fried chicken from a well known restaurant chain. These were very good! Original review

#6: Samyang Foods Star Popeye Ramyun Snack – South Korea

It’s very crunchy and the noodles have a very light cinnamon note to them. The sugaryness of the rock candy brings this out in a nice way. Original review

#5: Mama Rangers Snack Noodles Shrimp Tom Yum Flavour – Myanmar

The snack noodle pieces are very short. The have a nice crunch to them. The flavor is that of a sweet tom yum, with a hint of spiciness, an unmistakable hit of lemongrass, and definitely tastes like sugary tom yum. It’s a nice flavor and was enjoyable. Original review

#4: Oyatsu Baby Star Snack Noodle Yakisoba Flavor – Japan

These short lengths of noodle are great. They’re light and crunchy. The flavor is that of yakisoba, so a little Worcestershire and salt and spices. It’s great stuff! Original review

#3: Ve Wong Little Prince Bacon – Taiwan

These little crunchy bits of noodles have a great bacon flavor. The big bag comes with a ton of little bags. My wife and I found these at an Asian grocery near Disneyland during our honeymoon – bacon snacks!  Original review

#2: Komforte Chockolates Savory Ramen – United States

The chocolate was exceedingly good – a really nice 53% dark chocolate I enjoyed thoroughly – premium stuff. It’s not so dark that it will put off the milkies and not so light on cacao that it lacks richness. The bits of noodles were nice and crunchy, and not hard like a rock. The soy, onion and garlic flavors were very much muted by the rich chocolate flavor, but that wasn’t a horrible thing. Original review

#1: Mamee Monster Snek Mi Perisa Pedas – Malaysia

I really like the crunch of the noodles; they seem a little different than the other Mamee Monster varieties; they’re really crispy, but maybe have a little more give to them. They have a nice spicy flavor to them which was great and a little bit of sweetness and more spiciness from the seasoning – excellent snacks. Original review

#1912: MAMA Instant Noodles Chicken Sichek Flavour

I still haven’t found anywhere with any kind of straight definition of sichek, but it seems to me that it’s just a kind of dry noodle dish, kind of like mi goreng. The tom yum variety I had a few days back was quite good, and so today with Andy over here and his penchant for enjoying all things chicken, I thought I’d make this one for him. Let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains chicken. To prepare, add noodle block to a bowl and add 350ml boiling water. Let steep for 3 minutes. Drain. Add in sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry seasoning base.

A light powder with flecks of vegetable.

An oil sachet.

Has an onion scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added coriander and baked chicken. As I expected, this was like a different take on mi goreng. The noodles have a decent gauge and nice chew to them. The flavor is kind of like a smoked chicken – I’ve noticed a lot of these MAMA varieties from Myanmar have this kind of smoky taste going on – fascinating. Decent oiliness and flavor throughout. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8951987101021.

#1902: MAMA Seafood Tom Yum Sichek Flavour

Another one from MAMA when I went to Thailand. They sent me a slew of different kinds made in their factories all over the world! This one’s from Myanmar. I haven’t seen the word ‘sichek’ before – and I can’t find anywhere that will translate it. I’m just going to infer that it might mean soup, but now that I look at the cooking method, this one is drained so perhaps it’s a term for a dry noodle? No clue honestly, but let’s give it a look!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add noodle block to a bowl and add 350ml boiling water. cover and steep 3 minutes. Drain. Add sachets contants. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The seasoning sachet.

A very light powder.

A paste sachet.

Thick and oily.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added shrimp, fishcake (kamaboko), coriander and Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts. The noodles hydrated perfectly in 3 minutes. They had a good spring and chew to them. The flavor was excellent – seafood tom yum for sure with a nice bite and an almost smoky element. I’ve had a few tom yum stir noodles and this one was the best thus far. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 8951012000927.

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, open package and eat. enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added almonds and bbq pork. The noodles are crunchy, but not break your teeth crunchy. The are very short as well. The barbecue flavor is interesting; kind of a salty, sesame and BBQ potato chip flavor. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9510202028.

#1889: MAMA Rangers Snack Noodles Sour Cream Flavour

Okay so for this one – images are smaller than they appear! This is a tiny 15 gram package of snack noodles. It was one that I saw on a table of products that were displayed during a big meeting in Thailand for MAMA noodles and their global factories and these were from Myanmar. I’ll tell you right now that as soon as someone invents a transported like they had in Star Trek, I’m buying one that just takes me to grocery stores and markets in foreign countries. It’s funny; when thinking about going to a foreign country, my first thought is what kind of grocery stores they have there and the exotic instant noodle varieties within. Yep – I’m a basket case. Let’s check out this snack noodle from MAMA of Myanmar!

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, open bag and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added some almonds (picture contains 3 packages of the product as well). The noodles are short and have a pleasing crunch to them – they’re not break your teeth crunchy which is nice. The flavor is very much akin to sour cream and onion potato chip flavoring. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 8951011551130.

#1865: MAMA Shrimp Tom Yum Flavour Cup Noodles

Here’s another one I received after the trip to Thailand I took in May. Thanks again! This one hails from Myanmar! Let’s look within!

Dry soup base.

Has a bright lemongrass scent.

An oil sachet.

Has a spicy shrimp scent.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added coriander, lime and shrimp. The noodles hydrated decently in 3 minutes – good gauge and chew. The broth was interesting; I detected the standard spicy and lemongrass notes, but there was an underlying smokiness I’d not experienced before in a tom yum. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9510412609.
