Another one from Colin – thanks! In 2014, I visited Malaysia and found quite a few varieties of Cintan products at a grocery store called Econsave in Butterworth. I didn’t expect to get one from somebody who lives here and sourced here. However, I’m very curious what this original flavor is like. Moreover, what is original flavor? Perhaps their vegetable flavor? I guess we’ll see. Now, let’s check it out!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, coriander, tau pok, sous video chicken and hard boiled egg. First, noodles hydrate out well – very standard. The broth is interesting, but not at the same time. I would call it chicken flavor since it is definitely more chicken-like. However, it is on the bland side. Finally, if you’re the type who is non-committal to anything involving choice, this is the flavor for you. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 025296932026.

#1862: Ibumie Always Mi Goreng Asli

For awhile now, people have been asking if I’d reviewed Ibumie’s Always Mi Goreng. Well, no – that’s because I’d never found it or received a sample or donation from a reader. I’ve seen it around for years on the Internet. About a month or so ago my wife and I were at the Edmonds 99 Ranch Market and she noticed a whole bunch of varieties and asked if I’d tried them. I’m legally blind, which basically means my eyesight is there, but so poor that it’s hard for me to cross the street, would be a menace behind the wheel, and miss a lot of instant noodles that my wife catches at the store! So, if you’re one of the folks who have messaged me about this one, you can thank Kit for her keen observation! Let’s check out Always Mi GOreng!

Here’s the back of the package, a four pack (click to enlarge). This is an import/distributor sticker – probably the largest one I’ve seen. They’re distributed by Walong, 99 Ranch Market’s big distribution asset.

Here’s the back of one of the individual packages (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to a pot of boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. While the noodle cook, add the sachet contents to a bowl. Drain noodles. Add noodles to the bowl and mix thoroughly with sachet contents. Enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added shrimp and a fried egg. The noodles cooked up nicely – good chew, good quantity. The flavor is a very standard mi goreng; a sweet and slightly spicy variant. Missed the fried onion. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9555050301115.

#1603: Salam Mie Mi Goreng Ala Jawa Dengan Sambal Cabe Asli

Got this one during my trip to Malaysia at the Chain Ferry Econsave in Butterworth, Penang. Today is March 5th, 2015 and Momofuku Ando would have been 105 years old today! It’s fascinating to me to think that I wouldn’t be doing any of this if he didn’t invent the instant noodle. Happy Birthday, Mr. Andi!  This one however is an Indonesian brand called Salam Mie. The flavor translates to original spicy sambal. Let’s have a look at this variety by Salam Mie!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to a pot of briskly boiling water for 3 minutes. While you wait, add contents of all sachets but the fried onion one to a plate and combine. Drain noodles and combine with seasonings on the plate. Sprinkle with the onion and enjoy!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added kerapuk aci, hard boiled egg and shrimp with Megah Sari Original Sambal Bakso and BonCabe Level 3 chilli seasoning. The noodles are just as I expected – good gauge and chew. The flavor is really quite nice – this is the mi goreng flavor I love but with a very nice added kick thabks to the included sambal. Sweet, salty and spicy combined in a perfect trifecta. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.EAN bar code 8992731101533.

#1230: Saji Sajimee Original Soto Soup Flavour (Mi Sup Soto Asli)

Here’s one I was sent by Annie T. over at MyKuali – thank you very much! I mentioned to her how I’d not reviewed many Malaysian varieties and she sent me a bunch of them! Pretty neat since MyKuali make instant noodles in Malaysia! Let’s check out this variety!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat-free but check for yourself. To make it, boil 350ml water and add the noodle block and cook for 3 minutes. Add contentds of the sachets, stir, and you’re done.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sauteed beef, sweet onion and bell peppers as well as hard boiled egg with a little Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt. The noodles are good – nice chew and pretty standard texture. The broth is very nice – has a strong star anise scent and taste which was very welcome as well as the hint of lime in there. The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Indonesian Instant Noodles Of All Time 2013 Edition

When I was very young, I first discovered a satay variety of Indonesian mi goreng and loved it. I would go on special trips to Seattle just to get tons of it! The many seasoning sachets, oils, and the exotic flavors – it was great! I have been very fortunate to be able to try many, many more varieties of Indonesia instant noodles. I think what makes them distinctly different from others in the world are the use of sweetness and spiciness. These flavors balance so well in mi goreng. Then there’s flavors like lime, hot chillies and the crunch of fried onion. Reviewing such exotic varieties are what makes being The Ramen Rater so enjoyable! #10: Mie Sedaap Mi Goreng Perisa Asli

This one came with quite a few fried onions. Fried onions are wonderful things, especially on mi goreng! The good crunch paired with the sweet and spicy flavors is very good. Original review here

#9: Sarimi Isi 2 Mi Goreng Rasa Ayam Kecap

‘Isi 2’ means ‘for two.’ What I liked about this one was its quantity and balance of heat, sweet soy and a nice chicken flavored sauce. Original review here

#8: Eat & Go Spicy Chicken Mi Instan Cup

This one really took me by surprise. It comes in a small package but has all the accoutrements you would expect in a pack version as well as a fork! The flavor was nice and frisky with the spiciness and it didn’t stop there. Very well done. Original review here

#7: Healtimie Green Barley Noodle Milk Chicken Soup

I’ll be honest – I haven’t had great luck enjoying green noodles in the past! With every rule however, there’s an exception. The slightly wider and flat noodles had a great texture and flavor. The broth was very enjoyable and hearty. Original review here

#6: ABC Selera Pedas Mi Rebus Hot Gulai Chicken Flavour

Curry as well as coconut flavors impressed me here. The noodles had a nice quality and a satisfying texture. A very well-rounded bowl of noodles! Original review here

#5: SuperMi Gobang Goreng Rasa Ayam Bawang

The flavor is great – definitely has an onion chicken flavor and also a lot of sweetness, no doubt from the sweet soy sauce. The chili sauce that came with it also supplies a nice amount of heat. There’s a ton of fried onion to add on top at the end for a nice crunch. Original review here

Here it is. How could a top list of Indonesian instants be complete without Indomie Mi Goreng? I went with the Jumbo as you really can’t have too much of a good thing. Good noodles, sweet and spicy – this is great stuff! Original review here

#3: Indomie Mi Goreng Rendang

In a CNN International survey, rendang was voted top. The noodles are chewy enough without being too chewy. The flavor is excellent – like a hot curry beef taste that works so well. I love it. Original review here

#1: Indomie Mi Keriting Goreng Spesial

Of all the questions I’ve received as The Ramen Rater, people have asked where they can get the version of this sold in the USA more than anything else. Unfortunately, it’s not sold here anymore – the folks in Indonesia are quite lucky! The noodles in this one are very nice – flat and a little broader than the others in this list and with an excellent flavor. If on a desert island and only able to pick one variety to have with me, this one would come to mind. Original review here

Well, there you go! Thanks to everyone who has sent samples and donations for me to try from Indonesia! It sure looks like there a many I have yet to sample which makes me quite happy! I can’t get enough of the Indonesian varieties and hope to review more soon.

#807: SuperMi Mi Instan Super Rasa Ayam Bawang

Here’s another one from a friend in  Jakarta, Indonesia! Thank you! So what is Rasa Ayam Bawang you ask? Simple: Garlic Chicken Flavor! Sounds awesome! Oh, but wait – when I translate onion to Indonesian it says bawang too. Uh oh – I’m confused. Can anyone make a comment as to this? It would be greatly appreciated! UPDATE – Just got the comment I was looking for:

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some onions, Fresno peppers, a fried egg, some baked chicken, pickled ginger and Huy Fong Sriracha hot chili sauce – and pepper. The noodles were nice – fluffy and tasty. The broth was excellent – had a reeally good chicken flavor and the chili powder gave it a nice little kick. Great stuff! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars! #655: Cap Atoom Bulan Mie Telor Asli

Found this last week while looking for stuff to make my curry soup. Not something standard here; just noodles. But they’re fried noodles from Indonesia by the company that makes the Super Bihun. That rad looking bomb logo calls to me and so here we try Mie Telor Asli Cap Atoom Bulan.

In the pack you get three sheets of noodles like this. They’re about 4mm thick.

I decided that I’d make three bowls; one for my wife, my son and myself. This is the one for my wife. Drained noodles with a little garlic salt, pepper and ham.

Here’s my son Andy’s – I cooked them using the seasoning packet from some Indomie Onion chicken flavor noodles – also from Indonesia. He thinks it should get five stars – high praise!

I went for broth – I used the flavorings from a pack of Indomie Soto Mie and dropped an egg in and covered at the end.

Now for the review: this stuff was chewy and thicker than the noodles from Indonesia I’ve tried. It was interestiong cooking them in a little saucepan as well – got the water boiling and had to babysit the plank of noodles until they were pliable enough the entirely enter the boiling water. Of course, you could break them in half, but that’s against my ideas on noodles. Anyways, good stuff – 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. Curious what they would normally be used with. UPC barcode 8994357010015 .
