We end the year on an interesting note today! My son Miles is very interested in trying out Buldak. Now, he’s very food sensitive – he generally only like non warm, crunchy things (Cheez-Its, chips, apples) , pudding, chocolate milk, soda… It’s kind of an uphill battle introducing new things for him to try that he’ll go for, Noodles are definitely not going to be an easy go except for the fact he really wants to do Buldak. We saw this at 7-Eleven and he was all over it, so we got it. I’m going to cook it up, add nothing, and let it cool. I can’t think of any time he’s eaten anything hot temperature wise in years. He used to eat oatmeal and peanut butter with me, and he did used to eat noodles – but at a certain point he stopped. Is this the turning point? There will be a mukbang below – so watch and see.
It’s New Year’s Eve as I type this. The kids want to stay up to midnight which they usually do. So that’s cool – we let them. Anyways, let’s give it a go.
Samyang Buldak Spicy Ramen Artificial Spicy Chicken Flavor – United States

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, fill to line with boiling water and cover 4 minutes. Drain. Add in sachet contents. Finally, stir and enjoy!

Detail of the lid (click to enlarge). Note the three triangles – they’re to poke with chopsticks and use for drain spouts.

An instant noodle block.

A sachet of spicy sauce.

A sachet of garnish.

Finished (click to enlarge). Nothing added. Noodle was great – texture and gauge worked very well. The weird thing was the flavor. I’ve been reviewing Buldak for a very long time; I tried it when it first hit the market, US versions and Korean versions. That being said, this is the least heat and most savory version I’ve tried. I ponder whether this is made to appease the chicken flavor idea in western markets; Buldak sauce is simply that – a sauce that goes on chicken. Calling that sauce chicken flavor makes no sense – like calling Sweet Baby Ray’s chicken flavor just because you might put it on chicken, or beef flavor et al. That being said, I have to admit, I like this iteration, but it is in no way ‘original’ but a new recipe compared to its roots. I’d say it’s easily half as spicy as the original. I wonder if the current Korean version is still regular strength. Quite nice and as always the garnish works. Probably the tastiest original Buldak thus far. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.
