#3073: Trader Joe’s Miso Ramen Soup – United States

#3073: Trader Joe's Miso Ramen Soup - United States

A lot of people enjoy visiting Trader Joe’s and trying their products. Actually, there aren’t many products if any that I think are actually ‘their’ products – they get companies who make a good product to do a ‘private label,’ often the same product or some with a couple tweaks and then packaged with Trader Joe’s graphics. I believe this one to be actually a cup of Mike’s Mighty Good Craft Ramen. Anyways, let’s check this new cup out!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added soft egg, spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts , chashu and togarashi. The noodles are fascinating – kind of collapse instead of chew. They’re not mushy, but become so quickly in the mouth. The broth is definitely a red miso, and nori is rather prevalent. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 00604116.

#3023: Trader Joe's Chicken Ramen Soup - United States

I know a lot of people are really into Trader Joe’s. What I’ve seen is that they find brands and products they think would be good with their packaging and then get the company that makes it to do a private label for them and sells it under their name. I think that’s what it looks like here. In fact, maybe these should be known not as Trader Joe’s but Trader Mike’s – as everything looks about the same as this one. Yup – I’m pretty sure these are made by Mike’s Mighty Good. Anyways, let’s have a look and give it a try!

Okay so I’ve never seen a noodle block like this ever before – except in Mike’s Mighty Good products. The six minutes steeping time makes this one a dead ringer for sure – it’s a private label.

The broth has a nice chicken flavor. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 081567702156.

Meet The Manufacturer: #2792: Mike’s Mighty Good Craft Ramen Spicy Pork Tonkotsu Flavor Ramen Soup

Meet The Manufacturer: #2792: Mike's Mighty Good Craft Ramen Spicy Pork Tonkotsu Flavor Ramen Soup

So today’s variety is one I’ve been curious about. This is a pork tonkotsu from the United States – something I don’t usually think is going to be great. But if it does as well as everything else has, I think it’s going to be good. Here’s a little about tonkotsu from Wikipedia-

Ramen soup is generally made from stock based on chicken or pork, combined with a variety of ingredients such as kombu (kelp), katsuobushi (skipjack tuna flakes), niboshi (dried baby sardines), beef bones, pig bones, shiitake, and onions.

  • Tonkotsu (豚骨, “pork bone”; not to be confused with tonkatsu) soup usually has a cloudy white colored broth. It is similar to the Chinese baitang (白湯) and has a thick broth made from boiling pork bones, fat, and collagen over high heat for many hours, which suffuses the broth with a hearty pork flavor and a creamy consistency that rivals milk, melted butter or gravy (depending on the shop).

Alright – let’s hit it up!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, chashu pork and shichimi togarashi. The noodles came out very well and had a nice chew. The broth made me think more spicy pork than spicy pork tonkotsu. Not saying it was bad, but I didn’t get the creaminess I was hoping for. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 081567702125.

So Mike’s Mighty Good Craft Ramen also comes in cups. Spicy beef sounds good. I’ve been a spicy fan for a long time. I just noticed on the pack reviewed yesterday it mentioned ‘insanely rich broth’ whereas today we have ‘rich broth.’ With a slightly mellower tone, let’s pop the lid and look within.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo organic mung bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, spring onion and shichimi togarashi. The noodles are just awesome. They seem to have a ever-so-slightly lighter tooth than the pack version. Seemed more comfort food like. The broth has a nice thickness to it which I honestly didn’t expect. Definitely a rich beefy kind of flavor and the spicy level was respectable. 4.0 out of 5. 0 stars. UPC bar code 081567702187.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Usually, the first instant product a noodle company will put out will be chicken flavor. In fact, the first instant noodle product that was ever produced was chicken flavor. Chicken is just about universally palatable, and most don’t have a religious rule against it. A chicken instant noodle is the beginning and so that’s where we will start today. Fried garlic chicken sounds really good, and on the package, it promises an ‘insanely rich broth.’ Alright – the proof is in the noodle – let’s give it a try!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, baked chicken, fried garlic, spring onion and hard boiled egg. Noodles are very good – nice backbone and chew to them and definitely have a ‘premium tooth.’ The broth was exactly as mentioned on the package. It has a strong chicken flavor and an easily distinguished fried garlic taste as well which was a nice start. It did seem, however, that the sesame oil in there was kind of jockeying for position a little bit. Either way, this was impressive for a start for this Meet The Manufacturer series. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 081567702118.

Viral Ramen News – 반반라면 – The ‘Half & Half Ramen Pot!’

The ultra-mega hip happening noodle pot of the future is here!

Actually, not exactly here – this hot new item is in Korea! The ‘Half and Half Noodle Pot’ ( 반반라면 ) is apparently all the buzz on Google. I read an article stating that it’s the most popular search right now – weird, eh? Maybe not – this is a pretty neat little invention!

From reading the Chosun article, the idea is that on one side you’d cook jjangmyeon and the other you’d cook a ramyun soup. Jjangmyeon is more a noodles with sauce on top affair as you can see in the photo. Here’s a link that has a video, although unless you can speak Korean, I’m not sure you’ll understand what’s being said.

I want one of these 반반라면  things! I only see one thing though; if the 반반라면  gets your noodles done, it’s going to be hard to dump the stuff out. Is there going to be a 반반라면  ladle or a 반반라면  serving spoon? I guess it wouldn’t need to be split though, would it? I dunno – looks like an interesting thing and hopefully they’ll be available to all those families that can’t decide which instant noodle to have for dinner!
