#2389: Gefen Noodle Soup Imitation Chicken Flavor - United States - kosher - instant noodles

I was at the store the other day and looking in the ethnic section. As it turns out, they’ve got a Kosher section and lo and behold, I find something I’ve not reviewed before. Indeed, there are a lot of Kosher instant noodles out there. So, what makes something Kosher? Here’s some info from wikipedia:

Kosher foods are those that conform to the regulations of kashrut (Jewish dietary law). Food that may be consumed according to halakha (Jewish law) is termed kosher (pronunciation: /kʃər/) in English, from the Ashkenazi pronunciation of the Hebrew term kashér (כָּשֵׁר‎, pronunciation: /kɑːʃɛər/), meaning “fit” (in this context, fit for consumption). Food that is not in accordance with Jewish law is called treif (Yiddish: טרײף‎, pronunciation: /trf/, derived from Hebrew: טְרֵפָה‎‎ trāfáh) meaning “torn.”

There are a lot of rules depending on how one follows the Jewish religion. So let’s check out this chicken flavor cup variety from Gefen.

Then open and stir – add more boiling water to fill line if necessary and cover for 2 more minutes.  Finally, stir and enjoy!

Looks like corn, carrot and onion.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added baby corn, baked chicken, spring onion and sweet onion. Indeed, the noodles come out perfectly. In fact this is no doubt due in part to the 2 minutes, stir, 2 minutes, stir cooking method. Lots of noodles and they have a nice gauge and soft chew. The broth is quite good too. Indeed, it does taste like chicken! Furthermore, it has a nice little black pepper bite to it that goes extremely well. finally, the included vegetable bits hydrated very well. Impressed with this one! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.  UPC bar code 710069061323.

So this is a documentary I watched in college for a class that was excellent. Indeed, Postville, Iowa is a melting pot, although it seems the ingredients in the pot don’t always seem to combine easily.

#475: Gefen Oriental Style Ramen Noodles Vegetable Flavor

Here’s another of the kosher noodles sent to me by Michael M. of Staten Island, NY. This one’s vegetable – kind of a strange flavor. Carrot? Celery? Zucchini? Acorn squash? What kind of vegetable? It has to be something tasty… Well, let’s check it out.

A green leafy vegetable flavor it looks to be according the the packet design. Although the chicken flavor has a packet with a blue chicken on it and chickens aren’t usually blue so my reasoning could be flawed…

Some yellow powdered seasoning.

Click image to enlarge. Added two fried eggs. So Here it is all done. The noodles are decent – about what you’d expect from a domestic pack of instant noodles. The broth is nice – salty and savory. I think this would be just about perfect for a sick day as a comfort food. I liked it – was what I expected. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. One thing to note – the vegetables are not what I expected. The ingredients list onion and shitake mushroom powder, but some of the other spices are awesome – cinnamon, star anise, fenugreek, red chili, cumin and coriander. A very nice collaboration of spices!

#469: Gefen Oriental Style Ramen Noodles Chicken Flavor

Here’s another one sent to me by Michael M. from Staten Island, NY – thanks again, man! As I mentioned before, he found a few of them on the kosher aisle of a grocery store and sent them my direction.  The last review I did was imitation chicken flavor. This one’s chicken flavor. I looked at the ingredients and don’t see any chicken… Hmm… Well, let’s try it out.

Hey this looks like the chicken packet in the other one! Well, I know that really doesn’t mean anything – I remember the Fortune brand Udon had packets that all looked exactly the same for all of their varieties.

Powdered soup base. Nothing surprising here.

Click image to enlarge. …and here we are with a couple of eggs boiled with the noodles. So this is pretty good – very relaxing flavor – good chicken taste. The noodles aren’t amazing but they’re what one would expect. Awesome! 3.5 out of 5.0 stars – pretty decent for what it claims to be; kosher Top Ramen.

An interview with a guy from Gefen foods at some sort of food convention.

You know, you really owe it to yourself to ride in this car.

#459: Gefen Oriental Style Ramen Noodles Imitation Chicken Flavor

So here’s one I got from Ramen Rater contributor Michael M. from Staten Island, NY. He said he found some of these down the aisle with kosher foods at his grocery store. Well,  let’s give it a try!

So one thing that I find interesting – he sent me some that were chicken flavor and some that were imitation chicken flavor. This just says chicken… Another case of ‘how the heck to they tell which is which in the factory?’

Pretty much your standard Top Ramen-esque packet of flavoring.

Click image to enlarge. Two cups of water and a couple of eggs that were cooked with the noodles. So not bad – the noodles were a slight bit better than I expected; slightly more backbone than cheap ramen. The broth was kind of watered down though and I think 1 3/4 cups of water might have combated that. Not bad, not something to write home about. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars.
