#5307: Indomie Mi Instan Rasa Rawon Pedas Mercon – Indonesia

Big thanks to Pher Engi for this one! A little research found some answers on this one – Wikipedia had this to say –

Rawon (Javanese: ꦫꦮꦺꦴꦤ꧀) is an Indonesian beef soup.[3] Originating from the Javanese cuisine of East Java, rawon utilizes the black keluak nut as the main seasoning, which gives a dark color and nutty flavor to the soup; thus rawon is often described as “black beef soup”.[1]

In 2024, TasteAtlas rated rawon as the world’s best soup. Also Indonesian soup, Soto Betawi followed in the second place.[4]

So this is a combo of rawon with mercon chili. Okay. Will it be black? Let’s find out!

Detail of the packaging (click to enlarge). Unsure if it is meat free – check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle to 400ml boiling water. Add in sachet contents. Finally, stir and enjoy!

Noodle got a little beat up.

Dry powder soup base of the left, chili powder on the right,

A crisp topping on the left, seasoned oil on the right.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added egg, crushed red pepper, sesame seed, and scallion. Noodle was a little thicker than their usual fare – kind of nice. The broth was definitely dark, beef flavored,  and spicy – kind of reminded me of Sichuan peppercorn. It was alright – not my favorite but fun to try. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars.
