This is the instant noodle that started my fascination with Malaysia. About five years ago I got some samples and was just floored. It hit 7th place back then on the top ten spicy list and was a really big deal. Then it hit #1 on the regular top ten list in 2014. The recipe has changed at least three times since it’s original release I think and this might be the fourth iteration of flavor for Penang White Curry from Mykuali. Let’s not delay – let’s give it a try!

Okay – the noodles are as grand as every – the combination of gauge and chew are just superb. The flavor in this recipe is what I loved about my first taste of this product in 2013. Here’s the last of the three new ‘Authentic Taste’ varieties from MyKuali that they sent a little while back. I was told that they’ve changed the way they cook the paste and that it will have enhanced shrimp flavor and aroma from the spices. Sounds good to me! Let’s check it out!

Nice chew and good quantity. The broth in this is so rich and deep it’s just insanity. The oil dances atop the liquid like a ballet of fiery colors, which also deliver fiery heat. As most of you should know, thishas been one of my all time favorites in the past couple years. When it came out, it was a real game-changer; so much so that over 20 different manufacturers started making their own white curry variants to compete. MyKuali has decided to standardize their packaging and now this is how the product looks. Let’s have a look inside and see if anything else has changed.

The noodles came out just as well as always – gorged on broth and with a good backbone. The broth is amazing – thick, deep and rich and amazing. #1623: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle (New Improved Taste)

MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle was the number one instant on the 2014 top ten list. So what do they do? They’ve changed it to make it better. This is pretty fascinating, but not at all surprising. What I heard again and again while visiting MyKuali in Penang last year was that the hawkers will change their recipes all the time; improving them and refining them. It looks as though that’s what MyKuali is doing here with their product line. Let’s see what’s different about their Penang White curry Noodle!

 Finished (click image to enlarge). Added broccoli, tau pok, shrimp and mung bean. The noodles seem a little more elastic and fuller this time – just a little more. The chew and mouthfeel are excellent. The broth is just amazing stuff again – definitely very spicy and strong garlic going on. The broth is darker as well. Top Ten 2014 Re-Review: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

Last June, I’d never heard of Penang, nor really had tried many varieties of Malaysian instant noodles for that matter. I had no clue what to expect and was absolutely elated with this one – my core interest in reviewing instant noodles is that I want to try new things every day. This was definitely something new to me. Let’s look inside the package and see why it’s on the 2014 top ten list!

Wow – such a strong and bright curry scent!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mint, prawn flavor fish balls, sweet onion, tofu puff and Chinese long bean. The noodles are excellent – perfect gauge and chew. Quantity was just right, too. The broth is a luxuriant escapade for the palate – a strong curry with ferocious heat. Definitely not thin either – it’s quite hearty. It’s so neat – I’ve reviewed so many different instant noodles and the industry never fails to come up with something new and revolutionary that makes the taste buds sing! So as I said at the end of the interview, this will be a ‘split’ Meet The Manufacturer. As soon as it’s ready, MyKuali will be sending their new Tom Yum noodle to review. But today, we have Penang white curry! So most people know about curry, but what about Penang? Wikipedia had this to say on their food:

Penang, long known as the food capital of Malaysia, is renowned for its good and varied food.[136][137][138][139] Penang was recognised as having the Best Street Food in Asia by Time magazine in 2004, citing that “nowhere else can such great tasting food be so cheap”.[140] Penang’s cuisine reflects the Chinese, Nyonya, Malay and Indian ethnic mix of Malaysia, but also shows some influence of Thailand. Its especially famous “hawker food”, many served al fresco, strongly features noodles, spices, and fresh seafood. The best places to savour Penang’s food include Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus, New Lane, New World Park, Penang Road and Chulia Street, as well as Raja Uda and Chai Leng Park over on the mainland. Penang is also famed for its traditional biscuits such as the tau sar pneah (bean paste biscuit). Aside from that, Penang is also ranked among top ten greatest street food cities in Asia, according to CNN Go.[141]

MyKuali is well known for their special pastes and so let’s see how this translates into the instant noodle world.

Finished – thanks to my Mom & Sister for getting me this new bowl on their trip to Canada (click image to enlarge)! Added shrimp, Vidalia sweet onion, green onion and broccoli. The noodles are a little wider than your typical instant and have a very nice chew to them and are top notch. The broth is amazing; deep curry flavor. Spicy too – really spicy! This broth is so rich and fill; it’s a curry lover’s dream. I’m very pleased with this one – 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 955655005197.
