#1711: Hao Way Vegetarian Penang Laksa

Laksa is usually a fish soup with lots of strong flavor to it. This is a vegetarian alternative! Sounds like something good to try today. The weather here is sooooo hot – usually doesn’t get into the 90’s in Washington state. Ugh! This sounded good for today so let’s check it out!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Vegetarian. To prepare, add noodles to 330ml boiling water. Cook for 3 minutes and add in paste sachet. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Has a kind of spicy and mushroom scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mung bean sprouts, white onion, red and orange bell pepper, coriander and tau pok. The noodles were a great gauge and had a very good texture. The broth had a good flavor – a little spicy and a rich taste to it. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.EAN bar code 9555730402002.

Penang as the World Heritage City: From Tourists’ Place Experience Perspectives – (from Amazon) – This book explores the dimensions of Cultural Traits and Heritage tourism in Penang. Penang is attractive to tourists because of its uniqueness, heritage and it is a cultural city with multi- racial ethnic population. Lack of knowledge and experience, combined with different interest may cause the tourism industry collapse. Cultural Traits and Heritage tourism is discussed as Penang’s opportunity to create tourism platform where resources and market would be kept and at the same time, competition with other World Heritage Cities will be created. Cultural Traits and Heritage recently has become an important topic and concept to tourism development especially in Penang since Penang was awarded as the World Heritage City by UNSECO in July 2008. Hence, in this research, it proposes the links of self representation to current desired outcomes of Penang’s distinctiveness and sustainability of Penang UNESCO award. At the same time, the model also tests how these outcomes influence the destination ability to meet tourists’ expectations and how Penang should act in competing in the global heritage tourism industry.

#1644: Hao Way Vegetarian Penang Laksa Instant Bowl Noodles

Here’s another bowl from Hao Way – this one a vegetarian laksa. Here’s a little about laksa from wikipedia:

Penang laksa (Malay: Laksa Pulau Pinang), also known as asam laksa from the Malay for tamarind, comes from the Malaysian island of Penang. It is made with mackerel (ikan kembung) soup and its main distinguishing feature is the asam or tamarind which gives the soup a sour taste. The fish is poached and then flaked. Other ingredients that give Penang laksa its distinctive flavour include lemongrass, galangal(lengkuas) and chilli. Typical garnishes include mint, pineapple slices, thinly sliced onion, hε-ko, a thick sweet prawn paste and use of torch ginger flower. This, and not ‘curry mee’ is the usual ‘laksa’ one gets in Penang.

Akright – let’s try this vegetarian laksa from Hao Way!

Here’s detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Vegetarian friendly. To prepare, add on contents of paste sachet and fill to line with boiling water. cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

An included fork!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Has a mushroom scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mung bean sprouts, broccoli and white onion. The noodles have a nice consistency – much different noodle from their pack versions – thicker and flat. The broth has a spicy and kind of acidic hit to it and an underlying mushroom flavor. I’m not real big on mushrooms and this aspect wasn’t really to my chagrin. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. Hao Way has made corresponding bowl version of their whole line of products. I reviewed the Laksa pack version a while back and now it’s time for the Laksa bowl! Let’s check it out!

An included fork!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Definitely can smell the fish component in the paste.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sliced squid, coriander, white onion, mung bean sprout and fish ball. The noodles are thick and flat and quite chewy. This is a real departure from their pack noodles. The broth is definitely full of grilled fish flavor, tartness and some spiciness as well. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555730401005.

#1608: Hao Way Penang Vegetarian Prawn Instant Noodles

Here’s another new one from Hao Way – Penang Vegetarian Prawn instant noodles! I’m really quite curious on how you can make a vegetarian prawn flavor. Let’s have a look!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Vegetarian. To prepare, add noodles to 330ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Stir in contents of sachet and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The paste sachet.

Has a kind of mushroom scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sweet onion, corn, tau pok and coriander. The noodles have a good chew and gauge that was pleasant to eat. The broth was interesting. I didn’t get a strong prawn style flavor, but I got a richness and slight sweetness that was mushroom based and a nice heat level as well. This was really a fascinating one as well as being one of the better vegetarian varieties I’ve had. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555730402033.

#1425: Hao Way Instant Penang White Curry Noodles

It was only a matter of time that I would get to try yet another Malaysian Penang white curry variety. There are quite a few out there now! Unfortunately, most of them are only available in Malaysia, so it’s tricky to get them. If I can get enough of them, I’d like to do a top ten of those! As far as I know, there are ten varieties, but now there could be more. Win Onn makes this Penang white curry  – and they really wanted me to try it! After the first try and the noodles being destroyed by the US Department of Agriculture for having a little chicken in them, they tried again with some documentation – and the USDA saw fit to let them through! Yay! Let’s have a look at this, the third Penang white curry variety I’ve gotten my hands on.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains chicken and shrimp. I should point out that the nutrition facts numbers look to be incorrect; there’s no way that the noodle block and everything has only 3 grams of fat and 117 calories. The last white curry also had incorrect values in the nutrition facts area. To prepare, add noodle block to 380ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Add sachet contents, stir, and enjoy!

The noodle block.

Dry seasoning powder.

Has an extremely strong shrimp scent.

A non-dairy creamer sachet.

A very light powder.

A paste sachet.

Has a very nice scent – spicy and shrimp.

Picked a little mint from my wife’s patio garden for this one!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sweet onion, mint from my wife’s garden, Chinese long bean, seafood flavored tofu, shrimp and fish ball. The noodles are great! Nice gauge and quality. They have a good chewiness and texture. The broth has an excellent tension to it and is very hearty. It has a decent punch of heat and a good curry flavor with strong shrimp flavor. Excellent! 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555730400008.

This place truly does look like a food paradise!
