#2615: Nissin Demae Ramen Straight Noodle Spicy Tonkotsu Flavor Instant Noodle - Hong Kong The Ramen Rater

Today it’s tonkotsu from Hong Kong. This is part of the series that’s expanded since being in the 2017 top ten list with their black garlic oil tonkotsu.  For those of you unfamiliar, here’s a little about tonkotsu ramen from Wikipedia –

Tonkotsu (豚骨, “pork bone”; not to be confused with tonkatsu) soup usually has a cloudy white colored broth. It is similar to the Chinese baitang (白湯) and has a thick broth made from boiling pork bones, fat, and collagen over high heat for many hours, which suffuses the broth with a hearty pork flavor and a creamy consistency that rivals milk, melted butter or gravy (depending on the shop).

So a creamy and spicy pork bone broth sounds very good to me. Let’s see how this one stacks up.

Here’s another one left over from the Nissin HK Meet The Manufacturer – they sent so many varieties! Thank you again! So, everyone knows what tonkotsu is, right? No? Here’s a snippet from Wikipedia:

Tonkotsu (豚骨, “pork bone”; not to be confused with tonkatsu) ramen usually has a cloudy white colored broth. Most shops, but not all, blend this pork broth with a small amount of chicken and vegetable stock and/or soy sauce. The noodles are thin and straight, and it is often served with beni shoga (pickled ginger). In recent years the latest trend in tonkotsu toppings is māyu (sesame oil), a blackish, aromatic oil made from either charred crushed garlic or Sesame seeds. It is a specialty of Kyushu, particularly Hakata-ku, Fukuoka (hence sometimes called “Hakata ramen“).

Yeah, definitely not to be confused with tonkatsu! Tonkatsu is breaded chicken. Let’s dig in!

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains chicken and pork. To prepare and everything except the liquid sachet. Fill to line with boiling water and cover 3 minutes. Add in liquid sachet contents. Stir and enjoy!

Smells spicy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, spring onion and Chinese sausage. The noodles hydrated nicely – big quantity too. I loved the broth in this one – nice scent and good spiciness. What’s more it was thicker than most of the ones in this series – something I really appreciated. The vegetables, eggs and other bits were extremely good. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 4897878120062.

I’m still not completely sure what exactly Yo Kai Watch is really, but my kid just bought a Nintendo 3DS game based on it. Here’s Yo Kai Watch with the Demae Ramen characters in a Nissin TV commercial.

Brand New Products From Nongshim America!

Here’s something I’ve been waiting for – three new products from Nongshim America! Let’s see what’s inside!

On the left we have Harmony. It’s a broth-free variety that has a chipotle pepper flavor to it. What’s neat is that you can sever is hot or cold – cold sounds good for the summer! On the right is their new Spicy tonkotsu – I don’t know a lot about it except it mentions pork in thje ingredients, so it’s a pork broth – sweet! What I find interesting is that on the edge of the packs it says “Nongshim Black Class Noodle Dish.”

Shrimp is good. Habanero spicy. Lime compliments both of those – very curious how this new bowl will be – been a while since they came out with a new Bowl Noodle! Thank go to Ray and Nikki and all the other great folks at Nongshim America for sending these samples!
