Meet The Manufacturer: #2000: Nissin Chikin Ramen Donburi

Well folks, here we are. Review #2000! I recommend that you all start by reading the interview I conducted with Nissin Japan before proceeding.

Finished (click to enlarge). The noodles hydrated perfectly and are the exact gauge and texture I remember having as a child. They’re salty and have a sesame chicken flavor. The egg block really expanded nicely – scrambled egg and spring onion are everywhere and in great quantity – no measly portion here. The broth is very tasty, again withe the sesame chicken taste. This was a bowl I’ve been wanting to try for many years and this is the perfect 2000th review. A taste of my childhood. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. JAN bar code 4902105002605.

New Varieties From Nissin Foods

A package from Scott A. over at Nissin Foods USA!

Scott recently traveled to Asia and brought some really neat varieties back for me! Notice that cup on the lower left? That’s a King Cup Noodle – it’s friggin’ huge! The trays on the right are a new line from Nissin Foods USA called Pan Asian Kitchen. Thanks!

#843: Nissin Top Ramen Short Cuts Beef Flavor Ramen Noodle Soup

Hey look at this! Something new the folks at Nissin Foods USA sent. I’ve never seen anything like this is the instant noodle world before; it’s kind of like instant potatoes meets instant noodles. You scoop out as much or as little of the noodles as you want (which have the flavoring already infused into them), and then add the mentioned water amount, and there you go! Let’s have a look under the hood of this new product.

Here’s the back and the sides of the box (click image to enlarge). They put a recipe on the back of each box. I really like the font they used on the left panel for Stove Top and Microwave – very 80’s – awesome!

This is it. No, not a seasoning packet! This is where the noodles are! four and a half cups of them.

Here’s what the noodles look like. I’ll tell you first off, they’re tasty uncooked – I need to stop picking at them or I’ll eat the whole box! They’re pre-seasoned as they said and also short.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some red bell pepper, broccoli, onion and roast beef. The noodles are the new ‘spoonable’ type that can be found in the Big Cup Noodles and the Spoon it products. They are more like the ones that come with the Big Cup Noodle in the way that they already are seasoned. They come out nice – in fact, they come out perfect here. More like short egg noodles. The broth is good too – has a good beef flavor. I would say that these are best ‘with something’ – ad some extras to make it a creation kind of thing. By themselves they are good though, and as I always rate noodles without their additions, I will do so again. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars – decent! #738: Nissin U.F.O. (Unidentified Flying Object) Yakisoba

This one is a donation from Courtnay N. of Surrey, BC! She brought some back from a trip to Japan! Thanks! So this looks really interesting – let’s give it a try!

Seaweed to put on top! Sweet!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a little of the veggie mix we made, a little beef lunch meat, a little kizami shoga (pickled ginger) and a pinch of Ajishima Kimchi furikake. The noodles are a bit mushy; a bummer. I expected them to be a little higher quality. The yakisoba sauce mixture has a wonderful taste – I like how it is liquid instead of a powdered addition. The veggies are nice and the meat re hydrated nicely! The powdered seaweed adds a nice extra taste to everything. Wish the noodles were a little better, but the flavors are really good – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 4902105022122 .

Yakisoban, to the rescue!

Yep – there’s a Super Nintendo game!

Okay so I’ve shown KPop and VPop, but here’s some Bubblegum JPop – Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. What I’ve noticed is that all three of these regional pop forms maintain intrusively catchy melodies that will eat your mind and spit it out on the sidewalk. My wife and I have listened to this album about a thousand times in the car already – she knows all the words and we have both developed sore necks and minds from the tunes.

#700: Meet The Manufacturer – Nissin Chikin Ramen (Local)

Here we go – this is the original instant noodle. This is what Momofuku Ando first sold in Japan! This is the real deal. Here’s a link to my post on Momofuku Ando Day!

My wife got me this five pack of Chikin Ramen for my birthday from Japan on eBay – unfortunately, the shipper wrapped it in newspaper and a plastic bag – the packs were all damaged in the extreme and only one had enough of the form to use for review.

See, this little dimple in the middle is what it;s all about. You’ll see what I mean.

This is the back of the big 5-pack bag (click image to enlarge). So what you do is put everything in a bowl, drop an uncooked egg on top, add 450cc water and cover for 3 minutes.

Here’s our poor specimen (this was the nicest one out of all five packs – all the others were mostly like the pulverized bits on the underneath of this one) there’s no seasoning packets – it’s all infused into the noodles.

I decided in honor of this ‘Meet The Manufacturer’ week and being review #700, I thought I’d make a video showing how I made this stuff.

The finished product (click image to enlarge). It seems like this would be about as hum-drum and normal as you can get, but quite honestly, there’s really nothing else that I’ve tried that’s like it. I’ve had some noodles that are pre-seasoned and tasted somewhat similar, but they don’t come out like this. The noodles have a very light, almost ‘springy’ texture to them. They bulk up when steeping and you end up with a pretty decent portion. The broth is thin; like I said, all the seasoning is in the noodles themselves. The flavor is kind of like a chicken sesame. I think calling them ‘Roasted Ramen’ when they were available in the US for a short time was an apt title. These are a work of art and a testament to Momofuku Ando‘s ingenuity. With the egg, it’s a good, filling meal. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars!!! UPC barcode 4902105001103 .
