So here’s what the folks at Japan Crate had to say about this variety -“Enjoy the two worlds of hot and sour with tom yum this season. With notes of pakuchi (coriander) and lemongrass, this Japanese take on Thai fried noodles will leave your stomach full and taste buds satisfied.”

Alright – so they recommend bacon with this. I’m going to take the leap and go with chashu. Let’s give it a try!

The vermicelli.

A wet sachet.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added scallions, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts, black sesame seeds and habanero togarashi. The vermicelli came out pretty well – very thin and a nice chew. I liked also the fact that they were in semi-short lengths, making them easier to manage with a fork from the outset. The flavor was definitely a Japanese take on a Thai tom yum as it definitely was different. A lot of sweetness here and some lemongrass. It just didn’t rub me the right way. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4902388014890.

#2822: Nagatanien Chanko Shio Ramen

#2822: Nagatanien Chanko Shio Ramen

Found this at Yaohan Centre’s Osaka Market up in Richmond, BC Canada a few months ago. Sometimes they have a section featuring fancy import instant noodles and this was with that. I’m not really sure about this one as far as the title goes, but it’s shio – that I’m pretty sure of. But the bowl it’s being served in in the image makes me think it may be nabeyaki or some other kind. Either way, I’m fascinated. From the TV spot below, I’m thinking this is a special endorsement from this sumo wrestler, however I’ve no information about who he is. He certainly looks happy to be on the box! Let’s give this one a try.

A rich liquid.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion, narutomaki, Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts and shichimi togarashi. The noodles are awesome – great chew and mouthfeel – very yellow noodle with a lighter gauge. The broth is very strong and rich even with the 700ml water called for. Definitely a winner. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.  JAN bar code 4902388014593.

#2226: Nagatanien Hiyashi Soba Taidashi Goma

Found this one recently at a local Japanese supermarket (Uwajimaya). Really wasn’t sure what the heck it was but it was with the instant noodles so I picked it up. Well, this is a cold dipping noodle – should be interesting. Let’s give it a look!

The distributor’s sticker (click to enlarge).

Here’s the back of the package (click to enlarge). Contains fish. To prepare, boil noodles for 3 minutes. While boiling them, combine liquid sachet contents with 50ml cold water and stir. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water. Drain well. Enjoy!

The noodles in their own pouch.

The liquid sachet.

The liquid that is mixed with 50ml cold water.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added chashu pork belly, spring onion and shichimi togarashi. The noodles are great – nice round shape and light gauge. They have a decent chew as well. The flavor was a bit of a turnoff as it had a kind of miso and soy and plum hit which rubbed me the wrong way. 2.75 out of 5.0 stars. JAN bar code 4902388053165.
