Spicy stuff! So this one is the latest of the standard pillow pack varieties of the ‘fire noodle’ series. For those of you who don’t know what topokki is, here’s a little something from Wikipedia –

Tteok-bokki (떡볶이) or stir-fried rice cakes is a popular Korean food made from small-sized garae-tteok (long, white, cylinder-shaped rice cakes) called tteokmyeon (떡면; “rice cake noodles”) or commonly tteok-bokki-tteok(떡볶이 떡; “tteok-bokki rice cakes”).[1][2] Fish cakes, boiled eggs, and scallions are some of the most commonly added ingredients. It can be seasoned with either spicy gochujang (chili paste) or non-spicy ganjang (soy sauce)-based sauce; the former being the prototype,[3] and the latter often called gungjung-tteok-bokki (royal court tteok-bokki). Today, variations also include currytteok-bokkicream saucetteok-bokkijajang-tteok-bokkiseafoodtteok-bokkigalbi-tteok-bokki and so on. Tteok-bokki is commonly purchased and eaten at bunsikjip (snack bars) as well as pojangmacha (street stalls).

Ingredients such as seafoodshort ribsinstant noodleschewy noodles are also added to the dish.

Haemultteok-bokki, (해물떡볶이; “seafood tteok-bokki“) uses seafood as a sub ingredient.

Galbi-tteok-bokki (갈비떡볶이; “short ribs tteok-bokki“) is a tteok-bokki uses short ribs as an ingredient.

Ra-bokki (라볶이; “instant noodles tteok-bokki“) and jjol-bokki (쫄볶이; “chewy noodles tteok-bokki“), are quite similar. They both add noodles to tteok-bokki. ra-bokki and jjol-bokki differs from the kind of noodles added to tteok-bokki. ra-bokki adds ramyeon noodle, and jjol-bokki adds chewy noodles which are used to make jjol-myeon.

I would say that topokki is one of the tastiest things I’ve had – whether a spicy one or cream cheese topokki – oh man that’s good too. Anyways, let’s check out this newest variety!

This one came by way of eBay seller 1theKorea – they’ve got all sorts of neat South Korean varieties, and lots of the spicy ones that aren’t the easiest to find or are unavailable in the USA. This is the variety that set off the Fire Noodle Challenge. In reality, Buldak Bokkeummyun is spicy fried chicken flavor. In South Korea as well as many places in Asia, fried chicken is extremely popular. Korean fried chicken is great; double coated and comes in violently spicy, regular and honey garlic to name a few.

To be honest, South Korean bar food is amazing. Tteokbokki are fat tubes of chew ricecake often served with a spicy sweet sauce, egg, Busan fishcake and kamaboko. That’s one of our favorites. We used to go to a great place nearby which had such things on the menu, but unfortunately they switched owners and it went to crap. I hope someday I’ll get to visit South Korea – everything I’ve heard about the place is wonderful – and get to sample some of the foods there, especially pojangmacha – street vendor fare.

But back to the noodles. These have cause many a man to weep and have a tantrum over their mouths being on fire. ! There’s a new limited edition 2x spicy now, and I do have it! I wanted to review this one again though in it’s new packaging. Let’s make Buldak Bokkeummyun!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion and Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts. The noodles are fat and plump with a great chew. The flavor is extreme. It’s hot and super spicy. Moreover, the heat lingers on for a long time. Still, it does have flavor to it – if you peel back the layers of tongue that are burned off, it’s pretty tasty actually! A kind of sweet and salty hit at the beginning I like a lot. But yeah – if you’re not up for any kind of spicy or think Tabasco sauce is hot stuff, this isn’t for you. 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.
