Top-Ten Re-Review: Sapporo Ichiban Japanese Style Noodles Chow Mein

Aha -= this is one of my favorite! Number four on the Top Ten Instant Noodles of All Time as reviewed by The Ramen Rater. Thanks go to Greg B. of Marathon, Florida for sending a pack my way!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). As you can see by the directions if you cock your head to the right, these noodles are made a little different. You add the noodles to a mere cup of boiling water. Cook them until they suck up all the water, then add the seasoning packet and stir.

First, here’s the noodles. Fried and tasty!

This is the packet whose content get stirred in once the noodles have cooked.

Gotta love that font! Green Laver is in here. This stuff gets sprinkled on top of everything once it’s done. Serious goodness.

The finished product (click image to enlarge). This is the finest of the fine I tell ya! The noodles are good. They’re chewy but not funky. The flavor is sweet and has a slight spiciness to it – not as heat of peppers kind of spice either. Its a lot like yakisoba sauce. The seaweed on top adds just a little bit of extra flavor and adds a nice finish and a colorful oddness. This is great stuff and I truly cannot advise you enough to try it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. 1. Tried this just now and it is pretty good. I did it sorta backwards as I added the seasoning into the noodles and water as I was cooking to get uniform covering. I think that made it a little more mellow in flavoring so I will have to try it next time as the instructions say. It is VERY good as stated.

  2. I just moved to Florida. I am from Hawaii and I eat this at least once a week. I cant find it anywhere here I know I can order it online at Amazon, but does anyone know any stores in Florida (tampa) that carry this? I want one tomorrow! Oh and btw, its way better than any other instant yakisoba out there. Especially good with a dash of sesame oil and some left over meat. Beef, Chicken, whatever just cut it up and toss it in right before they r done to heat through. SO amazing. Now Im hungry

  3. Just FYI, this is an instant yakisoba. It says “yakisoba” in the Japanese text but not sure why it was translated into “chow mein”

    1. It came as part of a pack that was mailed to me and the USPS were the people who broke it into the four chunks. I believe the only time that I’ve ever seen packaging mentioning breaking up a block of instant noodles would be the back of Maruchan Ramen Noodle Soup packs. Myself, I never break apart noodle blocks. Sometimes you’ll find instant noodles that say things like ‘Artificial Pork Flavor Instant Noodle’ – it’s not a typo; at one point, it was literally one single noodle. Then they break them into smaller pieces in the factory.

  4. One of my favs also. After the noodles have absorbed all of the water I add a little sesame oil and some chopped shallots, and stir them around in the skillet on medium heat for a couple minutes. Ends up more like a lo-mein dish.
