#85: Nissin Demae Ramen Noodle With Sesame Oil

I last tried this variety when I was about 15 years old I think and I absolutely hated it. I have been avoiding it like the plague ever since. I suppose 20 years later, its time for another go.

There has been mention of HK (Hong Kong) and Japanese versions of Demae Ramen. I’m going to go with the premise here that this would be the latter. Here you see the packet of sesame oil.

The soup base packet. I’m sure it says that this is soup base, but I’m rather curious what else it might say…

A very different graphic design than any of the other Demae Ramen varieties I’ve tried recently.

Here we go – powder and sesame oil hanging out in the bowl before I add the angry noodle and boiling water!

So here we are (click image to enlarge).  Apparently I was of little intestinal fortitude twenty years before. It’s not that bad. It’s a little much on the sesame oil side. There’s so much grease here and so much salt. You read for 20g of fat and 2110mg of sodium? Yeah, this is pretty rough stuff. Its not too bad not hmm I dunno. Altogether I weigh this one in at 1.75 out of 5 stars. Just a little too much of everything and not enough fun. Get it here.

  1. i ate it since i was small. my favorite! it’s so good. but i never put the sesame oil, it’s disgusting :S you shouldn’t have put the sesame oil. plus i never drink the soup. too much flavour going on. i’m going to buy it tomorrow, i’m craving for this 🙂

    1. I’ve tried the Tonkotsu pork (boring flavor), the Shoyu (with the seaweed it tastes like raw fish, boring without it), the Miso (not bad), and this one, which is probably the “original” flavor. This is my favorite, no question, with or without the sesame oil, I love it. I think the trick to flavorful noodles (for any brand ramen) is to throw the seasoning packet in at the beginning of the boil. Any oil packets I add at the end of the boil, so as not to coat the noodles and prevent them from absorbing the flavor of the seasoning.

      1. this flavor is FLAT OUT DISGUSTING!!!!!!! nowhere on its lying label does it mention the vile rotten fish tasting flavor packet!!!! i’ve bought this fish puke TWICE because seafood is mentioned nowhere on the label and i read labels carefully specifically to AVOID pork and especially seafood flavors. fortunately, tonight i recognized those evil little red spiral “fish cakes” and putrid seaweed flakes and avoided a second inedible waste of money. the false label on this flavor infuriates me. i hate seafood!

Wow it’s funny – when I tried this way back I felt the same way. I’ve had it since then (the Hong Kong version, the Singapore version and the Japanese version) and I like them as the sesame oil really works well. I used to also think seafood was funky too, but now I wish everything was seafood. One think to note I would say is that pork and seafood are definitely prevalent in Japanese instant noodle varieties. The little swirly things are called narutomaki.

  2. I had for the first time the other day. It wasn’t the worst thing I have tasted But it didn’t floor me either.
