#749: Top Ten: Sapporo Ichiban Chow Mein (New Version)

We were at 99 Ranch Market yesterday and I noticed that Sapporo Ichiban Chow Mein has a new packaging. Wondering if it’s got a different flavor as well.

Okay so if you look at the serving size and everything from here and compare it to the old one here, there are definite difference in amount of fat, sodium and other things. Hmm. Click image to enlarge.

The noodle block – tight and kind of weighty – tasty raw too I might add!

Here’s the main seasoning packet.

Tasty stuff here!

Yeah! Green Laver is one of my all-time favorite seasoning additions!

Sprinkle it on at the very end and enjoy! It’s powdered seaweed.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a little beef lunch meat and some kizami shoga (pickled ginger). Well, The only difference I could detect was … Well, nothing really. This is incredibly nummy stuff! It didn’t seem to want to suck up all the liquid as fast as the old one, but after adding the main seasoning packet and giving it a stir and returning it to the stove for a minute or so it was all but absorbed. There’s a reason this is in the top ten list – it’s good – really good. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – one of my all-time favorites! UPC bar code 076186000189.

Top-Ten Re-Review: Sapporo Ichiban Japanese Style Noodles Chow Mein

Aha -= this is one of my favorite! Number four on the Top Ten Instant Noodles of All Time as reviewed by The Ramen Rater. Thanks go to Greg B. of Marathon, Florida for sending a pack my way!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). As you can see by the directions if you cock your head to the right, these noodles are made a little different. You add the noodles to a mere cup of boiling water. Cook them until they suck up all the water, then add the seasoning packet and stir.

First, here’s the noodles. Fried and tasty!

This is the packet whose content get stirred in once the noodles have cooked.

Gotta love that font! Green Laver is in here. This stuff gets sprinkled on top of everything once it’s done. Serious goodness.

The finished product (click image to enlarge). This is the finest of the fine I tell ya! The noodles are good. They’re chewy but not funky. The flavor is sweet and has a slight spiciness to it – not as heat of peppers kind of spice either. Its a lot like yakisoba sauce. The seaweed on top adds just a little bit of extra flavor and adds a nice finish and a colorful oddness. This is great stuff and I truly cannot advise you enough to try it. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. Geez this is old – feels like forever ago…
