The Ramen Rater Top Ten Noodle Bowls Of All Time 2013 Edition

After more than a year of pondering and reviewing since the last list, here’s the new top ten instant noodle bowls. This encompasses all instant noodle bowls reviewed up to today, June 15th, 2013. With no further adieu, the top ten instant noodle bowls of all time, 2013 edition.

10 – JFC Japanese Style Noodle Soup Curry Flavour – South Korea

Fresh udon noodles and a curry sauce that’s thick and luxuriant. If you’re in need of a curry fix, look no further! Every time I see it on a store shelf, I get this kind of warm, fuzzy feeling. Original review here

9 – Ottogi Spaghetti Ramen – South Korea

A fun bowl of noodles with thick South Korean ramyun noodles, a sweet powder and a sweet and slightly spicy spaghetti sauce. A nice twist on a classic. Original review here

8 – Little Cook Spicy Beef Flavor – Thailand

This one features firm noodles, a spicy broth with beef and curry notes and fake meat that’s surprisingly good. Myriad of different components collide together in an irresistible way. Original review here

7 – Nongshim Chapagetti Roasted Chajang Noodle – United States

Although originating in South Korea, Nongshim now makes these in Southern California. Chajang is a traditional Chinese black bean sauce that is wonderful with noodles and the nice part with this particular variety is that it’s the first I’ve seen in a bowl. What’s more, it’s easy to make and has excellent hearty flavor as well as great noodles. Original review here

6 – Paldo Kokomen Spicy Chicken Flavor King Cup – South Korea

Kokomen is a South Korean ramyun with a light or white broth. It’s got a chicken and jalapeno kind of flavor that’s really quite excellent. The translation from pack to bowl is exemplary, losing none of the quality. Original review here

5 – Little Cook Mushroom Vegetarian Premium Noodle – Thailand

A combination of a great quality noodle and nice broth is one thing, but they add a retort pouch with really nice vegetables that make this seem more gourmet. I’ve never been a big fan of mushrooms, but these are really quite good. Original review here

4 – Yamamoto Ponpoko Tempura Udon Fried Noodles Bowl – Japan

Thick, slightly chewy noodles and a broth with strong soy flavor. The tempura gives a satisfying crunch. Check out the original review as well to see why this one’s got a great name. Original review here

3 – Maruchan Midori No Tanuki Instant Soba Bowl – Japan

The only one from last year’s list to remain. Although it slipped out of first place, this is a seriously excellent bowl of noodles. The buckwheat noodles have a delicate crumble that works so well here and the broth is nice and rich. The disk of tempura is a real treat. Original review here

2 – FoodMon DJ-DOC Instant Ramen Rice Toppokki – South Korea

Topokki are like really thick chewy short noodles. They’re usually served with a spicy red sauce; here they join instant noodles along with the spicy sauce to make a succulent kind of Soiuth Korean lasagna-esque feast. Original review here

1 – Nissin Raoh Rich Soy Sauce Flavor – Japan

All I can say is that this stuff is epic. The noodles are extremely good and of very high quality. The broth is as rich as the name purports as well. What’s more, it comes with a slice of roast pork which hydrates well and has a very good texture and flavor. This is where it’s at! Original review here

The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time

A couple of days ago, I received an email from a man who was angry. He was angry that the instant noodles he bought said that they were spicy Chicken flavor but weren’t spicy whatsoever and that I needed to change the seasonings ASAP. Every once in a while, I get a comment or email from someone who thinks that I make instant noodles or am affiliated with an instant noodle company. I decided to reply and do a review of the product he had problems with, adding some hot spices, sauces and peppers from around the world to really heat it up. It then occurred to me that a lot of people really like spicy instant noodles and that there’s really no list of the hottest ones out there. I figured I’d better do something about that, and so here’s the Top Ten Spiciest Instant Noodles Of All Time!


#10: Koka Instant Non-Fried Noodles Spicy Black Pepper Flavour – Singapore
If you like black pepper, you’ll want to try this. It has a nice peppery sauce that has a rich and deep black pepper flavor that doesn’t quit. The garnish of dried veggies are an added bonus. Original review


#9: Wei Lih Good Good Eat Super Ramen Hot Chili Flavor – Taiwan
Has decent noodles and a deep red broth that exclaims ‘beware of fire!’ The broth also has an oily texture and sweet notes that make it quite unique in its fire. Original review


#8: Paldo (Korea Yakult) Kko Kko Myun – South Korea
The result of a comedian on a competition TV show in South Korea, Kko Kko Myun has been a huge craze. The flavor is a jalapeno chicken – and the jalapeno is nice and strong. Has a real good bite to it. Original review


#7: FoodMon DJ-DOC Jjolmyeon – South Korea
DJ-Doc is a hip-hop group in South Korea and they must be pretty happy to have their faces on this stuff. In this bowl, you have noodles, large pieces which are rice cake and a red sauce which has a wonderful heat and flavor. It all ties together to be like a hot and spicy lasagna ala South Korea. Wonderful stuff! Original review


#6: JML Instant Noodle Artificial Spicy Hot Beef Flavour – China
A very spicy Chinese noodle soup. Notice its not spicy beef, it’s spicy hot beef! Has decent veggies and a serious punch! Original review


#5: Nongshim Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup – USA
Yep – they make this is the USA now. A standard of the spicy noodle world! Hot and tasty with lots of thick noodles. Original review


#4: Namchow Mee Jang Noodle Soup Sour Spicy Chicken (Tom Yum) – Thailand
The packaging looks pretty tame but this stuff is anything but. The broth is enough to blow your head off – wow! Original review


#3: Nongshim Jinjja Jinjja (Really Really) Ramyun – South Korea
This is hot and unique. Based on pork broth and has some niceties like black sesame seeds and peanut powder. Has a strong heat but it’s got some really great taste to it – this is awesome stuff! Original review


#2: Indomie Curly Noodle With Chicken & Chilli Paddi – Indonesia
Sweet mother – this is intense! That little pepper (also known as a Bird’s Eye pepper) was enough to burn my lips, mouth and gut for a good long time! Heavy duty! I should also mention there’s a place that sells spicy noodles in Jakarta that has 75 to 100 of these peppers mixed in – Imagination fails me as to the scorching pain! Original review


#1: Paldo Teumsae Instant Noodles With Soup – South Korea
Hands down, bar non, this is the hottest stuff I’ve had. In over 800 varieties I’ve tried, this is the very hottest. From the first slurp to the end of the bowl, my mouth was on fire. If you are a big fan of all that is spicy, this is what you are looking for. Original review

#566: Food Mon DJ-DOC Jjolmyeon

This is another from the DJ-DOC line. DJ-DOC is a kind of boy band/dance trio from Korea from what I see on Youtube. The last one of these I had was pretty spicy and like a lasagna! Curious how this one’ll be! This one has ‘jjolmyeon – what’s that you say? Here’s a little wisdon from the Wikipedia:

Jjolmyeon is one of the most popular noodle dishes in South Korea, especially among young people at bunsikjeom (Korean snack restaurant).[3] It is a representative dish of Incheon, where jjolmeyon originated in the early 1970s by a mistake made while making naengmyeon. Noodles larger than regular naengmyeon noodles were made at a factory and instead of being thrown out, were given away to a nearby bunsikjeom. The owner mixed the noodles with gochujang sauce and jjolmyeon was born.

That’s one big packet of red sauce and the green one’s full of veggies.

I’m going with these being the jjolmyeon noodles.

These are the ttebokki in all their glory! Just so you know, I didn’t consider the do not eat packet (desiccant) as a seasoning packet.

Here’s everything ready for a spin in the microwave. So here’s what I did: I put the jjolmyeon in the bowl and added 150cc of boiling water and let it sit for a couple minutes. Then I put everything else in there as you see in the above image. Then I stirred and microwaved for 3.5 minutes.

I wonder if 3.5 minutes is a little much for this bowl? Anyways, it’s some good stuff! The ttebokki is nice and chewy and the noodles are as well and the sauce and veggies – wow like an Asian lasagna with a bit of pure fire added in! Excellent! Another 5.0 out of 5.0 for the Food Mon DJ-DOC line!

Kinda neat video by DJ-DOC. The sample is actually from a song called “Street Life” that was originally recorded by The Crusaders and featured prominently in one of my favorite movies of all time, “Jackie Brown.”

Another in the series of Thanksgiving home movies people have put on Youtube I’ve found. This one had a slightly creepy red tinge to it I liked.

#490: FoodMon DJ-DOC Instant Ramen Rice Toppokki

First things first. My wife pointed this out at a Korean supermarket here in town and I was like ‘what the heck is this?’ So we got it and I’ve had some issues with it. First, I had a lot of problems finding out how to cook it. Also, what was it called??? As you can see, there’s one of those funky square bar codes on top of the container here. I went and scanned it with my Android phone and sent it to the Google translate. Click here to see what it comes up with…

I have no idea what this is – it was a little tag that was bumping around under the plastic wrap. The little thing on the fork is called Ttebokki or maybe Toppokki – I’m really not sure at this point.

This is a pretty big packet of hot, sweet paste. Smells really good!

Then, the Ttebokki or Toppokki (if you know what it is, please let me know!). Never seen anything like this in a bowl noodle kind of thing. But this isn’t your regular old bowl of noodles…

So after looking at this and trying to find English instructions, I decided go cook it this way: put the noodle round into the bottom. Add 150cc water. Put the toppokki on top of that, then all the sauce and the veggies, then put the plastic lid on and microwave for 3.5 minutes.

Click image to enlarge. The finished product.  At some point the lid popped off! I stirred everything together and tried it. It reminds me of a spicy lasagna in a way. I liked how the big noodle things interacted with the regular ramen noodles. The sauce was excellent!! Everything worked well and it was fascinating. I highly recommend it! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – a lot of awesomeness!
