#2072: Maruchan Bowl Taste Of Asia Beef Flavor Sukiyaki Ramen

Hey look at this! So every two weeks, my wife and I bring my son Andy down to Renton, Washington to go to Pokemon League. Yeah – there’s such a thing! Kids (and some adults) play the Pokemon card game. Well, my wife and I don’t play Pokemon so we have time to look around and stroll. As it happens, there’s a Uwajimaya nearby which is awesome. The first time we went I found two big bagfulls of noodles! What was a surprise was finding a LOT of Maruchan products I’d not seen before. There are a couple new Instant Lunch cups (sriracha which I reviewed previously as well as a cihpotle chicken) and these Taste of Asia products in the Bowl line. Let’s check out this sukiyaki variety!

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains beef and chicken. To prepare, add in contents of sachet #1 (solid ingredients) and room temperature water to fill line. Microwave (1000W) for 3 minutes uncovered. If you have a microwave with different wattages, use this tool.Let sit in the microwave an additional minute. Add in contents of sachet #2. Stir and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The first sachet.

Looks like vegetables and textured vegetable protein.

The powder soup base sachet.

A large amount of light powder.

Finished (click to enlarge). Added spring onion and Salad Cosmo mung bean sprouts. The noodles are good – and very plentiful. They’re soft and flat. The broth is really nice – it’s got a kind of sweet beef taste to it and a decent oiliness. The included veggies and TVP hydrate perfectly – not only that, the quantity is very good. I like how there’s tons of cabbage as well as decent sized pieces of TVP beef going on! Excellent! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 041789003530.

  1. Tried it today. Not bad, but the sweetness wasn’t my thing. It reminded me of a ramen cup (whose name I can’t remember) from Costco that I had a couple years ago with a similar sweetness and amount of cabbage. Does anyone have an idea what that might have been? I was ambivalent about its sweetness too; luckily, I soon thereafter discovered the delicious Nongshim Shin Black, which (along with this website) opened my eyes to the potential of instant ramen.

      1. You mean the first cup I referred to, with the cabbage and sweet taste, or the second one, the Shin Black Cup? I’m certain the first wasn’t any sort of Shin Black, and the second wasn’t onion flavored, but the current Shin Black flavor.

I just remembered something else about the first cup I mentioned, with the sweet flavor and the cabbage — I think the noodles were thick and relatively short. It kills me that I can’t remember what this was.

        1. Ah I see… Well here’s the original Shin Black Cup – https://www.theramenrater.com/2012/05/31/751-meet-the-manufacturer-nongshim-shin-ramyun-black-premium-onion-flavor-cup/
Honestly, I thought this was a real winner and for some reason I guess people didn’t like it because it wasn’t in existence for very long. Nongshim sent it to me and asked me not to review it until a certain point which I did – I think it may have been a prototype, but it was definitely mass produced for a shoirt time.

  2. It does contain beef extract and chicken broth, so not totally meat-free. I picked this up today, looking forward to trying it.
