Re-Review: MAMA Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Went to 99 Ranch Market yesterday and picked these up. I reviewed them way back – #136 – over two years ago. I gave them 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. Many of your have commented on how much you enjoy it and so I think I’ll give it another chance. I’ve found varieties from back then are more to my liking now.

The back of the package (click image to enlarge). These noodles like to be steeped.

The noodle block. Tight and this – and tasty by themselves!

The dry seasonings – soup base and chili powder.

Here’s the chili powder atop the soup base powder.

The liquid soup paste packet.

Strong citrus smell (of course).

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a fried egg with Krazy Mixed Up Salt, onions, Kizami Shoga (pickled ginger and extra lean ham on top. The noodles are nice – crumbly but good crumbly. I like how many of them there are too. The broth is excellent – a strong, crisp and sharp citrus ‘bite’ then leads to a fiery flavor. It’s definitely Tom Yum! I don’t detect a strong shrimp taste, but a more subtle one. Someone mentioned that the ‘creamy’ part in the name has to do with boiling whole shrimp – which makes a kind of creamy looking addition to the broth. Well, I don’t know what I was thinking when I had this the first time, but those of you who like this stuff, rejoice! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars – this stuff is so tasty! UPC bar code 052066001378.

  1. This ramen is the reason I found this website, I googled the brand because it was so good. I bought it on a whim at a local Korean market last year and had low expectations since it was only $.69 per pack. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was! It seems to have almost a perfect balance of savory, salty, sour and spicy flavors for me and I like that the shrimp flavor isn’t too strong. I can eat these on their own, but my favorite is with a good squeeze of lime juice, green onion, poached egg, diced tomato, and a couple of sauteed shrimp. Really excellent soup.

  2. Love it! I need to step up my game a bit, but I really enjoyed these made without any embellishments. I think these will be a new go-to.

    Thank you Ramen Rater!

  3. […] I had tried this ages back and wasn’t very fond of it. At the request of readers, I gave it another try and found it to be the best Thai variety I’ve had thus far. The strong bite of the heat and the crisp citrus flavors are of authentic Tom Yum. The noodles are thin and almost crumble when chewed – the texture is different from any others on the list. The creaminess is not of dairy but a cream-like color from boiling shrimp. Full review […]

  4. This is the best Ramen I have had so far. Hands down. I buy it by the case on Amazon. What is your ranking for it RR? I add a fried egg bacon bits a little more fresh lime juice and green onion. I’m thinking a couple pieces of frozen shrimp take it to the next level.

      1. I know this is quite awhile back, but I too enjoy ginger in tom yum! This noodle is amazing. I am an Asian who doesn’t like much Ramen (imagine that) lol. This is one of the few that I absolutely love. I also find it strange that people think ginger in Tom Yum noodles is wrong when the recipe of Tom Yum itself has ginger in it lol in fact most Thai soup dishes do.
