#197: Rhee Bros Assi Brand Rice Noodle w/Hot & Spicy Flavored Soup

Rhee Bros? Assi? Hmm here’s what I found

The word ASSI comes from the traditional Korean title for a young married woman. ASSI brand symbolizes the Korean gril’s wedding costume, and was first introduced in 1976 and has grown into as our flagship brand. ASSI has been recognized as the standard for Korean food products.

So there you go. There you go.

Soup base and a package of noodles.

  1. I tried this today. At first glance, the biggest differences are the new package design (it’s also now “portrait” instead of “landscape”) and the noodles — they are straight, very thin and long, looped in a nice little pillow inside, no plastic bag. On further inspection, the new version is a tenth of an ounce lighter, and the soup base ingredients are slightly different — they’re in a different order, and include black and red pepper powder. The noodles now include “starch” instead of “sweet potato starch,” though they may have just decided to be more concise. Steeping time is 3-4 minutes instead of 5 minutes. Anyway, I was hoping this had improved from when you last reviewed it.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with your review. The noodles were chewy and rubbery, which wasn’t terrible but not great either. The became easier to chew as they continued to soak up the broth (these were THIRSTY), but the consistency then became a little slimy and unappealing. The broth was generic spicy but OK. The veggie bits were decent. All in all, I’d say your original rating is still accurate.
